  1. Knebby,

FWIW, anytime I see bogus Zep stuff on Ebay, I email the buyer to let them know what's up and that they can retract their bid should they so choose. I also email the seller and give him a fine written beating. Think Peter Grant in TSRTS. :buttsmack:

Makes me sick too. It happens mostly with fake concert posters and "signed" memorabilia.

I always find the copies of CODA signed by Bonzo to be the most amusing.

  2. Actually, I mentioned Peter and Jimmy met with George Hardie in an upstairs room at the Marquee the day of this gig. Jimmy showed him the famous photo of the airship

in flames and said it was the image he wanted on the front of the album cover. My

point is by mid-Oct '68 Jimmy intended to change the name, regardless of how they

were being billed by promoters. The mailer does prove at least one promoter billed

them as The New Yardbirds, and the poster proves a second promoter did as well.

Oh I am sure he had that intention. I cannot imagine them going on as New Yardbirds or a permutation thereof...I mean it'd be like the Spinal Tap scene... The Originals, the new Originals...

  3. Initially, I suspected this image was inadvertently reversed, but the hotel reception sign is clearly not reversed. So, unless they were clowning for the camera it's inexplicable

why they are all signing in left-handed. I will post pictures from my collection of them

signing autographs in an attempt to prove or disprove they wrote right or left handed.

Others are also encouraged to post any they may have. Here are two of Robert:

Actually, the sign is reversed.... it's a matter pf perspective...as we look at them was the sign ahead of or behind them... and a quick flip in photoshop... there even the man's overcoat buttons correctly now. ; )

    there all better...

  4. Soonafter, a penniless Plant was in London trying to get money from his manger when Reid saw him on Oxford street. Robert traveled with Terry up to Cambridge where Reid informed him of the opportunity to work with Page.

I have also read that Tony Secunda , former manager of Procol Harum & The Move gives himself credit for pointing Plant in Page's direction. Supposedly he had arranged for Plant to come to London to meet up with Denny Cordell based on Plant's BoJ demo disck. But that didn;t work put as Denny was nooked with Joe Cocker and Tony was ovewhelmed with Procol Harum & Move.

"Then says Tony, I remembered that the Yardies were rumored to be coming unglued. I didn't think much of their prvious vocalist anyways. To me he was weak, he had no stage presence, he had hunched shoulders and was losing his voice. The Yardbirds had lacked vocal balls and I figured they could use Robert, So I pointed him in that direction."

'Plant adds: I knew that the Yardbirds has done a lot of work in America - which to me meant audiences who did want to know what I had to offer. So naturally I was interested."

    - The LZ Biography Ritchie Yorke.

    fate ...

  5. The following is found on robertplant.com - click on Strange Sensations on the left and then on Robert Plant under the header More Articles:

"In 1966 Plant left home, left college, left work and turned professional. In 1967 he cut 6 sides for CBS, formed the Band of Joy with John Bonham and created two working partnerships, first with Terry Reid; the two became friends playing on the progressive music circuit of the mid-60’s; and secondly as harmonica player and co-vocalist on various Alexis Korner ventures..."

I've seen examples of the 2nd partnership... anything known of the 1st? I.e. anything tangible besides recollections? Did it even exist?

I'll help Steve out as he is obviously distraught over some simple math problems...

Plant did indeed cut 6 singles under his contract with CBS.

    Listen (CBS 1966)

You Better Run / Everybody's Gonna Say 202456

    Robert Plant (CBS 1967)

Our Song / Laughing Crying Laughing 202656

    Long Time Coming / I've Got A Secret 2858

As a matter of fact it was his CBS contract that kept his name from appearing on any song credits on Led Zeppelin.

All have been making rounds on various boot compilations for years and You Better Run and Our Song were released on RP's 66 To Timbuktu.

Here have a Listen heh heh!

  6. The orientation of the new stadium is the same as the old one.

"The field and track configurations remained the same. A replica of the original concrete arch bearing the name "Kezar Stadium" was built on the west side of the stadium as a tribute to the original structure."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kezar_Stadium

From San Francisco's Golden Gate Park by Chris Pollock and Erica Katz, ISBN 1558685456, page 44.

"27: Kezar Stadium and Kezar Pavillion. .... A monument to another era, when college football was still played in leather helmets, the design for the original stadium by Willis Polk was probably inspired by the historic Colosseum in Rome. Park Superintendent John McLaren insisted on one compromise in the stadium's orientation, however. Traditionally, the longest side would have been oriented in the north-south direction so the majority of patrons would not face into the sun. But the layout would have dramatically cut into the park's acerage, so the stadium was oriented east to west."

    Edited: additional reference.

    Well that settles that!

    :)

  7. No. Kezar Stadium is east-west orientation not north-south. Go to Google maps to confirm.

    Meg

I dunno Meg, that pic certainly makes it look like the sun's a coming or going and the shadows are either east west...and by my north/south I meant the end zones.

I would think open air stadiums would've been engineered so as NOT to have the sun rising or setting into the eyes of a team...at least you would think.

And how can you be google mapping it ? It ceased to exist in 1989.

  8. Looking thru this cool site:

    http://www.oldbuckeye.com/Houses_of_the_Holy/

and some of the venues in question...

    you got Braves Stadium

    Tampa...

    http://www.oldbuckeye.com/Houses_of_the_Ho...s/image196.html

    Kezar

    http://www.oldbuckeye.com/Houses_of_the_Ho...s/image177.html

    3 rivers

    http://www.oldbuckeye.com/Houses_of_the_Ho...s/image152.html

You would think Zep played end zone right ? Seems like Kezar can be crossed off as that's obviously a north south orientation...Seems like 3 rivers is as well.

Atlanta & Tampa not as much so. So.....

Can I be best man ? I'll settle for ring bearer. Even though I do see some obstacles to this union.

  9. Given the amount of sunlight on the stage and the position of the shadows, this could be a morning soundcheck at Kezar. The concert gates at Kezar opened at 11am and the band hit the stage in the late afternoon after The Tubes, Roy Harper and Lee Michaels performed. Weather reports indicate the day began clear and bright but became progressively cloudy, which explains why photos taken during the concert look slightly washed with no shadowing, as the position of the sun had changed, compared with the above photo. There would have been ample time for the band to change attire. That would be my guess.

    Meg

According to the concert file, the band arrived late, rushed to the stage and found the equiptment not working...Plant improved " We've only been awake a total of about 2 and a half hours.." Don't sound like they were ther early on for a soundcheck...hmmm or maybe that's why they were late ?

Can you possibly post the second pic and we could tie 'em together ?

  10. In 1992 John was the musical director for a one-hour showcase of technology and art titled 'Memory Palace' at the World Expo in Seville, Spain. It included 'Liquid Selves' by Karl Sims, an animation short produced by John Paul Jones and is available on the dvd

'Odyssey - The Mind's Eye Presents Computer Animation Experience' (ID0936ODDVD)

When I had the honor of speaking with Jonesy back in 2003, and of all things we were talking about our kids, I mentioned my daughter was a really big fan of the Wallace and Grommit series. Jonesy said his daughter was involved with those. I do not know in what aspect though.... time to go check out some credits....

  11. Well, if one wishes upon the star (tongue in cheek), it's a 6-sided star. Or two inverted pyramids. While many may jump on the star of David, the Mogen David, the Jewish star, it's also the star (or seal) of Solomon, the key to the Kabballah, which in turn anchors Crowley's mysticism. And around we go! :D

    Evvy baby, I thought you quit this forum...meanwhile I'm making T shirts like this . . .

    oh BOO!!!!!

    Dogs of Doom?!?!?!?!!!

  12. Your question actually ties in to a larger project I'm working on so I certainly haven't

forgotten. It's not so easy to give you the most accurate answer on demand. This

one is going to take more time and coordination to arrive at the truth.

Feel free to PM me for an update anytime.

Going out on a limb here, but according to a Peter GRant Interview in Dave Lewis' Celebration II, it would seem that the only contact Clifton had with Zep prior to being hired to fix the mess Massot left behind with TSRTS was when he had approached them once about doing a film and took Jimmy and Grant to a a viewing theater and showed them a bunch of clips of Hendrix that he shot. So it would seems if Clifton had shot footage of them in spring of 70 as you suggest it was not known to them. I mean, you'd think he'd have shown them clips of themselves in trying to cozy up for a job.

  13. That's the name I was trying to recall -- Dave Mattacks, but the other thing is the Death Wish II soundtrack was not released until well after Summer 1981. I should add I don't think Jimmy ever said he actually played guitar on any tracks outside of what may have been done for the Death Wish soundtrack so whatever record he put on perhaps he did so because he simply enjoyed it. I always thought if that was the case it may have been a Phil Collins solo album, which were quite popular.

According to an old issue of Yes magazine, Chris White & Alan Squire of Yes wrote and recorded about seven tracks for their Cinema project with Jimmy at his Sol Studio beginning on February 28th 1981. (Jimmy later used some of Squire's ideas for The Firm).

Bill Wyman did some recording at The Sol on March 7th 1981, sparking a "Page to Join

    The Rolling Stones" rumor (!).

It was reported that George Harrison and Mick Fleetwood recorded at The Sol on March 30th 1981.

It would seem the mystery continues...

    Rat Scabies!!! :D
