  1. What do you mean by a "chart-oriented" album? If you mean an album aimed at the masses, I don't think Neil Young has it in him to do such a thing. Even if he did, Trans most certainly wasn't it. You have to remember, this is a person that recorded a string of what he percieved to be bad albums just so he could get out of his contract with Geffen Records at the time.
  2. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/articl...t_id=1003684939 Young Opens New York Run After Lengthy Delay Jonathan Cohen, N.Y. Undeterred by a fire department investigation and a subsequent nearly 90-minute delay, Neil Young opened a six-night run Wednesday (Dec. 12) at New York's United Palace Theatre with a stellar performance drawn equally from new material as it was vintage gems. Young's wife Pegi was supposed to open the show with a solo set around 8 p.m., but due to an investigation to ensure the venue was up to current fire code, no fans were let inside until well after 9 p.m. The scene outside was one of mass confusion, with a line stretching around the block and multiple police and fire vehicles parked outside. Once fans were allowed to enter, it was decided that the opening set would be scrapped and that Young would take the stage directly for a solo acoustic sequence. He didn't disappoint, liberally switching from guitar to piano to banjo on classics such as "A Man Needs a Maid," "Harvest," "Old Man" and "Heart of Gold." He called the fire code problem a "bullsh*t excuse," but then joked, "unless I catch on fire or something." He also gave appreciation to the intimate venue, saying, "It's great to be able to play like this. [Years ago], I never thought it was going to get any bigger." After a short break, Young returned with an electric band and promptly tore into rockers like "The Loner," "Dirty Old Man" and "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere." "The Believer" was dedicated to Ike Turner, who had passed away earlier in the day, while "No Hidden Path" ran well past 20 minutes and featured some of Young's loudest playing of the evening. The encore closed another long jam on "Like a Hurricane." Young and company return to the United Palace tonight. Here is Neil Young's set list: Acoustic set: "From Hank to Hendrix" "Ambulance Blues" "Sad Movies" "A Man Needs a Maid" "No One Seems To Know" "Harvest" "Journey Through the Past" "Mellow My Mind" "Love Art Blues" "Old Man" "Heart of Gold" Electric set: "The Loner" "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" "Dirty Old Man" "Spirit Road" "Bad Fog of Loneliness" "Winterlong" "Oh, Lonesome Me" "The Believer" "No Hidden Path" Encore: "Cinnamon Girls" "Don't Cry No Tears" "Like a Hurricane"
  3. For Immediate Release: THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES ITS INDUCTEES FOR 2008 New York -- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation today announced its inductees for 2008. The inductees will be honored at a ceremony on March 10, 2008, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. "The 2008 inductees are trailblazers – all unique and influential in their genres," said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman. "From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll itself. We are proud to honor these artists and celebrate their contribution to rock and roll's place in our culture." The performer inductees are: * Leonard Cohen * The Dave Clark Five (Dave Clark, Lenny Davidson, Rick Huxley, Denis Payton and Mike Smith) * Madonna * John Mellencamp * The Ventures (Bob Bogle, Nokie Edwards, Gerry McGee, Mel Taylor, Don Wilson) The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also announced the induction of Little Walter in its sideman category, and the newly named "Ahmet Ertegun Award" (formerly the non-performer category) will be presented to legendary producers, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performer inductees were chosen by the 600 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twenty-five years after their first recording is released. In addition to being honored at the March ceremony, each inducted artist is commemorated at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland Ohio, which serves as a monument to rock and roll's impact on our culture. There, this year's inductees will be honored – along with previous year's inductees and hundreds of other artists – with exhibits, video and interactive presentations and programs that serve to tell the story of modern music. The Hall of Fame itself will include artifacts from this year's inductees, a multi-media presentation with highlights from each artist's career and their signatures permanently engraved in the glass walls of the Hall of Fame. Presenters and performers at the induction will be announced at a later date. The induction ceremony will again air live on VH1 Classic on March 10, 2008. ### More about the inductees: With the 1966 release of In My Life by Judy Collins, containing Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and "Dress Rehearsal Rag," Cohen became a folk rock icon of the singer songwriter movement. Already an acclaimed poet and novelist in his native Canada, Cohen moved to New York in 1967 and released his classic album Songs of Leonard Cohen on Columbia Records. Its music launched Leonard Cohen into the highest and most influential echelon of songwriters. Cohen's elegiac work is widely used in film and covered by artists from Jeff Buckley to Bono to Bob Dylan to R.E.M. As Kurt Cobain said, "Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld so I can sigh eternally." One of the most successful British Invasion bands of the Sixties, The Dave Clark Five topped the UK charts in 1965 with their iconic pop song "Glad All Over." Thundering production set the DC5 apart. Their slick melodic sensibility masked their boom factor: The DC5 were the loudest group in the U.K. until the advent of The Who. Drummer, songwriter and manager Dave Clark provided a perfect foundation for Mike Smith's soulful vocals. Reaching the Top Forty 17 times in just three years, with more appearances on the Ed Sullivan show than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, the DC5 were an enormous pop phenomenon before disbanding in 1970. The Dave Clark Five have sold more than 50 million records worldwide to date. Doors opened wide for Madonna Louise Ciccone in 1982, after five years as a singer and dancer on New York City's competitive club circuit. She signed with Sire Records (her label for the next 14 years) where her idiosyncratic persona exploded onto turntables, dance floors and airwaves and captured the imagination of the first generation of MTV viewers. She went on to become the top female star of the 1980s with seven #1 hits, three #1 albums and seventeen top ten hits in that decade. In addition to molding her public image, Madonna is a meticulous studio craftsperson and completely uninhibited stage performer. From her first #1, 1984's "Like A Virgin" (produced by Nile Rogers of Chic) to her most recent two year Confessions campaign, Madonna remains one of the most ferociously original artists in music today. Over the course of his career, John Mellencamp has become a symbol of the hopes, struggles and passions of America's heartland. As a songwriter, many of his efforts have transcended "hit" status ("Hurts So Good," "Pink Houses," "I Need A Lover") and have entered the cultural vernacular. Mellencamp's musical heart is in his ballads and rock numbers rooted in late 50s and early 60s rock and roll. His music describes the American experience; the hopes and fears of the common everyman. As co-founder of Farm Aid, Indiana's favorite son gives voice to issues that might otherwise be ignored, from our disappearing farmlands to the role of race and class in America. From Seattle, The Ventures defined instrumental guitar rock in the 1960s. Their hits bookended the decade, from 1960's "Walk Don't Run" to 1969's "Hawaii Five-O." Nokie Edwards' twang-guitar and the crisp rhythm of Don Wilson, bassist Bob Bogle and drummer Mel Taylor gave every Ventures album their trademark bent note sound. Long admired by other bands like the Beatles (and especially George Harrison), Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh, Aerosmith, and others, The Ventures hit the Billboard chart nearly three dozen times in the 1960s. The transparent stereo mixes enabled guitarists to isolate and learn every riff, an idea that fueled 1965's essential instruction LP Play Guitar With The Ventures. Founders of surf rock, The Ventures inspired a classic line of Mosrite guitars and have maintained a flourishing touring and recording career for decades, especially in Europe and Japan. Little Walter (May 1, 1930 – February 15, 1968) Although Little Walter might not have been the first person to amplify the harmonica, his pioneering use of the microphone helped establish the modern blues harmonica. With a mike clasped to his harp, Little Walter created echoing, moaning, hornlike sounds that redefined the capabilities of the instrument. Walter Jacobs had fourteen top ten hits on the R&B charts in the 1950's including two number #1 songs "Juke" and "My Babe." Little Walter toured and recorded extensively with blues great Muddy Waters in the 1950's. He also recorded with Jimmy Rogers, Memphis Minnie, Otis Rush and Bo Diddley. Little Walter's influence was pervasive, especially in England where the next generation of harp players such as Mick Jagger listened to his records over and over. Songwriters-producers and record label owners Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff made Philadelphia the soul capitol in the 1970's. Gamble and Huff's label Philadelphia International had a stable of artists that included the O'Jays, McFadden & Whitehead, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Lou Rawls and Dee Dee Sharp. Their records featured the duo's trademark sound: lush string orchestrations, a powerful rhythm section and a disco beat. They also worked with Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett, and Jerry Butler among others. In 1990, Gamble and Huff won a Grammy for best R&B song, awarded for Simply Red's cover of the Blue Notes' 1972 hit "If You Don't Know Me By Know." And in 1999, they won the Grammy Trustees Award.
  4. There's already a VH thread underway here if ya wanna check it out: http://forums.ledzeppelin.com//index.php?showtopic=200
  5. Here's what Wiki says, a quick glance at some other sources I Googled back it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Moon Moon was Paul McCartney's guest at a film preview of The Buddy Holly Story on 7 September 1978. After dining with Paul and Linda McCartney, Moon and his girlfriend, Annette Walter-Lax, returned to a flat on loan from Harry Nilsson in Curzon Place, London. He overdosed on Clomethiazole (Heminevrin), a medication taken as part of a programme to wean him off alcohol. The police investigation determined there were about 32 pills in his system, some undissolved. He was 32 years old.
  6. Trans? To each their own but if that's the album you're refering to I'm very glad he did it, as that record was years ahead of it's time. That's one of the many cool things about Neil, he's never been one to follow trends but he isn't afraid to set them in motion or take chances musicially.
  7. If not for Sly and the Family Stone there would be no Funkadelic. I'm sure George Clinton would be the first to tell you that.
  8. PATTERSON HOOD'S TOP TEN NEW ALBUMS (+REISSUES / UNRELEASES / DISQUALIFIERS and honorable mentions) Every year I find myself compiling a list of my favorite albums and other things. Compared to 06, this year was a little bit anti-climactic, only because last year had such a bounty of amazing albums and even better films. That said, the albums, movies and other things on this list would make for a stellar year at any point in my memory. Apologies to the better movies I haven't yet seen or better albums I haven't yet heard. I bought a lot of music and saw a good number of films, but there's only so many hours in a day. I always revise my lists later and that could surely happen again this year. Stay Tuned. PATTERSON HOOD - TOP TEN (new releases) 2007 1. IRON AND WINE - THE SHEPHERDS DOG - An incredible album that rewards multiple listens and my pick for the best album of the year. 2. RADIOHEAD - IN RAINBOWS - My close pick for second favorite. After all the hype of how it was released (or not), the album stands on its own as their best work since Kid A, maybe better. 3. WILCO - SKY BLUE SKY - Their best studio album. Even better when played live. Possibly the best band in America. 4. VIC CHESNUTT - NORTH STAR DESERTER - I've been saying this is his finest since West of Rome (1992) but upon further listening, this is his best album ever. 5. SPOON -GA GA GA GA GA - My vote for most fun album of year. Great live act also. 6. WHITE STRIPES - ICKY THUMP - Their finest album yet. inventive and a total blast. 7. RICKIE LEE JONES - THE SERMON ON EXPOSITION AVE. - Her finest album since 1981's masterpiece Pirates. Beautiful and inspiring. 8. PORTER WAGONER - WAGONMASTER - Thank God, he got to make this album before his sad departure this year. Kudos to Anti Records and Marty Stuart for making this happen. 9. BO BEDDINGFIELD AND THE WYDELLES - CLEARGREEN - Hard to find, self released EP from Athens GA. Well worth seeking out for great writing, singing and playing. 10. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - MAGIC - Best Springsteen album since Nebraska, his best Rock album since The River. A little over-produced, but still essential. REISSUES / UNRELEASES / DISQUALIFIERS and honorable mentions SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE - THERE'S A RIOT GOING ON (reissue) - My most listened to album of year and a revelation. DEXATEENS - SINGLEWIDE - (unreleased) Not the one I co-produced. This one is newer, better and still unreleased (produced by Mark Nevers). A total departure and fantastic. Look for it in 08. BIG STAR - 3RD - (vinyl reissue, correct sequence) Finally, the correct order, or at least the best sequence I've ever heard. A masterpiece that sounds MUCH better on vinyl. PATTI GRIFFIN - CHILDREN RUNNING THROUGH - An amazing artist at her best. The duet w/ Emmylou sends chills at every listen. PJ HARVEY - WHITE CHALK - A quiet subdued beautiful work of art. Her best in 7 years. ECCENTRIC SOUL vol. 7 - HOME SCHOOLED (The ABC's of Kid Soul) - This is exactly what it says, the kid groups that didn't hit it big like the Jacksons. Incredible. BETTYE LAVETTE - THE SCENE OF THE CRIME - I couldn't really put this in my top ten, as my band and my Dad played on it and I co-produced it, but it really deserves special mention and "Talking Old Soldiers" would have put it in my top ten had I not been in any way involved. MOVIES / LIVE SHOWS / BOOKS and WHATNOTS SCHULZ AND PEANUTS by David Michaelis Great book on the creator of Charlie Brown. A fine glimpse into the relationship between a life and art. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (Film by Joel and Ethan Coen / Novel by Cormac McCarthy)- My fave film of year and an incredible timeless read by one of the best living authors. EASTERN PROMISES (film by David Cronenberg) - Terrifying and suspenseful movie. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E. STREET BAND - United Center, Chicago IL 10/21/07 Still the best arena rock show in the world. NEKO CASE (w/ Jon Rauhouse and Kelly Hogan) - Hi Tone, Memphis TN Friday 4/13/07 My favorite album last year and favorite club show this year. Can't wait til next year. THE WAR - Documentary by Ken Burns 16+ hours of WW2 through the eyes of 4 American towns. TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS - Documentary DVD by Peter Bogdonovich (Director's Cut) 4 hr. documentary on an American treasure. A reminder of how great he's always been. WILCO - Austin City Limits Taping , Austin TX 9/15/07 As fine as their new album is, they're even better live.
  9. NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND TO BE JOINED BY POCO AND JIM MESSINA FOR PARTY IN THE DIRT TOUR PARTY IN THE DIRT TOUR to Hit the Road in 2008 with Exclusive Booking Representation by AGENCY FOR PERFORMING ARTS (APA) Nashville, TN – 2007 marked the historic 40th Anniversary of the Grammy award-winning NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, and the fun has only begun! The band that is known world-wide for "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," and their #1 hits "Fishin' In The Dark," and "Baby's Got A Hold On Me," will be taking these hits and some close friends on tour in 2008 to 'Party In The Dirt'. Joining the NGDB, will be POCO and JIM MESSINA. In 2008, POCO will be sharing a common celebration as the members of NGDB once did, marking their own 40th Anniversary as a band. Today POCO consists of Rusty Young, playing an impressive array of stringed instruments including mandolin, and Paul Cotton with longtime bassist/singer Jack Sundrud, and drummer George Lawrence. Their set consists mostly of material from the 1970s, including hits such as "Crazy Love," and "Heart of the Night." Young and Cotton also throw in a few of their own numbers from the early Epic Records era. Jim Messina formed POCO after serving as the recording engineer, producer, and eventually bass player for Buffalo Springfield. He played lead guitar and supplied vocals and some songwriting to the band. After recording two albums, Messina met Kenny Loggins, where they united in the duo Loggins and Messina releasing a number of popular albums. After a 29-year spilt, they reconnected and decided to hit the road as a duo again touring nation-wide.
  10. You'll definitely have to check it out sometime. Patty Hurst Shifter will be at the Pour House on 1-18, that may be one you'd find well worth attending. I just picked up their new EP Friday night at Chris & Marc's (of PHS) acoustic show at Slim's but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Jack Ketner (of Scearce & Ketner) recently did an editorial cartoon that ran in the Tideland News depicting Emerald Isle's oceanfront as being full of condos except for Bogue Inlet Pier, the date was set somewhere in the not too distant future. If you had a chance to pick it up I hope you're enjoying it. I hope y'all had a very nice weekend as well. Mine was very busy and I even ended up staying one more night just to see the VibeKillers do a late night show at Slim's on Sunday. I'm gettin' too old for this shit.
  11. Very good but I found it a bit hard to follow at times since I'm not so up on Dylan's personal life. Then again, there's a lot of moments of pure fiction. It's definitely worth viewing for it's unique approach to Dylan's many different personas over the years.
  12. He has an album out called Chrome Dreams II and is presently on tour. The long awaited archives are due for release (again) next year.
  13. A thin one in some cases but I'd say music where the subject matter is killing your mother and the vocalist sounds like someone is strangling a cat in a blender would be a good couple of deciding factors.
  14. Not "all at once" but from over the weekend.
  15. Needham's Neighbor Friday, December 7th Sadlack's Heroes Raleigh, NC Chris & Marc Smith of Patty Hurst Shifter Friday, December 7th Slim's Downtown Distillery Raleigh, NC The Backsliders w/ Jeffery Dean Foster and the Birds of Prey Friday, December 7th Pour House Music Hall Raleigh, NC The ViBeKiLLeRs Sunday, December 9th Slim's Downtown Distillery Raleigh, NC
  16. That isn't what I meant. Everything you list in this thread has a YouTube link.
  17. I was never too big on their first big hit, Popular but they got me hook, line and sinker with The Weight Is A Gift a couple years ago. Can't wait for their new album in 2008. I hate I've also missed them live the last couple of times they were through here (NC). Maybe next year.
  18. Cool to see the Gore Gore Girls mentioned here. I wasn't in attendance but they just opened a show for Southern Culture on the Skids in Carrboro, NC over the weekend.
  19. Funny you should say that as he made a very similar observation that garnered a lot of press either this year or last. It may be true to a degree but I don't believe it's true across the board. The worst offenders are those discs that claimed to be "remastered" but all that's been done is cranking up the original volume a notch or two in the studio while no actual remastering has even taken place. Otherwise the sound quality of CDs themselves has come a long since their infancy when many were nothing more than cheaply done recordings of the original vinyl just to get them on the market. Nowadays compact discs a lot come closer to capturing the sound of the original recordings than ever before. That was one of the reasons Neil Young has held up his long awaited box set for so very long, the limitations of modern sound technology. That he has it prepared for release in the new year (maybe) is a good sign that even Neil has found a sound he's happy with.
  20. I've mentioned the Four Horsemen before but it was one of your recent posts that reminded me of them. Definitely a group well worth looking into.
  21. I'm just stating an opinion as to why some of those bands have become so hated and none of it has to do with actual talent (or lack thereof), it usually boils down to listener burnout thanks to Classic Rock radio. It's kinda the same case as "hair metal", I don't recall any of those bands being so hated back in their heyday but once some years were put between then and now, perspectives changed. I was never a big fan of any of them to start with but there's no denying their presence as they were all over the radio back then.
  22. The post Berry songs always came off much better live. I think this is another thing that finally dawned on them. Thus, the return to a more stripped down approach to the songs and the Dublin rehearsals.
  23. I love the last few albums. That's the funny thing, there's no usually no shortage of Dylan fans on "classic rock" oriented boards like this but some aren't even aware that he's still recording. I've been a Dylan fan since the mid-70s but never got into him bigtime until The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 and Time Out of Mind.
  24. http://countryhound.com/News/Article.aspx?...CookieSupport=1 Loretta Lynn is reportedly in the recording studio working on a new album. Loretta, 72, has been writing songs with British rocker Elvis Costello and alt-country singer-songwriter Todd Snider, but also plans to include some of her well-known hits for the project. The album is being produced by John Carter Cash, the son of Johnny Cash and June Carter. No release date has been set.
