  1. The whole ARMS tour Jimmy performance gets a bad rap because of the one, singular London show, TMK, every show they played after that Page was great. Such a shame everyone remembers London yet forgets, or is not even aware of the rest of the tour. If anyone has a different recollection of the rest of Jimmy's performances on the tour please let me know.

I have not forgotten and I'm well aware of the rest of the tour.  Compare his playing on ARMS with that on the Firm Hammersmith video. No comparison.

    Just letting you know.

  2.

Thanks go to youtube poster Mark Zep for this full concert.

Yes thanks. Never saw the full concert. Just the few songs on the "MTV" version years ago.

I always thought this show especially was some of JImmys best playing post-Zep. Hard to believe just a year prior was the mess that was Jimmy's playing on the ARMS tour.

  3. Make that three. I really liked Jimmy's work with the B-Bender, he completely re-invented his playing style and approach to guitar in general with The Firm. Too bad he did not progress further with the B-Bender because he was doing things with that guitar I have never heard done in that fashion before or since.

I think Jimmy was on top of it on the video of the Firm live in 84. His B-bender stuff there on Closer was incredible.

But if you really want to be blown away get the Byrds Live at the Fillmore and listen to Clarence White. Jaw dropping. After all he did invent it. Never was a Byrds fan but Clarence is one of the greatest musicians ever.

  4. Good old Richfield. Saw several shows there including the Firm in '86 - the show where Jimmy was "sick" and still in Chicago (I think) so they postponed it a day. Since it was Mothers Day weekend they announced you can bring your Mom and she gets in free, I guess that was a consolation prize for the postponement. I think they had a special section for them or something like that.

  5. .. "I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK was entitled to his opinion.

It wasn't "returning hate for hate".

It was returning justice for crimes committed, and in that I rejoice.

  6. I've seen the second pic you posted, Steve, labeled in several books as being the first ever picture of the band, at their initial rehearsal when they played Train Kept a-Rolling, the photographer having just happened across them and taken a pic. All that could be completely wrong, as I don't have the books immediately to hand, but that's what my increasingly-faulty memory says, anyway.

It was it one of the special mags I think after the O2 as that also Aqua.

I'm too lazy to dig it out due to a lack of interest. ;)

  7. It's been awhile since I've broke them out, but listening to the Jan. and May Boston '69 shows, after the very first listen, I immediately thought it was more than likely one of the May shows if a 4-hour marathon occured. You can listen to the excitement build in the crowd as the show goes on. There's one moment (during Bonzo's solo maybe? can't recall precisely) that you can almost hear an actual "gasp" go through the crowd....in all my years of listening to boots from all sorts of bands, I don't ever recall hearing something like that in a crowd.

Makes me want to throw it in and give it another listen.

  8. It's funny, if Eddie attended the 5/31/73 show at The Forum Jimmy was performing with a sprained finger, sustained the day before. I'll have to check if he was there for any of

the June 21-23, 25-27 1977 gigs at the Forum. May have been touring with Van Halen

and missed those. Earlier in the thread someone wondered aloud who cares if Eddie met

Bonzo so I'll note in advance some may care not the Led Zeppelin concerts he attended.

Are you going to conduct an interview with him?

  9. Their first studio session for 'Led Zeppelin' was held Sept 27th 1968 at Abbey Road Studios. They recorded 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' & 'You Shook Me'. Their second

session was October 10 1968...two takes of 'Tribute to Bert Burns', among others.

The album sessions were completed by the end of the month, and Jimmy paid the

    studio's billing for 30 hours.

I don't have the Grant book in front of me at the moment either, but it would seem

to me he would have taken the 'Led Zeppelin' album masters with him to secure the

deal with Atlantic. Live album recordings were generally frowned upon at the time,

not to mention the hassle of having to capture the live environment. Why bother

with all that when you have the album you intend to release already in the can.

Here is one quote from Welch's book on Grant:

"...on December 19 their manager was enroute to America clutching the tapes for the first Led Zeppelin album together with the completed artwork and some live recordings from gigs." (p.67)

For some reason I'm thinking of another quote directly from Grant though that made me scratch my head because it didn't seem to be referring to their first album sessions. Guess it's not too crazy to think that Jimmy has recordings from their early shows. No doubt in my mind he would. Also no doubt that WE will never hear them either...unfortunately.

  10. I have always wondered if Jimmy would've recorded their first rehearsal. Imagine hearing the first notes Zep ever played together. My sneaking suspicion is yes, of course he did - why wouldn't he want to hear back later what they sounded like.

I recall in the Peter Grant book (too tired to dig it out now) his mentioning that he or Jimmy took live tapes of the band for them to listen to when they landed their record deal. It was either recordings of their first gigs or possibly rehearsals.....sidenote: obviously this was long before Gonzaga 12/68 so apparently Jimmy has earlier recordings then we do!
