  1. I think what the recent ABBA new releases has shown us is that fans don’t really want new music from bands from such a long time ago. ABBA were probably one of the most wanted reunions with huge money offered but didn’t succumb. I may be a bit out of touch but it seems to me their new music made a big splash and then… not a lot. I doubt they will sell, or be streamed, anywhere near their original songs, even over the next twenty years

What their fans really want is for them to play a few gigs so they can dance and sing along to Dancin Queen, and if they were at such an imagined gig, they probably wouldn’t want the new tunes, because they’re not the same.

Fortunately ABBA are sensible enough to realise they can’t recreate those times and that’s why their legacy continues, because they haven’t cashed it in.

Page & Plant wrote some new tunes back in 94 and 97(?) on the Clarksdale album and the few from the Unledded project. Same thing,  we don’t hear anyone shouting for a continuation of those songs, or radios playing them. Folk just want what they know and like

Update: Having checked my files I now see the General Wolfe details I have are for a gig on Dec 19, 1982 that was cancelled most likely on account of ongoing studio sessions and Robert's reluctance to have the line-up begin touring in Britain. So your recollection for Wed, May 13, 1981 has been accepted as unconfirmed for further investigation.

There were plenty of rumours of Planty playing at the General Wolfe, Coventry, but he definitely did play there once as I have a clipping from the next weeks local paper, and remember it happening well. However I didn’t keep the date of the report. Most of the rumours came to nought. I went along one night on one of those unsubstantiated rumoured nights

  3. On the old forum there was a list of all the bloopers, including;

at the end of a solo in ten years gone you can hear Page pull the lead out his guitar
in Misty mountain hop Jones plays a wrong note
Squeaky bas pedal in SIBLY and another song (I forget which but it isn’t as noticeable)
The phone in the ocean ( I don’t understand how anyone could miss it)
In Kashmir traces of the original strings are still audible in a couple of places

    i can’t remember the rest

Hello, sorry it's a bit late, but Robert played with the Honeydrippers at the General Wolfe in 1981 on the day that the Pope got shot. I was there queuing up and remember discussing the shooting with one of the crew. Cheers

i remember this well. i wasn't there, but at the time in the local paper (Coventry Evening Telegraph) the music column ran several "mystery guest at the Wolfe?' entries, which meant Planty. i went along  following one of those tips to see the DTs who he was rumoured to be getting up to play with, but he didn't.

didn't he play there twice in that period?

    I looked it up.

Outrider was at the height of Zeppelin mania post 1980 in the US.  It hit #26 on the US album charts and sold 500,000 copies in the US.  OK, but not great.  I recall those days.  There was a voracious appetite for anything Zeppelin, but apparently not for a solo album.  They had their debacles at Live Aid and Atlantic 40th of course, and Page toured with Jason for Outride.

Coverdale Page hit #5 and sold 1,000,000 in the US, and that was also a big time for Zeppelin.

The Firm reached #17 and sold 500,000 in the US.  Big tour in the US.

Mean Business reached only #22 in the US.

Death Wish II - right after the end of Zeppelin and around the time of Coda, reached on #50 on the US charts.

And those were all before streaming services and YouTube.

Well done, thanks. Very interesting and it hardly suggests that an instrumental album from him now, when he’s old and out of practise, does it?

just maybe after the O2 he may have sold more but that’s a long time ago (14 years?). At the last shows he has attended, he’s either not played at all (Japan) played backing only (Beck) or played but ducked out of a solo (that guitar players event, I forget where)

    He’s finished. Move on

Why cant he make an INSTRUMENTAL record??That would sell millions in NORTH AMERICA and the rest....but he REALLY need to stop dangling empty promises. It's uncool. And he's still cool to me. At this point he's 77 so recordings are good enough for me or even a special concert televised instead of body bashing tours...even if they do take 2 nights off. These dudes are old guys now. They ALL look way better than they deserve and the ones who work still play better than ever.

Millons? You  at be right but I seriously doubt it. How many copies did he sell of his Outrider album I wonder. It hardly set the world alight did it. Do you play it much?

I have no desire for an album from him. If he wants to fair enough, but I’m really not fussed, the world has moved on

He could do a televised concert but I seriously doubt he ever would as he wouldn’t risk messing up again. He’d be more likely to play two or three and cobble something together from it, and that would involve a lot of practice and time and though I have no more certainty than you I’d wager a sum it will never happen

Never ever heard this tale before either. What is possible is Jones and Anderson might have spoken about recorders, and Jones had the idea. Jones himself said he had recorders and he wanted to use them, but at first Jimmy wasn't keen.  Also, it was not Abbey Road....it was Island Studios. Here is a very excellent analysis of Jones Recorder arrangement.

Very interesting. I’ve never cared much for the recorders intro and much prefer the keyboard live version

According to Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull was recording Aqualung at Abbey Road Studio's the same time LZ was recording IV. Tull was using recorders for several tracks and when members of both bands met during a break Tull members were invited to 'sit in' (uncredited) and contribute the recorder tracks to Stairway.

In forty years of reading about Zeppelin I’ve never once heard any such notion. If someone in Tull had have played a recorder on the recording I think they’d have revealed all long ago. It didn’t happen.

I wouldn't take Grand Funk's word for it that they blew Zep off the stage - we'd need a more objective source, otherwise it's just macho boasting. Someone from Lynrd Skynrd (or however it's spelled!) said the same thing about Knebworth - not '79, an earlier gig. Pfft.

That’s be Knebworth 76 when indeed Skynyrd were fantastic and the Stones were lacklustre

Since you are talking about these issues I'd like to have some peace of mind with the most precious thing I have (materially), which are my twelve super deluxe boxes.

I'm really a newbie in everything that has to do with vinyl, I don't currently have any turntable. So in 2019 to check that all the vinyl in the twelve boxes were okay I went to a friend's recording studio and tested them all on a "Pioneer Plx-500 Dj" turntable but the pick was "Ortofon 2m Red".

All the vinyls were perfect, except for a few songs where apparently some dust was gathered and it "skidded", but then we passed a brush to the vinyl and it worked perfectly.

I only have three doubts regarding the state of my vinyl:

    1) The first vinyl of 'Led Zeppelin II', I forgot to put it on 33 and I put it on 45, I immediately changed it to the right speed and there was no problem. Did that affect or will affect the vinyl?

    2) The first vinyl of 'Houses Of The Holy', was not attached properly to the turntable, so it was "floating" for a few seconds, but immediately we put it back correctly and it worked perfectly. Same question: Did or will it affect the vinyl?

    3) Was the turntable "Pioner Plx-500 Dj" with the "Ortofon 2m Red" pick correct for testing the vinyl? I mean, it doesn't damage the vinyl like those Crosleys, right?

    Thanks!

Deep Purple was around before Zep. Even though they had some success with the huge hit in Hush, Blackmore was still not happy with the direction of the band because he loved heavier music like Hendrix who was his favorite guitarist.  After seeing Led Zeppelin he thought Plant was great.  Blackmore axed Purples first singer and recruited a singer that could compete with... not “imitate”  Plant. Enter Ian Gillan.  Plant So good that he was picked to sing as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar after the creators heard Child in Time off In Rock which is a masterpiece.

Like most bands Purple were equally good at nicking stuff from other bands. It’s interesting you mentioned Child in Time as they nicked that. It’s been a while since I’ve heard it so forget the song title but it was from a band named It’s a beautiful day.

  12. If you’re going into the expensive vinyl world you need to know that cleanliness is essential, Get a carbon fibre brush, some and a stylus cleaner, at the least and use them. I have a vinyl cleaning machine for old vinyl. In the main i find crackling is caused by dust and dirt and not scratched vinyl. I wish I’d have known thirty years ago what I know now
