  1. I recently listened to Immigrant Song at the Bath Festival, and...can anyone decipher the lyrics that Plant is singing? I find it interesting how the lyrics are still being worked on here. I recognize a few of the lyrics that would become the standard lyrics for the song, but I can't make out other parts. The recording quality definitely doesn't help either. Apologies if this has been posted before (I did a quick search on the forum and couldn't find anything).

Yeah, the first LP.....good.....then crap and more crap..and selling out to 80's girly rock scene.

I agree. Their first couple of albums were very good and better than anything they put out with Perry (although Journey with Steve Perry is a guilty pleasure of mine). It's a shame they changed their style to get more sales. Their early stuff was intense:

They did try to go back into prog one last time with Perry. It's a shame they just went back to pop rock:

Meanwhile, I have a couple questions. Listening to the "Eddie" boot from 5-21, I hear Jimmy tease the opening lick of Heartbreaker's solo right before  he launches into Nobody's Fault But Mine. So, I think he either (a) knew he wanted to play Heartbreaker that night, (b) heard someone yelling for it early in the show. Indeed, somebody yells "Heartbreaker" right before he plays it in the final leg of the concert. Seconds before that Jimmy begins to tune his theremin obviously getting ready to go into the noise solo. But after Heartbreaker is requested he changes his mind and following a few seconds' hesitation launches into that instead. Any memory of how that unfolded or what Jimmy's reaction to the song request was like (if you could even see any of it unfold)?

Also, who yells "Trampled Underfoot" when, in Robert's words, they "change the program" on 6-23? Was it Bonzo? Thanks!

I wasn't at the show, but I have a theory re Heartbreaker: Page may have played the opening lick of the solo in order to test his guitar. His guitar strap came loose at the beginning of Sick Again (hence the brief dropout) and there's a long wait before NFBM, so he probably had to ensure it was tuned to his liking. As to him actually playing Heartbreaker, it wasn't the first time playing it for 77 (they played it during one of the MSG shows earlier in the month). He could have decided to play it as it was their first night in LA (being their "home away from home"). Or it could have been in response to that guy shouting for it on the bootleg. As Strider said, only Page knows for sure.

As for "Trampled Underfoot", I believe it is indeed Bonzo. The Year of Led Zeppelin blog also credits it to Bonzo, so I'd say it's a fairly safe bet.

  4. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I've always found Priest's 70s material (up to and including Stained Class) to be far superior to anything they've put out since. Not that they didn't have some good songs afterward, but most of their 80s stuff was more about "rocking out" and "partying" as opposed to being complex or dark. It's catchy but it doesn't require a whole lot of thought. Songs like Epitaph, Heroes End, or Sinner are way more interesting both lyrically and musically than, say, Breaking the Law, imo.

Anyways, I digress. Here's a song that has one of my favorite vocal performances ever:

  5. My dad's friend made a CD of some of his personal favorite Zeppelin songs and let me borrow it. It had all their famous stuff (Black Dog, Stairway, etc.) and I became a sort of casual fan. Then, on a whim, I purchased the Led Zeppelin DVD. From the first notes at Royal Albert Hall, I was blown away! I then got HTWWW, along with all the studio albums and eventually moved on to bootlegs (my first one was LTTE). The rest, as they say, is history.
