Highly likely Catherine James, author of Dandelion.....

According to her own book, "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay," (pg. 299), Pamela attended the Led Zeppelin at the Whisky:

    http://books.google.com/books?id=pJaU7NnAL...mela+des+barres

As I mentioned in a prior post, her entry of April 28, 1969 is wrong because Led Zeppelin only played the Whisky in January. She even mentions Page collapsing at the end of the set and being carried off by roadies (Page had the flu at the January 1969 Whisky shows). The girl in the photo might be Pamela if you believe that she attended the Zeppelin show at the Whisky, as she has mentioned in the book.

You mentioned that the band went to San Francisco after Los Angeles, which places the gig in January, since they played San Francisco before the L.A. area in April/May 1969. Also, if Jimmy and Pamela's relationship started at the Hyatt House, it started in West Hollywood on the Sunset Strip since that's where the hotel is located (not too far from the Whisky).

The entry you posted was from "who dated who":

http://www.whosdatedwho.com/celebrities/co...-jimmy-page.htm. It says that Page stayed at Catherine's house the first TWO nights after Led Zeppelin's debut. Then it says that Page & Pamela's relationship started at the Hyatt House after the band went up to San Francisco. That could possibly be interpreted that he spent the third (or even fourth) night in L.A. at the Hyatt House with Pamela, and went up to San Francisco later. After all, he did have a few days between the 1/5/69 LA show and the 1/9/69 SF shows.

Here's a link to other pictures of the Whisky shows that Norwood Price took:

  2. Rodney was never an owner of the Whisky.

I asked about that a while back and Jimmy's recollection was that the Jan. 3rd show was not played.

Rodney was the emcee at the Whisky. Elmer Valentine was one of the co-owners that I had confused Rodney with.

I wouldn't doubt if the 1/3/69 Whisky show was not played. It would really be pretty ridiculous for Robert to say they only played one of the 3 or 4 shows, if they played all four! (I guess it's ridiculous anyway since it seems they played three of the four nights).

  3. Very impressive presentation. I'm inclined to agree with you on all points. All that's left

to do here is further substantiate a Led Zeppelin concert at the Ice Palace in Las Vegas

on 7/31/69. I intend to contact Rodney Bingenheimer to see what, if anything, he can add to Michael Chain's recollections about this gig. If Rodney went he may well have saved the stub as he has quite a collection of music memrobilia.

Since Rodney was the owner of the Whisky, I wonder if he could also shed some definitive light on exactly how many sets/days the band played at the Whisky in January 1969. Even Robert and Jimmy contradict one another. Jimmy said they played all four nights (1/2-1/5/69), but had to do one long set each night. In a 1976 Circus magazine Plant said they played "one gig out of the three we were supposed to have played." The year before at the 3/12/75 show Robert stated that "we were supposed to do four gigs there and did one. Jimmy got, what was it?"

Needless to say, Jimmy's recollection makes the most sense since we have a recording of the 1/5/69 show and Robert mentions the gig the prior evening. Also, photos for ages were attributed to the 1/2/69 show. As for the 1/3/69 show? They probably played it, but one can never know.

Who knows, maybe the girl in the audience in this picture is the infamous Pamela herself (it certainly looks like it could be her):

    whisky69-d.jpg

Also, not that this would preclude a show in Las Vegas on 7/31/69, but the band did perform TWO shows at the Terrace Ballroom in Salt Lake City on 7/30/69.

Actually, there are quite a few references to Zep in New Musical Express in August 1969. The documentation of the NME on that website does not nearly cover everything.

  5. Pamela DeBarres - I'm With The Band Page 152

    April 28, 1969 Entry - ........P.S. Big news....Led Zeppelin are arriving tomorrow...

    The next night my dear Mercy accompanied me to the Whiskey to see Led Zeppelin.................After this thrilling display we made our way to Thee Experience, Jimmy Page sat apart from it all, observing the scne as if he had imagined it;

I don't have Pamela's book, but I remember reading the 4/28/69 entry in the bookstore. She goes on to mention that Page was sick and that his shoe fell of like Cinderella's slipper, and that he had to be carried off the stage. It was obvious that she was actually referring to the January 1969 Whisky shows when Page was sick.

Since she was four months off on that recollection, I kind of take all of her recollections with a grain of salt.

Steve, I think you meant to say the band played Irvine on 5/1/69, not Pasadena. Either way, they're both in the L.A. area.

  6. Very interesting, as Bonzo recalled he had agreed to tour with Chris Farlowe following the end of the UK Tour with Tim Rose. Perhaps Chris Farlowe can (or already has) recalled Bonzo dropping out on very short notice, seeing as Zep's first rehearsal on Gerrard Street is believed by many to have been 8/12/68.

Hopefully Blocoboy can confirm or deny the 8/3/68 Tim Rose date listed in the old fanzine. Ironically enough, the August 3, 1968 Melody Maker stated that Tim Rose postponed his American tour from August to November.

  7. Blocoboy, AWESOME job digging up this stuff. Thanks for posting!

It looks like the 7/20/68 West Midlands College of Higher Education gig is incorrect, unless Steve can actually post the ad. Perhaps the gig was played on a different day, was unadvertised, or was the second gig they played on 7/20.

Here's the 1989 dissolution order of the West Midlands College of Higher Education (correct name). The college then became a part of the University of Wolverhampton:

Here's a photo of the teaching block at the college with some background info:

    http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/524296

It's pretty well known that the first time Page saw Bonzo was at the Country Club in Hampstead on 7/31/68 when he was playing with Tim Rose:

    rose1.jpg

I read in an old fanzine that Bonzo played with Tim Rose at "The Factory," a Birmingham nightclub on 8/3/68. Plant allegedly attended this show to convince Bonzo to join the "New Yardbirds." This certainly could have been Bonzo's last gig with Rose since he went down to Jimmy's Pangborne boathouse soon thereafter.

Blocoboy, have you seen an ad for this Birmingham 8/3/68 Tim Rose gig? Also, did you happen to see any press clippings in your archival search for the Zeppelin gigs played in the area (Mothers 3/22/69; Birmingham Town Hall 6/13/69 & 1/7/70; Kinetic Circus 11/17/71; Birmingham Odeon 12/16 & 12/17/72; The Belfry, Sutton Coldfield 3/20/71, Leicester University 11/25/71; and Coventry Locarno 12/9/71)?

  8. MikeZep61,

While hardly conclusive, I'll just mention in the official timeline a "Chris Meade" has left a comment pertaining to Manchester (11/16/68) and two comments have been made for

Sheffield (11/23/68), one of which references a ticket stub. The search for confirmation

    continues!

Without a post-show review it's always hard to nail down some of those early dates. However, if Jimmy did play with Jeff Beck in Miami on 11/15/68 it pretty much cancels out the next night's show in Manchester (especially with the time zone change working against him).

From what I understand, a bootleg exists of Jeff Beck's second night in Miami on 11/16/68. It's too bad a boot doesn't exist for the night before to see if Page did in fact jam with them. Then again, Chrome Oxide could have derived that information from the "Hammer of the Gods" book which is certainly a pretty unreliable source.

And, even ticket stubs can be an unreliable source, especially when it comes to bands postponing shows for one reason or another. Off the top of my head, I have three ticket stubs that have the wrong date on them (two postponed Rush shows and one postponed Queen show).

As you said, the search continues!

  9. Jeff's a nice guy but professionally he's always been a bit too flaky and unreliable to pose serious competition to anyone. The nerve of Jimmy Page to form a band with a singer, a bass player and a drummer!

Jimmy (w/The Yardbirds) had played Thee Image Club in Miami April 8-10 1968. He already knew they were breaking up in two months and was already considering putting a new band together. The fact he attended the Jeff Beck Group's gig in Miami, if in fact he did, is just a coincidence. He and Jeff were friends and did share the same manager: Peter Grant.

Edit: A review of The Jeff Beck Group's tour itinerary shows they did not even perform

in Miami until November 15 & 16 1968. Jimmy Page's aforementioned gigs in Miami were

his only visit there during his stint with The Yardbirds. He was on tour in England at the time JBG played Miami in Nov, having performed in Manchester on November 16 1968. I

don't know who the bigger liar is, Rod ("Jimmy ripped us off") or Ronnie ("Peter Grant

asked me to be Led Zeppelin's guitarist"). Too funny!

According to the Chrome Oxide website, Jimmy jammed with the Jeff Beck Group at Thee Image in Miami on 11/15/68. And, for what it's worth, and it may not be much, in Stephen Davis' "Hammer of the Gods," he also mentions Jimmy jamming with Jeff and Rod at Thee Image in Miami. Needless to say, if this jam did take place on 11/15/68, it pretty much nullifies the Manchester gig that Zeppelin allegedly played on 11/16/68 due to the logistics.

It is plausible that the Manchester gig was not played on that date. Especially when you consider that the band last played on 11/9/68 at the London Roundhouse and a fan claims the Sheffield University gig was played on 11/28/68, and not 11/23/68. That would mean the band did not play any other gigs between 11/10/68 through 11/27/68. Perhaps this period of time was when Page and Grant came to NY, met up with record company executives with Led Zeppelin I tapes in hand, and then took in a few Jeff Beck Group shows. I've never seen any definitive proof that the 11/16/68 Manchester gig was actually played on that date.
