Well, someone here in America does.

During the year, there are cup competitions that are played which are independent of the Premier League games and table/standings. This most recent game against Tottenham and Chelsea was in the League Cup competition (I forget who has corporate sponsorship of the name (is it Carabao?); to me, it's the League Cup - that's the original name and that's what I'm always calling it. I take comfort in the fact that many refer to it the same way). This game was the first leg in a two-legged semi-final; there will be another game at Stamford Bridge (Chelsea's home pitch) to settle the tie ("series" in American English) - whoever prevails on aggregate will go to the League Cup final (that's a one-off - one game only). The FA Cup is the other major domestic cup competition; these games are also independent of the Premier League table/standings.

Its a very strange way they do things IMOI.

Well, that's what they do. It gives people more to root for during the year than just how the teams at the top of the Premier League table might end up finishing in May.

Anyway, Chelsea won the second leg on penalty kicks, so they will be playing Man City at Wembley on the 24th in the League Cup final. (Side note: I was relieved to see that they didn't use the away-goal rule in the semi-final. I am absolutely no fan of that rule and I'm glad that they are becoming more open-minded about not always having it. Others may disagree.)

Any opinions here on ST: Discovery? I have heard nothing but hate regarding this series so on a lark I binged watched the whole first season during a CBS All Access free weekend and liked it quite a bit. In fact, what I have seen thus far makes the show, IMO, superior to all the ST series with the exception of TOS.

I believe the stories and writing are much better, more adult driven (kill Wesley, Nog, and Neelix), and just better in general. However what I really like are the Klingons and how they are portrayed. In the other ST shows they are simply violent buffoons, complete idiots who could never have built a small town much less an empire. In Discovery they have nuance, they have structure like every other race and not everyone is a psycho warrior. They even give a rational reason for why the Klingons are dicks not unlike our own human history (they are simply trying to unite their society and need a scapegoat as a focus to such an end).

    So, what ya all think???

No, you're not alone - I really enjoy "Discovery". I wish to hell they would just show it on TV on CBS proper, but I guess they want to be in vogue... (I waited until it came out on BluRay to watch the whole series beyond the first show - if there is anyone on the fence about buying it, I do recommend the BluRay. The effects and picture quality are stunning.)

After TNG, I didn't like any of the subsequent ST series. Of course, for me, the original ST is the gold standard (in fact, right now, I am in the middle of my yearly ritual of watching all three series, from the first show of Season 1 to the last show of Season 3 consecutively - I just began Season 3 last night - Spock just got his brain back, for those in the know...).

What I like about Discovery is that it has real grit to it: it's dark. I also think that's one of the reasons that they are doing streaming only, i.e., they can get away with stuff on a streaming format that a traditional TV show might shy away from. (I guess interspecies mating was one of the tipping points.) Anyway, a good storyline and characters who are interesting are the two main selling points. The plot twist near the end of the series I was not expecting at all - that always makes for good viewing.

I will re-watch the series after I end my January ritual. I guess I'll have to wait until the end of the year to get the season 2 BluRay set - but, I will definitely get it!

The Who announced a farewell tour in the early 80s, but nowadays, it's no stunt.

A lot of bands and artists are beginning to pack it in for real.

Yes, I remember that tour back in 1982. That version of The Who did die then, as the original band did when Moon went to Drummers' Heaven.

Yes, that's one of the few reasons why I wasn't missing this tour. I think this is really it. (Although I also think Townshend will continue solo for a bit longer after this tour...)

Got my ticket for MSG, NYC this morning! I may decide to catch them in Philly too.

Roger has conceded that this may be his/their last tour - not exactly news, but it was good to hear him be honest about the strong possibility.

New album out by the end of the year (if you buy a ticket, you get a complimentary copy of the album when it comes out), and the show are planned to be symphonic as well - mini-orchestras from each city will be playing along with them.

    Looking forward to it!

Does anyone over there across the bloody pond know why this damn game today did not count in the Premier League standings?  Tottenham over Chelsea?  Unless they are just lazy in giving them their 3 points.  Closing in on Liverpool

    Congratulations!

I could have sworn there was a more recent Whiskey/Whisky/Bourbon thread here on the Forum...started by KiwiZepFan? But I couldn't find it. This was all that came up in the search...and misspelled thread titles are pet peeve of mine. There should be a way to fix misspellings in Topic titles.

Anyway, I indulged in quite a lot of whiskey on my birthday. Bourbon to be more precise.

Blanton's Single Barrel was tops. Followed by Four Roses Single Barrel. Buffalo Trace Kentucky Bourbon wasn't bad for the low price. And because I'm half-Irish, I had a few pours of Jameson and Tullamore Dew Irish whiskeys.

    My preferred whiskey:
