danelectro Posted February 3, 2009 Share Posted February 3, 2009 Both are great versions but I really dig Jimi's, especially the one he did at Monterey. It's like someone took Hubert Sumlin's licks and stuffed 'em in a nuclear bomb and dropped it on earth, it's loud electric blooze at it's best. I like the Zep version too but they don't really capture the vibe of that particular song. The closest they get is when Jimmy does the sliding 6ths bit in the solo, that is a pretty cool adaptation of Hubert's original lines. Though both versions are kind of mash up of blues tunes, Zep's nods to Robert Johnson and Hendrix tosses a bunch of stuff in his solo. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
