  1. LOVE Montauk! If you need a good day trip, park at field 5/6 at Robert Moses and walk the boardwalk to the historical light house. The boardwalk takes you through the dunes, great for observing the deer and other wildlife. The beach far in front of the lighthouse i think is nude (yikes), never saw it myself, but rumor has it.

back to topic, i must see "Pelham" as I was orginally from Pelham Bay!

K, will do...thanks, Misty! Love dunes, boardwalks & lighthouses!

Hey, if ya ever come to my neck of the woods, come see Coney Island before it's gone! It's an old-fashioned amusement park with fun, fun rides! The Cyclone rollercoaster is still operative. But, I'm sure you know all about good ol' Coney Island. Anyways, I've lived here in Brooklyn all my life, so I'm not the most objective person when it comes to Coney (where "we'll eat baloney") sorry, Gene Kelly fans. :P

  2. Hi fan_s  Song to a Seagull is a GREAT Joni album (she's one of my absolute favorites btw as is the album) and yes, I do love Judy's cover of Michael From Mountains equally. Such a gorgeous voice - well both of them. Hmm - can't think offhand of the film with Patricia Neal you are referring to. If it comes to me, I'll let you know but she's a great actress as an aside.

Thanks, ninelives. Did you see Neal in an old, old movie (of course! haha) The Fountainhead? with Gary Cooper?

  3. [re: Wildflowers LP, Judy Collins]

    Great album :)

Hi, ninelives! Judy, once again turns my head upside down! Pure poetry. Yes! Do you love her cover of "Michael From Mountains"? Joni did it in her debut album, Song To A Seagull. Sometimes, (depends on my mood) that's my favorite Joni album.

On Wildflowers, Judy is phemonenal--her arranger (Joshua Rifkin, I think) did a terrific job in complementing her voice. (lots of violas and cellos) Plus, she's a great songwriter in her OWN right, of course--think of "Sky Fell", "Since You Asked" and "Albatross". "Albatross" was on the soundtrack in an old movie--late 60s starring Patricia Neal (sorry can't recall what film). Do you know it? I tried googling it. Sorry, to no avail.

  4. Hey Fan S ! Well, you got me about those songs, I don't recall them off hand, so I'll have to do some digging - always fun looking for musical treasures! Thanks for the suggestion :toast:

Hi, Patrycja! I'm gonna send you to do some more digging. There's a rather lovely, evocative song by Cohen on Judy's Wildflowers album called "Priests". Do you recall it? It so unique because it has minimal triangles pinging. Of course the lyrics...well, superb! ;)

  5. hi Fan!!! yeah, dickens is so horrfied, he actually died again.

seaside is lovely this time of year, you should take a drive (or the MTA, its going your way).

    :P

Ha ha ha! Good one, Misty! Yeah, this summer, the husband wants to stay in Montauk for a few. Loves the open ocean. My daughter & I prefer the bay. heh heh chickens. We also like good ol' Seaside Heights in Jerz. We stayed "Down in Seaside" last summer. Very beautiful. Hey, you should come to Brooklyn some time! :)

Whoops, don't wanna derail the thread (no pun intended). To go to Montauk we might opt for the Long Island Railroad. But, then again, I might opt out of taking subways too far. Might be too scared: I plan to see The Taking of Pelham 1 2 & 3, speaking of movies. Saw the original--FANTASTIC! It had Robert Shaw in it. Sooo menacing. :o New one looks great too, with Travolta as the villain this time.

  6. could not have been worse than The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past with Mathew McConaghey. I was basically forced to go by friends (not the type of movie i would normally go to see). it was so horrific. I kept thinking, poor jennifer garner, poor thing was associated with this crappy film. i swear, at one point, they had a scene where it was raining condoms. it was atrocious. is there a negative star rating?

Hi Misty! How's the seaside in the G'island? :) Anyway, hey, re: that movie you just saw, The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, too bad it's so horrible. Poor Dickens must be spinning in his grave.

  7. Hi Fan S! it's quite all right. After all this time I can see how you can get the names mixed up - 'round' / 'circle' :P . Well, Roundabout is staging "Waiting for Godot" right now. Except for some of its absurdist language which dates it a bit, it's still a very current play. Not bad for a first published play ;) .

"Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful!" cheer up Estragon!

Hey Patrycja!! Thanks for the quick reply and understanding re: shape association, Anyways, Nathan Lane's in Waiting for Godot. He's a real hoot. Dja see him a long time ago in the movie The Birdcage? Funny stuff. :)

  8. Hi, Patrycja! Not that this is earth-shattering news, but just to self-correct something. I mentioned that I saw Al Pacino in Mamet's American Buffalo live in NYC at the Roundabout in the early 80s. It was actually in 1982, @ the Circle In The Square Theatre not the Roundabout. :o Sorry.

  9. Hi! Loved a lot of the ones everyone's mentioned but the one that's constantly on my mind is Annie Haslam of the Renaissance. Especially in the song "Carpet of the Sun". She has a clear, ringing voice and just nails that higher register effortlessly. :)

  10. I escaped to lunch at a new restaurant with an old, trusted friend, great food and pleasant company in a soothing, easygoing environment.

Hi, EL! Yes, it's truly wonderful to have some downtime and good laughs with an old trustworthy friend. :)

BTW (different thread, sorry! :o ) I liked what you said re: state of grace the other week. ;)

Hey thanks, Patrycja! Sounds truly awe inspiring! I highlighted my favorites from your set list. Do you remember on his first album (I think) a song called "Teacher"? It brings back memories, too.

Also, Judy Collins covered a song of his called "Dress Rehearsal Rag" on her album In My Life. Do you remember it? Well, here's to you...:toast:

  12. :friends:

Well that explains the sudden speaking in tongues  Did you happen to catch the price of the guitar, by the way? Wander in more often will ya!

Oh, and I can't believe I forgot to post this at the time, but the Leonard Cohen concert this past Tuesday was INCREDIBLE! Great musicians, surprisingly good sound (for a hockey arena), and best of all Leonard was in top form what with his witty banter and soulful voice for over three hours.

Hi, Patrycja! Did Leonard Cohen do a lovely, haunting song called Famous Blue Raincoat? I have it on his "Best of Leonard Cohen" CD. Good to hear that he's in tip top form. Sounds like you had a great time at the concert. I'm glad.
