  1. Hey, LP54! Get ready for a lifetime of lunacy!! You'll have a blast browsing the forum. Post any comments that come to mind even where a topic appears dormant for a while. There's no such thing as a dumb question. Welcome aboard the starship!

  2. In  the book The Man Who Led Zeppelin, there's a quote from JPJ. "When we played at the Pontiac Superbowl (sic) everyone said it was like playing a soundcheck in the dark. Presumably the crowd were having a good time but we couldn’t see them. Even the crush barriers were sixty feet away, so I never saw anybody. There was no vibe in the place and you begin to think, ‘What are we doing this for?’"

    There you go!

December 31 footage from the Led Zeppelin Pontiac April 30 1977 performance to be aired…

In 2022, I started to discuss with the two guys behind Speedy youtube channel. My goal was to have all Speedy films scanned properly, or at least the most interesting ones. After some very long discussions, they agreed to sent us the reels, one by one. We did the Genesis 76 one and the famous Pink Floyd Hamilton 75, and many more, all at our own expense. But the most interesting part was yet to come: the led zep films, and oh boy, there was a LOT.
This is where Ledzepfilm help came in, and his help was really precious, he did the sync on all the films, of course, but he also helped us A LOT on the financial part, as getting all these films scanned was … Incredibly expensive.
My first idea was to have Pontiac released for Christmas 2022, but we only obtained the films in 2023. So the Christmas release was postponed. But then again, for no real reasons, it was again postponed for a release after Christmas 2023. But now, the release date of Pontiac 77 is settled : 31 December 2023. Be ready !
Lots of work were done to the films, so they looks as good as possible and we all hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we did !
Please thanks the speedy’s guys, LZF and all the people who want to stay anonymous involved in this project.
And of course, thanks to the late Jim Kelly for all the incredible films he shots.

Evidently you'll wanna keep an eye on Speedy's Films YT channel. https://www.youtube.com/@speedysfilms/videos

Has anyone read Led Zeppelin IV, by Erik Davis? It is mentioned here: http://professorofpop.blogspot.com/2010/08/led-zeppelin-of-gods-and-ghosts-and.html

This Andrew Goodwin is also writing a book about Zeppelin.

Erik Davis's book is one in a series of books published by Continuum on specific classic rock/pop albums. I first read Hugh Wilcken's book on David Bowie's "Low" album. I liked it. Lots of detail and stories on the sessions, Bowie's influences and the lead-in to his "Berlin" period. Now having read Erik Davis's book and hindsight being 20/20, I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up it would be anywhere near as good as Wilcken's.

As we all know, there's simply not a lot of public commentary from inside the band or others who participated in the making of the fourth album - or much else concerning the band in general, to be honest - to expect a revealing, in-depth look at the writing/composing/recording process. Yea, there's the stuff that's common knowledge, i.e. Rock and Roll arose out of Keep-a-Knockin; JPJ brought the unique time signature on Black Dog which the others struggled with for a time; Jimmy brought the structure of Stairway to which Robert added the lyrics at the studio; Bonzo literally recorded Four Sticks with two sticks in each hand; hanging mics down a stairwell to achieve the drum effect on When the Levee Breaks, etc.

OK fine. But the book wouldn't be much more than a pamphlet were it not chock full of Davis's endless attempts to interpret Robert's lyrics and draw inferences on the mystical, occult-based influences on Jimmy's music and sensibility. One person's perception based on extensive listening - not a criticism; hey who of us could count how many times we've listened to it? - but bolstered by not much more than the legends around the band that have grown like fish stories (wink, wink). Even Davis himself admits on top that he was into the band as a young person but reached the point where he wouldn't have cared if he'd not heard Stairway again.

Led Zeppelin IV by Erik Davis highly un-recommended.

  5. Been reading Stevie Nicks' biography (I know, I know, Stephen Davis 😏). Didn't know her band - it was Waddy Wachtel's idea - covered Rock and Roll.

As an aside, Davis also wrote that Buckingham-Nicks covered Zeppelin's Heartbreaker in their early days. Yes, they did a song called Heartbreaker but nothing to do with Zeppelin's. A modicum of research would've revealed this. Stephen, Stephen smh.

  6. We know each other fairly well round here and don't typically take offense. A wide range of personalities. What I'll say is we might take note when we're in this particular section of the forum, i.e. "Newbies." Perhaps a bit of consideration and patience for our new visitors. 🙂
