A thorough analysis of Celtic Occult practices. Some of the rituals and their purposes make you shake your head. Others I found quite interesting esp. since Plant was supposedly reading this book before he wrote STH.

The Irish file or Druid bard discovered auspices by the practice of what was known as the Teimn Laegha or the "Analysis of Song". He composed verses and sang them over any person or object respecting which he sought information.

I read this last year--a classic! I had no idea Robert read it as well. Not really surprising though.

I just got Henry VIII and the Art of Majesty: Tapestries at the Tudor Court and The Age of Chivalry: Art in Plantagenet England 1200-1400. Both very good.

  2. Deborah Harkness's John Dee's Conversations with Angels, which is very well done. On a bit of a Dee binge at present--quite an intriguing fellow.

Also just got a great V&A exhibit book, Gothic: Art for England 1400-1547.

  3. From Tokyo today:

It's not fair to regular guys that at 64, this man still makes me melt.

These are really lovely! There are quite a few on gettyimages.com also. He looks fantastic!

  4. Christopher Lehrich's The Occult Mind: Magic in Theory and Practice and John Michell's New View Over Atlantis. Both interesting, Michell especially so.

Also, finally finishing Kate Mosse's Sepulchre. Fun, but not nearly as well done as Labyrinth.

  5. Actually, he bought the house the first time from Michael Caine for £500.000 not £900.000 ( despite what the press reported).

Also, he sold it again a few years ago.....the Old Mill House is NOT the house he sold within the last year.

Yeah, the one sold last year was quite a large country estate (in Sussex maybe? I didn't pay enough attention at the time) as far as one could tell from what someone posted on the old board when it came on the market.

  6. I dig the silver fox look and all (especially with the ultra-cool Ray Bans), but am suddenly missing the dark locks. Perhaps they shall return someday...

Definitely. An amazing album imho. George's considerable talents finally get full expression here.

I've always loved The Beatles (first two albums I ever owned, aged three, were the second album and Sgt. Pepper's), but I wouldn't ever compare them to Zeppelin--they really are very different kinds of bands.

  8. I saw The Golden Compass. Wasn't as shite as I thought it would be, what with all the bad reviews. They left all the religious parts in, which made me happy. I was afraid they'd dumbed it down for "general audiences," but they didn't. Still makes a more lasting impression in book form, but that's not surprising. All the actors were good - that kid with the funny name who played the main character really surprised me - she seemed really natural. Loved Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel, and Nicole Kidman was a pretty good Mrs. Coulter. I wish Daniel Craig could have been in the movie more, but unfortunately that's just how the story is. Sam Elliott was awesome; couldn't have found a more perfect fit. In a nutshell, I thought it made a nice little visual companion to the books, but it didn't eclipse them or anything.

I saw this in London last week--it was great, but I couldn't believe they ended it before the actual end of the first novel! My sister and I thought the projector guy wanted to knock off early or something and just cut the last scene, but apparently not! It'll really be a bummer if they don't make the next two films now.

I also saw Elizabeth: The Golden Age the next day (cool litle cinema just a few blocks from our hotel), which I enjoyed quite a bit as well. It wasn't as good as the first Blanchett Elizabeth film--a bit static for the first hour--but Clive Owen was great and the last several scenes with the Armada sinking and all were really well done.

On the plane home, I saw Stardust, which was really cute, and also The Invasion (which I watched mostly for the Daniel Craig bits and was reasonably well-rewarded for the effort *smirk*).
