Highly unlikely Peter Grant would have permitted filming of the performance.

Why is that? I know he was against TV broadcasts of the band, but would he have been against the show being filmed for archival purposes or a later release of some sort?

The review of the October 5th show in Amsterdam mentions “TV cameras where everywhere...”. Perhaps is it this one you’re thinking of?

ir perhaps he was mistaken from the June, Paris TV appearance we have.

Speaking of the Paris June 1969 TV performance. In the Timeline review here it states more is available like the beginning of Dazed.  I wonder why that wasn’t used for “DVD” unless the complete version was discovered later?

Nope, definitely remember it being the 10/10 Olympia performance; I wouldn't confuse the two. I hadn't heard about the possible Amsterdam footage though, but I'll keep looking for that source I mentioned.

It may have been a case of them confusing film with an audio tape, which happened with Montreux '70.

Oh no this source was talking about the actual audio recording after it had come out, and then mentioned a possible hoarded film as well. I'll keep trying to track down this source though, it's incredibly irritating to remember reading this but not be able to find where I had seen it.

  4. A while ago, I had come across someone/some article or interview that mentioned the existence of an actual film for the Olympia 1969 show. I believe the rumor had some French critic in possession of the film. Unfortunately I can't find that source and it's driving me nuts! I was wondering if anyone else had heard this or has any more information about it?

For a proper How The East Was Won you may wait until SBs of 923 & 924 pop up. But yes, a Best of Osaka seems to come into reach.

That'd be a wild dream come true if the 923/924 boards also came out. For now at least, we know that there's enough material from 928/929 to put together a compilation, especially when we finally get WLL/TY from 929.

Cool upload! How can we get the rest? Someone will have to a How Japan Was Won.

I've been thinking to do it since I heard about the 928 board a few months ago. I may wait until we get the final reel of 929 so I can put everything together in this level of quality instead of using any of the old 929 stage source.

Yes, this is good reading. Thanks for the suggestion.

What I'm looking for is a more technical discussion of what the heck happened between the first release of HTWWW and the 2018 remaster. The 2018 remaster rocks - the original sounds to me - well, I don't want to put into print what I thought of it - but I do want to know what JP did to make this version much more "alive" than the original. How did JP achieve a richer sound this time? New sources, new technology, new ears?

    Thanks!

So from the limited knowledge I have from working on music myself, I think the biggest difference here was the fact that it wasn't compressed to high heaven and brickwalled to the point that actual musical frequencies were being lopped off because the recording was so loud. There's no difference in the sources, it's still the master transfer that was used in 2003. Technology may have come further but I don't think there's been anything groundbreaking in terms of improving the sound here.

I think the real difference was in not over-compressing the whole thing. This way everything has room to "breathe" if you will. The best example to my ears is Jones's bass being far more distinct on the remaster, versus the muddiness of the original at times. I can pick out what his part far more easily than on the 2003 version. And just in general, the new remaster is so much more clear and crisp.

Why would the band have better material out there on bootleg, than they officially release?

It does not make sense, they should catch up in the marketing world already.

At this point I'm not sure they care all that much unfortunately. They couldn't even be bothered to fix the mess of the TSRTS reissue or to include Tangerine/Communication Breakdown/Thank You on the HTWWW reissue (there wouldn't even be any outside royalty issues there), so a whole new release seems out of the question. At least at this point.

While on the topic of these additional soundboards that haven't surfaced; wasn't Blueberry Hill actually slated for release at some point? If memory serves, I recall hearing a tale that EVSD had announced a release (perhaps not officially), but pulled back when someone did something that pissed them off?

Another thing to ponder: is this the earliest soundboard recording that EVSD would've unearthed? We basically have the confirmation that it exists, so what else is there from this era that EVSD could have access to? As far as I'm aware, any Bill Graham venue Zeppelin played at would have a soundboard, but did any other promoters from their early days go through that type of hassle? Even if they didn't, who knows how many people working the sound at shows could've taped 'em without telling others. It's a fascinating thing to think about.

With any luck, hopefully there's more soundboard pre '75 that they could be sitting on (ahem... NINETEEN SEVENTY TWO!).

I wonder if all the '75 shows we're sitting around waiting to hear (Long Beach, Philadelphia, Houston 2/27) are definitely in their possession. We know their source of the '75 shows is clearly a reliable one considering the amount of releases, but whether they have the whole tour or not is an interesting thing to wonder.

Does anyone know the earliest date of 1975 we have a SBD from? IIRC, we've received nothing from January, which is a shame because I think it's a rather interesting period. The band is clearly rusty as all hell, but the setlists were very unique and it'd be nice to see how the other performances of Levee sounded. It can be presumed that Levee was played at least 4 times, possibly 5, and we only have 2 of these. The two we have aren't exactly beautiful, but who knows, perhaps in Bloomington or their second night in Chicago, they really knocked it out of the park. Or we'd just get an upgrade from the other 2.

Lots of this is speculation but it's what keeps my fandom alive.

I've definitely heard the Blueberry Hill board rumors floating around, actually heard that same exact story about EV getting mad and pulling it. Quite unfortunate, but hopefully the rumors are based in reality?

The earliest '75 show on the boards that we have is 2/10 in Landover. Would definitely be awesome to get some of the earlier ones though, I love those early setlists with Wanton Song, Levee and HMMT!

Speaking of, I really wish I could dig up the source for you, but I've heard rumors that EV are sitting on the full Long Beach '72 board tape as well. Obviously we have a significant part of this on HTWWW but getting the FULL show as a board would be absolutely amazing. At any rate, it'd be quite the upgrade over the audience source we have for it now.

With the spottiness of the 9/29 SBD, I wonder if they purchased it with only that part of WLL available, or if they're sitting on much of the show. Same goes for this release, really.

See that's the weird thing about the 929 board though...the cuts are so oddly placed. They have songs from all three tape reels that the band would have used to record the show. It seems odd that the sections between songs would just happen to be missing. As well as select songs from IN BETWEEN others, like Black Dog not being there, or Thank You being missing from between Communication Breakdown and Rock and Roll. It makes me suspicious that they have these songs but held them back for whatever reason.

With that said, I could be wrong, maybe EVSD actually put out all the stuff they had for 929 (except for WLL). I keep remembering hearing somewhere that they were gonna put out Whole Lotta Love as another single after Immigrant Song and Friends had come out. But that didn't happen. And here we are a year and change later with Twist and Shout from that Whole Lotta Love. So, who knows?

I tend to think they were honest about the 928 release though. I'm not sure why the beginning is missing but it seems like we have (mostly) the first two reels with no cuts. I'm not sure if they couldn't buy the third reel with Whole Lotta Love and the rest of the show or what exactly happened there. As of now it really seems like they don't have it and they gave us whatever they were able to find.

I’d like to know if the Twist & Shout is from the same soundboard of 929 that was release last year.  The same source tape

Yes, it is from the new SBD. Confirmed over at RO a couple days ago. So EV at least has that part of Whole Lotta Love from 929...

Great sound? Which boot do you refer to? I have got the Moonchild version which sounds terrible to my ears.

Ah I misspoke, it's just good sound! Not necessarily great, I went back to listen and realized I had remembered it as better than it actually was. That said, I have the EVSD and Godfather versions and those seem better.

I understand that 929 was purchased by empress valley incompletely. the tapes were offered to all Japanese manufacturers, one of them told me that it was a very high price for an incomplete show. I knew this before EVSD announced that I was going out and did not say it was incomplete.

Really? The cuts are so oddly placed, between songs, and then also songs that should be in the middle of reels are missing. So I wonder if whoever actually was offering to sell the tapes cut some parts out themselves?

  14. 1 hour ago, Sticks of Fire said:

Great to know what we all suspected.  The entire show must exist.  Hopefully the final reel of 928 will surface one day as well

For sure! I figured EV had all of 929, there's no way they'd have Communication Breakdown and Rock & Roll without Whole Lotta Love and Thank You, those all would have been on the last tape reel. So irritating that they couldn't have just put the whole thing out. It would be great to get the ending reel for 928 as well, even though I do actually think EV put out everything they had for the show this time.

    Any updates?

It's definitely shipped and being delivered, I know of a couple people who got their sets yesterday. Can confirm from one of these people that "Twist & Shout" is indeed from the new soundboard tape!

MSG is an INCREDIBLE show, too bad for the sound. Love san bernardino

Right? It's a shame it isn't in better quality, what a ridiculous setlist and performance. Wasn't sure if you were looking more for sound quality or quality of the performance itself though.
