The Latest on a copyright lawsuit over Led Zeppelin's song "Stairway to Heaven" (all times local):

    12:45 p.m.

A jury has been selected for the trial of a copyright lawsuit over the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway to Heaven."

The suit being heard in federal court in Los Angeles claims the tune's famous riff was copied from the song "Taurus" by the band Spirit.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant were in court Tuesday as the jury was picked.

Testimony is expected to begin in the afternoon.

    10:25 a.m.

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant are in a federal courtroom in Los Angeles on Tuesday for trial in a copyright lawsuit over their song "Stairway to Heaven."

First, the court will pick a jury to decide whether the members of Led Zeppelin ripped off the song's famous riff.

Page and Plant are named as defendants in the lawsuit brought by the trustee of late guitarist Randy Wolfe from the band Spirit. Attorneys for the trustee say 1971's "Stairway to Heaven" copies music from the Spirit song "Taurus," which Wolfe wrote in either 1966 or 1967.

Led Zeppelin and Spirit performed at some concerts and festivals around the same time, but not on the same stage.

A judge has ruled that evidence made a circumstantial case that Led Zeppelin may have heard "Taurus" before writing their song.

Generations of aspiring guitarists have tried to copy the riff from Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."

Starting Tuesday, a Los Angeles court will try to decide whether the members of Led Zeppelin themselves ripped off that riff.

The band's guitarist Jimmy Page and singer Robert Plant are named as defendants in the lawsuit brought by the trustee of late guitarist Randy Wolfe from the band Spirit. Attorneys for the trustee contend that 1971's "Stairway to Heaven" copies music from the Spirit song "Taurus," which Wolfe wrote in either 1966 or 1967.

Led Zeppelin and Spirit performed at some concerts and festivals around the same time, but not on the same stage.

A judge ruled in April that evidence presented in hearings made a circumstantial case that Led Zeppelin may have heard "Taurus" performed before writing their song and sent the case to trial.

He's coming off as evasive regarding his knowledge of/familiarity with Spirit's music, as has Plant (re. his presence at a Spirit concert).  An American jury is not going to look very favorably on this, hence it's bad for their case.  It doesn't matter that it's a very common chord progression, that something similar was written by Davey Graham in the 50's (has Page ever referred to Graham as an influence for STH?), etc.  The jury is going to hear very similar-sounding parts of two songs, see that the guys who came later are acting like they have something to hide, and there you go.

Needless to say, the outcome of this case is not going to affect my love of Zep in any way, but overall Page has taken a lose-lose situation and made it worse.  I understand the perspective that of all their songs he had to stand firm on this one, but he really should have thought harder about just how strong his case really was.

You're making some wrong assumptions. For example, there's court documents you can find online where Jimmy states in his own declaration; "Before 1968, I also was familiar with other songs that included a descending line, such as songs by the Beatles and Cry  Me a River by Davey Graham."

All the new remasters are sourced from the original analogue mixdown master tapes - including Presence - and both Jimmy Page and John Davis have said there was no new remixing on any of the albums, so I'm assuming/presuming the extended 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' is the original version... in fact, I seem to remember reading somewhere that Jimmy admitted to there being a manufacturing error back in the day that cut out the original fade-in and was thus restored years later.

Could be mistaken, I'm sure someone will set me straight if I am.

That guy on Youtube complaining about the new remastered II  in comparison to the Classic Records release is a vinyl snob; there's a sect of them out there that believes anything digitized is automatically inferior to it's initial analogue equivalent.  I'll take the new remasters over any previous releases, including first presses, they sound spectacular... but that's just me.

The new vinyl releases sound fantastic.

The mans word is gospel because 1) while watching Robert, Robert never looked bored, 2) his
friend used the bathroom a lot that night,  3) he can describe the layout of the club -
therefore it must mean Jimmy and Robert stole the intro to Stairway.
     Whatever Francis...

Was Robert Plant that  big of a rockstar in '70 that somebody would've been paying attention
to his body language and facial expressions at a small gig 45+ years ago and remembering? If
this was even a couple years later in the 70s when Zeppelin became H U G E,  I could see someone
'watching'  Robert.  And do people not ever 'fake' having a good time? Or maybe he looked like that
because he had a good buzz going on.
B)I'm sure the guy is being honest per se, but the testimony
sounds a bit silly. What happens if somebody can also 'prove' being there, yet says they remember
    Robert Plant looking bored ZZzzz?

All of a sudden, this new "witness" pops up. lol. Seems so shady. Good points KellyGirl.
