And a lot of area jazz buffs will be spending it at the famous Newport Jazz Festival, July 3 through 6. They'll flock there, in company with thousands of other devotees from all over, to see and hear such greats as Woody Herman, Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan, who this year will share billing with some of the strangest-sounding names in music history. There'll be the Mothers of Invention, Sly and the Family Stone, Ten Years After and the Led Zeppelin, to list a few of the groups. The Fourth will be celebrated with an evening of Jazz-Rock. Other features will include a Sunday afternoon with James Brown. The fans will bring with them their own brand of excitement, generated when a small town becomes the center of operation's for a multitude of people in a festive mood. If you're unhappy because you'll miss it all, you have a second chance: the annual Folk Festival bows into Newport July 16-20, with just as much music and just as much mayhem.
