  1. For some reason the lead actor here reminded me of the young Christopher Walken -his name is Aksel Hennie.

(And just reading his filmography on imdb I realise that he's the same actor who portrayed Max Manus!)

I really liked the acting of Eivind Sander as a security guard, I think his was the only "true" character in the movie, easy-going and good natured but not naïve.

    * As I side note, I didn't place Jo Nesbø as being the lead singer of Di Derre, a very good band from Norway which I happen to like, no wonder they say it's a small world we live in.

Vozvrascheniye is now a 10-year old film set in the depths of the Siberian taiga whose director, Andrei Zvyaguintsev, despite his young age, has been hailed as a new Tarkovski.

The film is dark and complex. Only the beautiful landscapes of Siberia add a touch of brightness to this otherwise depressive story which at times can be hard to stomach -specially the final, tragic scene.

Vozvrascheniye is about a father (Konstantin Lavronenko) who after a prolonged absence returns home to his two sons and wife. The kids have mixed feelings of love and hate towards a man who hasn’t been but a stranger to them. When the three decide to embark on a road trip through deep Siberia, an experience that’s supposed to reconciliate them, the rifts between father and sons widen and prove to be of tragic and definitive consequences.

  3. I saw Katyn a few years ago. I thought it was slow but builds a lot of tension until the final scene which is difficult to watch.

There were a lot of excellent WWII movies produced around the time of Katyn's release, of which I can mention the Norwegian Max Manus and the Danish Flame and Citron which stars Mads Mikkelsen. These last two films are among the best of the WWII genre, in my opinion, very realistic recreations of the periods and excellent actors chosen to portray Nazis and members of the resistance. Cristian Berkel, for instance, also appeared in Tarantino's Bastards.

  4. I haven't bought any books recently, for some reason I just remembered the closing down of the French bookstore in Manhattan, which I think was in the basement of the Rockefeller Center. I last visited in 2006 or 2008, and I remember an old man with a white beard working there. Several weeks, months, after my visit the library went out of business and I think there was an announcement printed in a major New York journal, my memory of those days is blurry, must be the natural process of getting older...
