SteveAJones
Garden partin’ with arena memorabilia By DON KAPLAN NY Post November 7, 2011 Madison Square Garden is holding the garage sale of the century, and everything -- from lockers to a Ranger goal net to Led Zeppelin artwork -- must go. “Who wouldn’t want a Willis Reed plaque that hung in the tunnel where players walked out to the arena floor?” said Scott O’Neil, president of MSG Sports. Among the items set for sale are Knick and Ranger lockers, NBA basketball hoops, game-used NHL pucks and even a goal net from Game 7 of the Rangers’ historic 1994 Stanley Cup championship, which is expected to fetch thousands. It’s not clear which players’ lockers are up for auction. “This building is more than bricks and mortar; it’s made of memories,” O’Neil said. The items were removed during the first phase of an $850 million reconstruction of the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” Other items that will go to the highest bidder include Hall of Fame plaques for Knick Patrick Ewing and Rangers Ed Giacomin and Rod Gilbert, and artwork from the hallways commemorating concerts by The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, as well as their framed plaques and records. Also sold will be: * An entire basketball hoop and its stanchion. Its opening price is $1,500. * Boxing memorabilia from Muhammad Ali to Andrew Golata. Bidding on most of these items opens at $50. * Concert posters from such groups as Pearl Jam and The Who -- and even Lawrence Welk. Fans can place their bids at PieceOfTheGarden.com.
