  1. And Iommi cant touch Keith Richards for overall riff writing. Cant touch him. And Page makes him look silly.

As a fan of all three bands, I respectfully disagree.

Just listen to this song, there are five great guitar riffs. The first two minutes of the song sounds nothing like the last two minutes of the song . . . and they aren't even the best riffs of the album (I'd give that honor to the riffs from Sabbra Cadabra and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath).

  2. Well, I haven't had any cake today, so I'll take that, thank you!

With you on Keef. Never was so little stretched so far. But I think Silvermedalist prefers his music lightweight. He worships The Eagles and Jethro Tull, you know.

As for Iommi, I'd be surprised if he wrote ALL the Sabs' riffs.

Yeah. Geezer definitely came up with some of Sabbath's riffs, and he also wrote most of their pre-Dio lyrics. Iommi wrote most of the riffs though. And Iommi is still writing great riffs.

Edit: I found a quote from Geezer that leads me to believe Tony was doing most of the heavy lifting as far as the riffs go.

"Geezer: When we first used to write, it used to be all together. That's the way it was done. Tony would come out with a riff, then I would put the bass in and Bill Ward would drum along."

  3. Symptom of the Universe

    Sweet Leaf

    Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

    Into the Void

    Electric Funeral

    Supernaut

    Black Sabbath

Come on then, what's the prize?

For anyone interested in Sab covers, I can recommend 'Masters of Misery: An Earache Tribute'. Brutal Truth's cover of 'Lord of This World' is, well, brutal. And Fudge Tunnel's version of 'Changes' has to be heard to be believed.

There's also a great version of Frank Zappa's favourite Sabs tune, 'Supernaut', by 1000 Homo DJs (aka Ministry).

    Here you go. :D

Or if that's not your flavor, you can have this.

Come on now. I like Sabbath. But better than Richards or Page? Come one now.

I said Iommi is better at writing riffs, and I don't even think it's close. If Page wrote every Zeppelin riff, I would have them tied at #1, but as far as I know, JPJ wrote a lot of Zeppelin's riffs, especially the ones that are notes instead of chords. If we're talking about solos or overall, I'd take Page over Iommi. I don't think Richards even belongs in the discussion.

  4. My sons went to an Iron Maiden concert in July.

They said it was a great show as well as great music.

They also were impressed with Bruce's vocals.

They rank him in their top five best rock singers.

They report that the newest Maiden album is fantastic. I haven't heard it yet as I am not such a big fan.

Just a note: Bruce made a comment about piloting his plane to this concert in Ohio (Blossom Music Center near Akron). He said that he can always tell when he is getting close to this airport when he sees the woods and farm scenery that he loves. They played there at Blossom last summer, too, so he is familiar with that airport.

The new album is great. It gets better every time I listen to it. If you only listen to one song off the new album, let it be this one:

  5. I've mostly found Belgian Ales too sweet. Like Fat Tire.

    fat_tire_IMG_1189-tm.jpg

I don't care for it, but would love to try New Belgium's IPA that I pictured above. That should be bitter'er and hoppy !!

Ever tried Chimay, Rochefort, Westvleteren, Westmalle, or other Trappist beers? They're still pretty sweet (typically), but they are balanced by spices. I usually prefer bitter beers, but if I had a choice between a great IPA and a great Trappist, I'd go with the Trappist.

While Fat Tire is an American interpretation of a typical Belgian beer, the Trappist beers are the absolute best Belgium has to offer. We're talking about monks who have devoted over a century to perfecting the art of brewing.

  6. We have another winner. This is good stuff.

    samuel%20adams%20double%20bock.jpg

Now let me scrape myself off the floor. It's also strong!

I need to try that one. The best Sam Adams I've had was their Imperial Pilsner, but that one looks interesting too. Then again, I've had Celebrator, Optimator, and a few other great authentic German doppel bocks, so who knows how it would compare.

  7. As I've said in other threads, there are only two Zeppelin songs that I don't like. Nobody is saying all the songs they listed are crappy. All we're saying is that we like the other songs on that album more. Everything is on the 'good' side of the spectrum, it's just a matter of how good.

  8. I think that's probably nonsense. 1 beer from Britain and ZERO from Germany? :o Come on, Germany and Britain are two of the best places anywhere in the world for beer. I've been all over the world so I know from personal experience.

37 American beers and 0 from Germany? Something is wrong there. That's just insane.

The list is based on thousands of ratings from beer geeks around the world, so I'd hardly call it nonsense. Beeradvocate, another beer reviewing website, has a top 100 list that is also dominated by American beer (but two German beers barely cracked the top 50).

I've had the highest rated German beer on ratebeer (Celebrator Doppelbock). It was way too sweet for my tastes. I've also had the highest rated German beer on Beeradvocate (Weinstephaner Hefeweissbier). It was the best wheat beer I've ever had, but I still prefer a good, hoppy American IPA or stout.

As far as Britain, they created some of the best styles of beer (Imperial Stout, Double IPA, etc.), but American microbreweries perfected them.

The microbrew scene here is incredible. What's the best American beer you've ever had?

  9. I was tempted to try the Samuel Adams summer ale. Has anyone tried it? Is it good?

Yes. It's one of my lest favorite Sam Adams brews. The only one that comes to mind that I liked less was their White Ale, but they've discontinues that (guess I wasn't the only one).

If you want the best that Sam Adams has to offer (without spending hundreds) try their Imperial Pilsner. It's very, very good.

If you want a refreshing, fruity, summery beer, Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat is what you need.

American beer has the same reputation as British food. Both are unfairly criticised by outsiders. When you actually sift through the good stuff you'll be surprised. :)

Yeah, that's a huge misconception. I've been laughed at by a Canadian for how weak our beer is. I had to inform him that earlier that week I drank a 21% ABV beer brewed in Delaware.

America has most of the best microbreweries in the world. The only country that comes close to producing as much great beer as the US is Belgium. Germany, Canada, and Britain combined aren't even close.

RateBeer.com maintains a list of the world's top 50 beers. Here is a list of how many beers each of the countries I listed have in the top 50

    -Belgium: 7 beers

    -Britain: 1 beer

    -Canada: 1 beer

    -Germany: 0 beers

    -United States: 37 beers

  10. I have had a few of their beers. I recently bought the Cherry wheat ale. Its not bad but not something I can buy on a regualr basis. Still think Blue Moon is the best right now.

    Blue Moon is good.

Ever tried Hoegaarden? It's a Belgian White that's actually made in Belgium! ;)

  11. What's the best beer?

And the one that's in your hand at the time of the question!

    :D

That's like saying the best song is whatever is on the radio right now. It's proud ignorance.

  12. natural_light.jpg

. . . just kidding. I wouldn't drink that shit on a dare. Here are some of my favorites.

I really hope that's not a plastic cup. What a horrible fate for a $9 bottle of beer if so.

And if you ever wondered where my user name came from (I know you never have), it was from this beer and my favorite sport.

  13. Rush is one of the few bands that can compete with Zeppelin in terms of talent. It took me awhile to get used to Geddy's voice, but now they're one of my favorite bands. Peart is a monster.
