Had to watch this again of the classic, foggy pull away shot.

Funny to think Sinatra was originally cast as Dirty Harry, they even filmed several scenes with him before he quit the role. Also, he could not hold the Model 29 Eastwood brandishes in the movie as it was too heavy for Sinatra.

Damn, old Blue Eye's as Sinatra...NAH.

RIP Nick Michaels, enjoyed his radio show "The Deep End with Nick Michaels."

Oh no! I did not know Nick passed. I also enjoyed his show and he seemed a genuinely nice guy.

Again I find it interesting you mention hearing Stevie Ray Vaughn like playing on no quarter as just like David gilmour he plays a stat and page is again using a strat on this song. So it seems the strat is inspiring page to experiment and change up his approach . As much as I love les pauls the may 17th and 18th no quarters make me wish he played a strat more in 75  and onwards.

He used the Strat on the 18th & 23rd, I did not know he used it on the 17th as well.

Going way back to plants remark about where John Paul Jones was, when plant replied "He's out parking the car". What was the catalyst for that? Why did he have such animosity towards JPJ? Was there a long simmering fued between them?  I mean, plant isn't exactly an idiot...he had to know it would get back to JPJ. I dont recall any friction between them during their heyday. Any ideas?

I am just speculating here but Robert was a midlands bloke with no formal musical training, Jones was a formally trained musician from London and very professional. Robert was Mr. Groupie & party while with Zep, Jones typically did not associate with the band after a gig but preferred his own circle of friends and stayed in rented houses or with friends while on the road (starting around the 73' tour I believe). I figure Robert believed Jones was being a snob when in fact Jones was the only one being smart. I believe it is as simple as that. Also, Robert is likely intimidated by Jones breath of knowledge regarding music and may have called Robert out a time or two when they were putting together songs in the studio.

Or maybe Jones made a stupid comment in 1971 and Robert never forgave him. Anything is possible with people.

You should have listened to the Empress Valley's "No Quarter" from their "Earl's Court: The Final Option" box set. The version you picked (assuming it's the 4CD "Complete Earls Court Arena Tapes II") unnecessarily switches between three different sources, and it's overly EQ'd. The Final Option version uses the best source (first released on the Immigrant label as Complete Earls Court Arena '75) as its main source. And it's been tastefully EQ'd to eliminate hiss. It's definitely the best audience tape from this Earls Court run, imho, and it does a good job at presenting this show in the best light possible.

Glad to hear you like NQ so much. This one is my personal favorite from 1975 actually.

This one and the version from the 23rd are the best versions of NQ IMO. Also, Page uses the Strat on both of these night's and does some very freaky stuff with the whammy bar (especially on the 23rd), but does not go overboard with it. That is one of my favorite aspects of Page's use of the whammy, he knows when to use it and how to use it but never over-uses it.

Heh...I thought I'd get grief for the 5 minutes ("What are we gonna do with the other, two minutes 37 seconds? Cuddle?)

Ha, you get it once a week (or I'm my case, once when Venus transits Uranus) 5 minutes is serious marathon shit right there!

Yes but one cannot, or should I say should not, get intimate with a dog. Therin lay the downside. That and I don't have to pick up my wife shit...I only have to take it :black_eye:

Well, his solos on the 1980 tour suck. His fingers are so sticky, it hurts me listening as a guitar player myself.

His rhythm work is ok, though.

Have you heard some of the boots from Rotterdam or Frankfurt? No sticky fingers there. The Rotterdam Heartbreaker is one of Page's best versions as just one example. Of course if you don't like it to each their own, I respect your opinion.

    Overrated: 1980 tour

I never understood why it gets some praise. Well, some performances are ok. However, from a guitar players POV the whole tour is just an awful display of professionalism, even by a R'n'R Band's standard.

Could not disagree more as there are plenty of good shows on that tour. In fact I would put 50% of those shows in the very good range where I would only place 1/3 of the 77' shows in the very good range but, as Paul said, to each their own.

Different folks and different strokes. To me because Jimmy sounds a bit meh it was a major disappointment when I first got hold of 27 April tapes in the 80’s. I’ve tried several times but can’t get into the concert as a whole.

I like the sound quality of the Houston show but Jimmy isn’t great. Jonesy rarely had a bad song let alone a bad gig, Bonzo rarely mucked up. Robert had struggles over the years but if Jimmy was off I have problems.

77 to me Jimmy was inconsistent within a gig let alone from gig to gig. Perhaps I need to change my way of listening to these concerts and create a highlights playlist of the songs I can listen to and enjoy.

I agree with you on this. As Zeppelin was a four piece, the instrumental section had to be tight, if ANY member of the instrumental section was off the whole show sounded like shit to me. This is why the only boots I find acceptable is when Jimmy, JPJ, & JB are all on point. There are plenty of 77' & 80' shows where this is the case (though in 80' Bonzo was reserved, he was not bad) so I don't complain.

The shows in 77' I gravitate toward are the MSG & the first three LA shows, plus the final Landover show as well. In 80' the first four shows are great as well as Frankfurt.

Any version of ten years gone in 1977... what is so hard about playing that solo...a piece that he wrote to boot!!.

whats with the 3 neck gimmick that never really made that much of a difference , to me that is.

    The beginning was never poweful

Bonzo was always a bit heavy handed in the live versions.

Percy was always great especially in the verse after the so called solo.

and Jimmy flubbing the solo night after night and if he did at least nail half of it , he gets too much credit especially from some threads on this site. It's his job to,play well. To rehearse. To nail it. To be a professional.

In this song he played like a ten year old with his first guitar.

There might be a version or two from LA and Copenhsgen but most suck.

Sorry, but I do not exactly agree. He nailed this song live about 1/3 of the time. Sure, that is pretty shitty that only one in three shows Jimmy played this song good but that is a far cry from two shows. He nails the shit outta this song on almost every MSG & LA show, Pontiac, and the final Landover date just to name a few. Though to be fair I do agree I just cannot understand why he consistently fucked up the first, easy solo 2/3 of the time???? He rarely had a problem with the second or outro solos which were far more complicated.

Now my contenders for most fucked up song live is a tie between Tempe 77' Achilles & July 23rd 79' Copenhagen MMH. I believe Jimmy got his dick caught in the strings on the latter.

Why is it that Carbon dating only goes back 25K years, and then afterwards it's pure hypothesis?

The radioactive isotopes in the carbon decay full after around 25K, after that it becomes guesswork as that is how carbon dating works. The determine the decay of the isotope and that determines the age plus or minus a century or so and depending if any events, natural or otherwise occurred to contaminate the isotope.

  13. Regarding the earlier civilizations, I was referring to the period only as far back as 25,000 years ago. We have seen through our own history how quickly humans can advance thus it is quite easy to have been at our current technological state at least four times and been destroyed. There is actually plenty of evidence re: the Giza Pyramid Complex, Puma Punku, etc. which show stonework done on extremely hard, brittle rock which could only be accomplished with advanced technology such as lasers. Plus, as mentioned earlier, geology does not lie. The Sphinx has been recently dated to around 12,000 - 10,000 bc with the absolute earliest construction period being 8,000bc due to erosion patterns. The Giza Pyramids were not built during the third dynasty as historical texts have always claimed and the most recent estimates place the date of construction at least 3,000 years earlier, or around 5,800 bc. Besides the famous Giza Pyramids, there are, I believe seven other pyramids of similar size and construction (but not exactly the same) which run along a line north to south. The real kick is geologists discovered the placement was not random as all these periods were built around the same time along the bank of the Nile where it would have existed from 8,000 - 6,000bc before it began to shift eastward.

Of course anything is possible, even people barely out of the stone age using advanced mathematics and building techniques is not impossible, however it is highly improbable. Plus, what are all pyramids built after the Giza and north-south longitude Nile Pyramids shitty ziggurat, smallish, poorly constructed crap? What, did the contractor take the techniques to the grave?

What I do not believe: Fake moon landings, chemtrails, the Illuminati, etc. That being said I do believe the world is controlled by corporations and oligarchs. Our governments are a sham.
