  1. Pink Floyd must have being doing something right during their career, as it is reported that they sold over 210 million albums worldwide, whilst The Dark Side Of The Moon achieved a total of 1,500 weeks (over 28 years) on the Billboard and Pop Catalogue charts.

Overrated, or what?...I don't think so.

    RB

    They certainly are not underrated.

When you sell that many albums you only can be overrated

  2. Congratulations Canada

Sarah Palin falls victim to pranksters after accepting an on-air invitation to hunt baby seals from 'President Sarkozy'By Mail Foreign Service

Sarah Palin fell prey to a radio prankster when he pretended to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy and talked her into accepting an invitation to hunt baby seals.

An apparently oblivious Mrs Palin told the caller, a Canadian comedian using an over-the-top French accent, she thought the hunting expedition would be fun.

The prankster also got Mrs Palin to reveal she may one day go for the top job in Washington.

Trick shot: Sarah Palin told Canadian pranksters impersonating French President Nicolas Sarkozy they could have a lot of fun on a helicopter hunting trip

The Alaskan governor and Republican running mate of Senator John McCain talked for nearly six minutes.

The conversation touched on topics such as a Hustler porn video made about her, Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting ability, Mr Sarkozy's ' beautiful wife' and how the French leader could 'see Belgium' from his house.

Scroll down to read the full transcript of the conversation between Sarah Palin and the pranksters

Asked if she would like to eventually become president, Mrs Palin responded, 'Well, maybe in eight years.'

She was called by a member of the Quebec comedy duo The Masked Avengers who have tricked other celebrities and politicians - including Mr Sarkozy himself.

  3. Makes you wonder doesn't it ! I guess Harper feels that we're all a sleep at the wheel ( he's probably right ..lol ) and will just follow along as we tend to do in this country.

I do agree that the gov. isn't working at the moment but he should stick to his own pledge and go with the fixed election date. Clearly he is worried that he will form the opposition if he waits

If he would just have a cigar instead of an election i would say hats off to harper

  4. They have nothing we don't have here in the USA. We are there for them, but they are not there for us.

Have you heard of Oil? You also have a current account deficit with Canada so obviously there are things that Canada has that you dont have

  5. If that is correct (which I don't doubt) it would nevertheless look a bit strange for France alone.

Pink Floyd has always been the most popular by far until the 90's when Queen really swarmed radios. From those three, Queen is probably still the band which is the more often broadcasted on radios. Led Zeppelin is more less on air and almost always with Strairway to Heaven, still considered too long by some radios. A huge majority of people have known the Kashmir riff from the Godzilla soundtrack only.

Concerning sales there is a chart of the top selling artists in France (estimated) between 1995 and 2006 here. (Pink Floyd is #20, Queen is #47 and Led Zep #142)

Thanks to all of you for sharing your stats by the way :)

Thankyou for sharing your input and perspective. The only thing I would add that from what i recall Zeppelin back-catalog is stronger than the numbers would suggest. Zep I 11 and IV are always chart on catalog seller charts( I think they are called mid-price charts in France if memory serves me correctly)

  6. UK

    1)Queen by miles

    2)Pink Floyd

    3) Zeppelin

Euro-really? 'By miles' are you sure? I saw Queen twice in the 1970's and they were just another rock band that you could see if you wanted to. No real sense of significance about their shows. No real sense of occasion or of being at an'event'other than a show by a good band. Zeppelin,on the other hand...the announcement of the Knebworth show[and then the second show, announced just after] was and still is probably the single biggest concert announcement I can recall.Until the O2 show, that is.

As has been pointed out here, Queen embraced video technology very early on .They also released and assiduously promoted singles from every album, which boosted their profile and kept them in the public eye in a very professional way. I tend to think of Queen as a very good, hard-working pop

group. Their profile and image was almost as big than Zep's by 1979 and these increased on through the 80's

But...by 1979 they'd done nothing to compare with the Knebworth shows and their album sales excluding best of/big hits/greatest etc were small in comparison with Zep at that point. The single most significant thing that happened to Queen was that Zep withdrew in 1980,at which point Queen's career takes off and they approach ,but only approach[not actually arrive at,let alone surpass] Zep's popularity here[England]

I am using album sales as a measure and I understand that over 50% of those sales are greatest Hits packages but that is the UK market for you. The gap is too big to ignore

"We will rock You" also helped Queen alot too in the UK. It really helps when people are trying to sell you a cd while your watching a stage performance.

  7. Just to Stir the pot a litte more, I will rate Floyd,Queen and Zeppelin, interspersed with some other bands in terms of popuarity by country

    USA and Canada

    1)Zeppelin by miles

    2 Floyd

    3)Queen( a distant,distant third

    Australia

    1)Led Zeppelin

    2)Queen

    3)Pink Floyd

This is very debatable. I wonder where AC/DC ranks on this list?

    New Zealand

    1)Pink Floyd

    2)Queen

    3)Led Zeppelin

2 and 3 may be debatable

    UK

    1)Queen

    1)Pink Floyd

    2)Queen

    3)Led Zeppelin

Between countries Floyd and Queen may exchange 1 and 2

Looking forward to any input from people with respect to country they live in?

  8. Are you going on actual record sales or just judging by the huge concert crowds that Queen played to there (whereas Led Zeppelin never managed to play there).

Their music is more well known and from the scant info on sales they appear to have sold more records there(which is not saying much since a country like Canada can sell more records for some rock releases than the entire South American Continent. Records are very expensive there. That is the impression i get when you speak to people from the continent.

Maybe some forum members from the region can add their perspective?

  9. I think they are in a general memory of the people who have listened to this kind of music.

It's adequate to the general promotion (and now I don't mean only radios etc. but also the management of the band). There were no large Europe tours.

I've always been surrounded by people who like or at least know the band.

The situation concerning Eastern Europe is a bit complicated, because people did not have an easy access to the albums. Although I don't think that makes it 'special.'

How about Asia or Southern America?

Popular in Latin America for english rock band, but probably not as popular as Queen.

Asia: Japan-again popular for english rock group but not as popular as say Madonna,Abba and of course domestic acts

  10. I don't know why you keep saying Deep Purple. They are FAR less well known on the continent than Led Zeppelin and always were.

Deep Purple were huge in Germany, great chart runs on their albums but that was not representative of the continent

  11. F.ck, we lost! :(

    @Mangini

Maybe I didn´t make it clear enough that I meant CONTINENTAL Europe. I can´t speak for the UK.

I work for a big media company and I did some research: LZ have been played by Austrian radio stations (market of 8 million people) FOUR (!) times in the year 2007.

    :( :( :( :( :(

Proud Mary by CCR about 100 times per WEEK!!!!

    Double that for Smokie...

I know they were more like pop bands but this is about general popularity, right?

Easy Livin´, Lady In Black, Child In Time, Proud Mary, Highway Star, Children Of The Revolution - HARD TO BELIEVE BUT IT`S TRUE - songs by other bands were just more "popular" in Germany, France, Italy, etc.

LZ just weren´t commercial enough to be played whether on Top40-radio or by cover bands.

And it´s not about record sales alone. It´s also about how often they´ve been covered by magazines, TV coverage and - most important - AIRPLAY!

Thank god this changed a bit since kids started to buy LZ records after the Grunge thing happened.

    Some Austrian Chart positions

Zeppelin Early Days - The Best Of Led Zeppelin Volume One 09.01.2000 23 8

    Peak Weeks

    Led Zeppelin Houses Of The Holy 1973 15.05.1973 3 1 2

Led Zeppelin How The West Was Won 08.06.2003 1 7 6

Led Zeppelin In Through The Outdoor 1979 15.10.1979 20 4

    Led Zeppelin Mothership 2007 23.11.2007 4 13

    Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti 1975 15.04.1975 2 12

    Led Zeppelin Remasters 1990 13.01.1991 19 10

Not bad performance for a band that apparently is never played in Austria. If Mothership could peak at #4 in Austrian without any airplay that is an accomplishment

PG peaked at #2,Houses of the Holy#3 and Mothership #4. In through the out door to #20,(pretty dismal performance of the album right across Europe) even in UK while it made #1 its stint in the Top Ten was very short.

In Canada,on the other hand. In through the out door was in Top 10 for nearly 6 months! In the USA a similar chart performance

  12. TO ALL THE GUYS FROM THE US and UK..

    Regarding AOR:

To run an AOR-station properly, you need a metropolitan area! Of course there are big cities in Europe but the metropolitan areas around them are less important and not as big as the American ones.

So in continental Europe there are pretty much Top-40-stations, only very few stations dare to play a bit of Album-Rock. So until now almost NO LZ ON THE RADIO!

    You nailed it right on.

The reason Zeppelin were so huge in USA and Canada was the availability on AOR radio in the 70s.This was not the case in Continental Europe and even the UK which was dominated by BBC(who like to keep a tight rein on what was played on radio).

  13. For starters, I live in the midwest United States.

Here, they may play Zeppelin on the radio a few times, but its the same old songs (Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid and Stairway to Heaven). What a shame! There is one station I've found that still plays whole albums on a certain night of the week, and Zeppelin's been on it a few times, but other than that, NOTHING.

I'm 23, and none of my friends are into them... they recongize that they are "good", but they will never be the ones to pop them into the stereo... its always me. They're more into modern stuff like Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, etc. (which I think are good too). Its not that they have bad taste in music, its just that I don't think they've really look into the roots of the music that all their favorite bands are playing

Most people I know in the U.S. just know Zeppelin for that one song (yes, Stairway to Heaven, which in my opinion isn't even among their top 25 songs). This is a crying shame.

I got into the Zeppelin when I was about 12 - my mother, yes, my mother, bought the BBC Sessions album, and the first time I heard it played, I stole it from her. I don't even know why she got it, she has never expressed particular interest in Zeppelin or that type of music.. its as if some higher power made her buy it just to introduce me to them. Needless to say, I blew out plenty of sets of speakers with it. Then I got every studio album (one way or another). Then I got the official DVD - the Royal Albert Hall performance on it inspired me to get into more live Zeppelin. Just within the last year I found out about the vasts amounts of bootlegs available, and now, I must have about 50 or so live performances.

For me, Zeppelin shapes my life, but as for the general populus, I don't think they really know Led Zeppelin, and only know them for "that one song".

I think if you were to do some research on US sales you would come to different conclusion. When you sell a 100 million album plus in one country it certaintly not only because of that " one song"

  14. USA and Canada: massive. I dont think a rock group can get any bigger(with the exception of the Beatles)

UK. Popular but not of the stature as in North America and nowhere near as popular as in North America. Oaisis and Queen are much bigger in UK among other groups

Contintental Europe;respectable following but not as big as say Queen or Pink Floyd. They dont receive saturation radio play there in key markets like France,Germany,Italy like they do in North America

Latin America; popular for english rock group but not as popular as say Queen and nothing compared to domestic acts

Japan;popular for english rock group but nothing in comparison to domestic acts.

  15. In southern Greece. It was a place called........... erm.. Halkidiki or something like that haha can't really remember

Funny, I have been to so many places in Greece but Halkdiki is not one of them. I hear it is beautiful though

  16. I know what mean you cos that's what I hate about some bands, but that's not the case with ELP in my opinion. Plus not all his music was about technical viruosity, listen to Greg Lake's ballads for example like Lucky Man, there's not virtuosism at all there.

Greg Lake made a great contribution n the first King Crimson Album In the Court of the Crimson King
