This is not just your opinion. It is fact. Jimmy in 1998 is in no way even comparable to Jimmy at the o2.

The o2 was very much calculated and planned. His soloing was just good enough to get by (well, for the most part).

1998 Jimmy was getting back to what he was all about in Zeppelin - those bursts of supreme virtuoso greatness, spontaneously mixed in while he completely holds down the fort. Totally loose and focused.

The o2 was Jimmy doing what needed to be done to get the point across. But technically on more solo breaks than not, he simply wasn't hitting on what he was trying to do when he wasn't playing it safe.

And here alone lies the reason I cringe when people today say "they should have one more go at it" or a one-off reunion performance "for the 50th." The o2 was 11 years ago and Page just barely got by. How do you think it would go today?? We would likely be displeased.

100% agree with this. I didn't see the concert live and I know being there is a whole different thing than watching it in the movie theatre or a DVD but I wasn't blown away. I think you said it well that Page did what needed to, but it was very calculated and didn't let loose.

It'll never be what we think of Zep because Bonzo isn't there and that band was the success of all four parts. That and the fact that time has moved them on. Jonesy seems happy doing his opera and working with very eclectic bands. Robert is doing his thing and Page is focused on reissues.

Agreed, this bag looks pretty shitty, but he did not carry it without a cause.

On his way home from the Awards  he took a rest in a lovely park, opened his bag & took out the cigarette-papers and some.........

And you know how it is.....

BTW, do you know if he lives in the north of London, he mentions Camden Town quite often.

He used to have a house in Primrose Hill though I think he primarily resides in the Midlands.

Reposting this picture as it seems to have not posted correctly originally:

Robert Plant. John Paul Jones. Led Zeppelin #monochrome

    Agreed

Page has said many nice things about RP over the years. He has fully acknowledged how important RP was to the entire thing. Also FWIW JPJ once said Stairway to Heaven is beautifully sung, so that's something. While not singling out Plant by name he has spoken at length about how great they were and how each member of the band was on top of their game. If my memory serves me the 2003 interview on youtube would support this.

I've not heard any of that but it's good to know.

Plant has over the last 30 years become steadily more sniffy about Zeppelin

and his two former bandmates .He hides behind these tongue in cheek remarks

but what grates is he never talks of them or the band that made him in complimentary terms

The parking the car comment which started this thread is one of many small disrespects

that don't forget, led to JPJ commenting publicly about "my friends finally remembered my phone number"

So he clearly did take it to heart.  Sorry to be so po faced .You see humour i see bad manners

Too much of it in the world  these days .

He;s said many nice things about Zep, Page and Jones over the years. I've not heard Page or Jones say anything about Robert complimentary though. I think you are reading too into his comments - his sense of humor is what it is and often pulled out to deflect having yet more discussions on Zep when he's being interviewed based on a new release.

Agreed Strider and couldn't believe it when I heard this in the a.m.  I loved both No Reservations and Parts Unknown.  I've probably seen every episode of both as I love the culinary and cultural aspects of the various places he visited. I subscribe to his shows on Netflix.  Such a loss and will be missed so much.  Just wondering why he had to chose this way out?  This is getting a lot of coverage today being a big personality for CNN and the food world and his influence in food circles.

I don't think it was a matter of he "had" to choose suicide. For those suffering from depression, sometimes the pain runs so deep they don't see any other way to get peace then to end their life. It's a horrific place to be in for those who have it and those around them. I don't know what it will take or how many more lives have to be lost before more research is put into finding a way to treat it.

Um......, his talent HAD gone unnoticed until Jimmy got a hold of him. In at least one of the many books and articles  Ive read about Zep over the years plant was talking about being on a road construction crew and wondering if her should give up on his singing career since he just couldn't seem to make it.  Fortunately he didnt, but the FACT is we had a struggling singer that due to Jimmy Page got the lead role in the greatest group in rock and roll. Its called gratitude, if someone helped me achieve my goal in life I certainly would keep it in mind.

I know he was working hard to get more exposure and all, and the great fortune was having Jimmy see him and bring him into the mix. My point was more that he doesn't OWE Jimmy anything. Jimmy didn't "make" him. Robert had a huge amount of natural talent and that blended and worked amazing with Jimmy and of course John Paul and Bonzo. He has been very kind in his words to Jimmy over the years, particularly in the early days when Jimmy was more active with his own solo career. I can't say I've ever heard Jimmy say anything about Robert's music, regardless, Robert has shown gratitude for being a part of Zep, but that ended in 1980 and he made a choice to leave the memories and the music there and carry forward.

Exactly! In fact, wasn't plant thinking about throwing in the towel before Jimmy contacted him? That is why when others say that plant owes us nothing (regarding a reunion) I say perhaps not us , but he CERTAINLY owes Jimmy a thing or two. In my mind (its sometimes a strange place😎) plant would have been nothing without Jimmy.

Why does he owe Jimmy anything? He was just as valuable a member of making Zep a success as ALL OF THEM. His talent would not have gone unnoticed if Jimmy hadn't gone to see him.

  8. Jimmy goes without saying, especially as he was already well known. I think John Paul Jones would have been successful as a musician, even if it was more of a niche fan base. Way too much talent not to be. Robert's voice was too amazing that had Jimmy not gotten him, someone would have and I think he'd have been well known. Bonzo it would have depended on where he ended up - not a reflection of his talent but just being much less known at the time. Though I would imagine Robert would have wanted to bring him on board where he would have been, like he did with Zep.

Now there's logic in that Steve....but depends if Robert is 'not up to much'  in 2019 & if the 'Capricorns' still have enough left in the tank to do it. Would be nice of Robert to repay his dues.....

Robert doesn't owe anyone anything, and neither does Jimmy or John Paul. They are free to do as they choose and it's not up to us to demand what WE want for THEIR lives.

Plant loves laughing at his own jokes. The real reason LZ will never perform together again is that Percy's lemons lost their octave register long ago and he can't sing the songs anymore. His churlish disregard for the band and legions of fans who never got to see them live is annoying at best.

Totally disagree. His sense of humor can come across as he's dissing the band but it's more to ward off constant questions about his past when he's rooted in the present, especially when promoting a new album. He's very proud of his work with Zep and I don't get any sense of negative feelings about it from him at all. I think when Bonzo died and they ended their time together, the only way for him to carry on was to start with a clean slate and put the past aside. He wasn't ever going to be the level he was with Zep but I think he was fine with that and just decided to experiment and in the spirit of Zep, push the creative envelope. Didn't always work but it didn't always work with Zep either.

It's a huge albatross for people who achieve that level of stardom to try to start a new chapter for whatever the reasons are and we can't really understand the pressure and all they must feel. As far as it being annoying not to have seen them, well it's a bummer for sure, but if you saw them now, it wouldn't be Zep because Bonzo isn't there. Jason is a good drummer but he's not his dad and I'm not talking about talent per say but how he approached his playing, writing songs etc. Jason couldn't be that which is fine as he should be his own person, but if they did get back together (and think of the criticisms from the 02 show), people would complain about that too.

I have no idea who the other new chap is. But my source is very solid- even encountered the gentleman after the rehearsal/recording. I truly believe this is real but no idea what product is.  Also plausible that RP nixes the entire idea if it doesn't " feel right"  (as he has many times before). I can tell you though that they did play and apparently JP and RP were at the BCC show

Your source unnamed and no pics or concrete proof - how do you expect us to believe you?

The mix was really bad at first, which made it sound weird and the fantasy sequences were alright for me at first, then I started to perceive them as amateurish and B type movie thing, now I really like them, they are more about the message then the quality of execution. And Bonzo and Jonesy really get on a few times, Page is great and who says the singer has to sing that high right ta the beginning. It's good.

Yes! It was capturing a moment in time. Although a bit cheesy perhaps, I like them as they represent bits about each of the four of them aside from being musicians.

Thanks for giving me some hope!  I guess it is possible but I saw or heard somewhere that he was thinking of retiring...? From touring and such... Does anyone know more ?

What I need to do is to go to that pub! I'll just stake it out! LOL. Can u imagine being able to have a drink with Robert?

He's been working on a new album with SSS so I don't think retirement is in the near future. He seems to have too much passion for music to give it up but I could see him touring less or maybe not recording anymore down the line.

bcarter! How do you know so much about the background details !? It's awesome!!! Thank You!

I have a question you or someone else may know the answer to: what year did Robert end the marriage with  Maureen and when was his son Logan born?

Logan was born in January 1979 and I believe his marriage was dissolved in 1982

"any time now" You tease Robert. Maybe it'll be an acoustic set, Battle of Evermore to include special guest Alison Krauss for the Sandy Denny part?

He's been recording a new record with SSS - I would assume that's what he's referring to :)

I freely admit I was initially quite skeptical, and I felt that "masking" the identities of his band mates until the eleventh hour was a bit silly (although I understood it). That said, I came to accept everything/everyone at face value as a unique, limited engagement tribute to John Bonham. However, what was originally billed as and intended to last for no more than 35 to 40 dates is now well into it's seventh year of production. On the positive side, JBLZE is still worth every penny of one's entertainment dollar. However, on the negative side, as I said, I would have preferred Jason Bonham become the cornerstone of a new band (not Black Country Communion) performing original material.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I would agree with you, particularly about him doing his own material.

I have a different opinion. The success and critical acclaim of The Disregard of Timekeeping (1989) and subsequent tour proved beyond any doubt Jason Bonham is/was fully accepted by the public as a fine drummer in his own right. It's Jason who has chosen to lean heavily on his connection to Led Zeppelin, and his father in particular, through the years.

What do you think of his whole JB Led Zep tour he's been doing?

Some of it was pretty good, once you get past the Tall Cool Devo riff. There was too much other great stuff happening back then to pay Robert much mind. He's been playing Zep for decades now, just not with the guys who wrote the music, which is just sad.

Meanwhile, Jimmy's giving us the full BBC sessions,  a slew of Led Zeppelin construction pieces with each reissue, and the Soundtracks box with all of its soundscapes no one had heard before. He's doing exactly what some Zep heads want him to do, and I appreciate it.  He issued a new album of covers yesterday that he produced in 1961 for Chris Farlowe -- 1961 !!! It's a cool piece of history and sounds great. How people slag him for not playing with people like Dave Grohl or rehashing Devo riffs, for example, is beyond me. I don't need him to be anybody or do anything he doesn't feel like doing, and he's already given us a lifetime of the best rock ever made, and more of his genius than we have a right to.

I don't expect anything from any of them. It's a little sad Jimmy hasn't done anything new and keeps "promising" he's working on stuff but he owes us nothing. Jimmy did a whole tour of Zep stuff with the Black Crowns. That's fine - it's his music as it is Robert's and John Paul's so again, I've no problem with any of the including it in their own shows.
