All of those so called "relics" are fake.  In the middle ages there was competition between all of the European cities with cathedrals to have "the best relics". The cities/cathedrals with the best stuff drew the most pilgrims.... and with them money offerings (indulgences to cancel sins) and the money was used to build up the cathedrals and line the pockets of the church.  Cathedrals in the middle ages were the first forms of tourist destinations--- virtual amusement parks for religious pilgrims.  Any modern inquiry into the authenticity and provenance of these "relics" always seems to indicate they were faked. The shroud of Turin comes to mind.

But that all being said, these building have significant architectural and artistic value even if they are somewhat silly to assume any "Godly significance". Venerating a building, or venerating an object in a building to many Christians is considered another form of idolatry. I'm not making any claim against the religion involved here, just the authenticity of the so called "relics" which are pretty much considered to be pure mythology.

Good post Kip. Around the 13th century no fewer than four churches laid claim to the skull of John the Baptist. In merry old England, half the English churches in the middle ages claimed to have the remains of Joseph of Aramathea.

Damn these saints got around more after they died then they ever did alive.

Well, to be fair the Byzantines had been collaborating with Saladan and pissing off Rome.

Saladin had been dead for a decade when the Fourth Crusade began, plus, the sacking of Constantinople had nothing to do with Saladin or anyone else, it was about money. The Fourth Crusader Army, which had just sacked Zara, and was excommunicated as a result by Pope Innocent III, were pretty much screwed when the son of the deposed ruler of Constantinople came a calling. The crusader army camped out at Constantinople just hanging out and getting paid for nothing for about a year when the ruler was deposed and the money cut off. The crusader army then sacked Constantinople as they did to Zara.

So to recap, we have a christian crusader army, supposed to re-take Jerusalem instead sacking Zara for money and then Constantinople, and getting excommunicated in the process. Saladin...are you serious? Oh wait, its always the brown guys fault, bonus points if muslim.

Listening to the news reports and some reporters say the dumbest things. One reporter on CNN said (paraphrasing here), "the cathedral has survived two world wars, the French revolution and the Crusades...".

How uninformed are some of these news people? How would the crusades have been a threat to this cathedral? Do they not know that the crusades were a defensive war against attacks from outside of Europe?  And in terms of WW2 France surrendered, declared Paris an 'open city' so the Germans would not have had any reason to threaten this non military target during German occupation, and the Allies never attacked Paris either. Only bombing by Germany occurred after Paris was liberated and there was not widespread damage anyway.

I guess some news people don't understand that Paris during WW2 had it easy compared to London, Stalingrad, or Berlin.

Well, to be fair, there was the Fourth Crusade so anything was possible.

It  is  hard  for  me  to  believe  that  they  made  all  these  recordings  with  incorrect  bias. I  mean, all  of  them? It  can't  be  that. The  "quick  and  dirty  transfer"  scenario  fits  better  in  my  opinion.

It may be hard to believe but anything was possible on the 77' tour. Everyone in that circus was pissed to the gills 24/7. The band, management, and road crew. The fact they played so many damn fine shows that tour is testament to their combined constitutions. The very fact the tour did not crash and burn by the end of the 1st leg is just amazing.

Knowing how messed up the road crew was I am surprised we don't have Captain & Tennille spliced in.

  5. I get stage fright off and on, just as mentioned before, no rhyme or reason, it just hits. I have been performing in front of audiences since I was 4 in a Christmas Pageant. That first time was easy, no stage fright, I loved it. Then in church when I was 9 speaking in front of the congregation on several occasions...no problem. It was not until I began performing music live in 6th grade that the nerves would set in on occasion. Typically if I had to solo (second chair, trumpet). Anyway, it was never consistent once I was playing in rock bands, it would just happen on occasion. Of course a few tokes off the magic weed pipe took care of that right quick, but maybe Jimmy did not like weed so used booze instead which can really affect your playing. Weed only affected my playing positively as it calmed me down and allowed me to settle in to a groove, a pocket with everyone else instead of thinking, "argh, I think I am outta time...shit, did I just miss the beat? Crap, I muted a note!!!"

Robert's dental issues had nothing to do with Bonzo socking him one, or two times. Plant had horrible teeth, damn nasty as hell. Had them all taken care of during the 1974 band hiatus if memory serves. Since the 75' tour he has sported a lovely grille, absolutely perfect chompers.

Every single bit of this is equivalent to a high school talent show.

I would say 50 / 50 between that and one of those pre-teen "beauty pageants" where it is obvious the whole design is hyper sexualization.

The "music" is bad enough but the exploitation of these kids, plus the obvious intent to make the girls in particular look as young as humanly possible while also overtly sexualizing them is just nasty. It would be one thing if the girls / women in these groups looked their age, its a whole different thing to put something together akin to a dirty old man's fantasy.

Just to be clear, I feel the same when they pull this crap in the west. The whole Miley Cyrus act a few years back was disgusting.

Again, a step above Hentai, just barely.

My favorite Zeppelin album!  Panned (as usual) by the critics, the local guy said it sounded "like Bonham forgot how to play drums". WTF?

    But yeah, turn Jimmy up!

Talk about crazy, Bonham does some of his best playing on that album, it is a virtual musicians workshop with all members at their technical best, excluding Plant, not that he is bad, I like his delivery but this is a players album. Bonham plays the whole range, from rock, to jazz, to latin, to New Orleans swing beats. A simply incredible feat of musicianship at its finest without becoming too pretentious. ALS is accessible prog rock at its best, catchy and interesting throughout and not overstaying its welcome.

Who is to say?  Well that's easy, in a free market people get paid according to the value of their work and competition for their skills. Which is why a worker at McDonalds doesn't deserve $15 dollars per hour--- unless of course you can't find a million people willing to work for that amount and then the MARKET drives the price of that labor up.

Sorry, but nobody "deserves" anything---not even their next breath if it means someone else has to pay for it.

No offense Peace Frog, I really like you, but the notion of "deserves" sounds like how a two year old would look at the world; that they demand and deserve---and are more important than the needs of anyone else around them.  But yes we do care for two year olds--- or anyone else old or you who cannot care for themselves. But for able bodied adults we owe them noting, especially not what they ought to be able to achieve on their own for themselves.  Because as soon as you attached "deserves" onto something, then all I hear is you saying that someone else deserves less, be they the owner of the business or the shareholders who have invested into a enterprise.

Do you subscribe to socialism, or is it more of a charity thing to want to give to others from the pockets of people?

Your argument is undermined by the inequities inherent in any society, its basic human behavior. You cannot say "achieve on their own" when the playing field is considerably different depending on the circumstance of birth. According to recent stats, a person born into poverty only has a 6% chance of making it into the middle class. Is that because they are lazy, stupid, apathetic? Nope, its because the wealthy and powerful have stacked the deck against any and all not within their social sphere. Only regulation can level an uneven playing field, the question is not whether regulation is necessary, its who is doing the regulating.

People like you feel compelled to politicize everything. It's the K-pop Thread ya fucking dumbass. If you don't like Mexican food, don't go to Taco Bell.  As a by the way, not a single artist presented thus far is under 18. Further, K-pop in Japan is NOT akin to blackface and minstrel shows. Hey, I might know, seeing as I live here.  With that, I leave you to disintegrate further into your preconceived notions of middle-age.

    J.Y. Park  Still Alive

Strange, as I hear middle age men making that same defense all the time. Good luck with that.

  10. Give me a break, putting this crap on a Zep site is akin to hawking kippers in an ice cream parlour. Of course anyone older than 18 who likes such groups is telling unto itself. Sorry, but as a 50 year old man I have zero interest in no talent pre-pubescent tarts. Unless the women have been around the block a few times and are over 35 forget it. As an aside, K-Pop in Japan is akin to blackface & minstrel shows in 1920's America. The Japanese HATE the Koreans to the point that generational Koreans who have lived in Japan for multiple generations still cannot hold Japanese citizenship even though they were born there.

So, to break it down, K-Pop belongs on either a K-Pop site or on some Korean teen forum. :smack:

When a restaurant adds a 18% gratuity I call the manager over and as why he would want to limit the tip to 18%?   Most places that do that do so because there is a tendency with some African-American and Hispanic people to not leave a tip.  Some restaurants are now adding a 3% "living wage" FEE to the bill as well; I always make them remove that.

Food servers are NOT underpaid where they are receiving minimum wage. The idea is that their income should mostly be from tips which they need to work to earn. $15-20 minimum wage laws are SILLY and only end up with places laying off more people or cutting their hours. Many jobs are not supposed to be careers, and forcing companies to more than the job skills deserve is just plain socialism.

Bottom line is that nobody is forced to take any job, if they don't like they can quit. I have no sympathy for people who believe that they can pay their rent and other expenses working at McDonanlds and then demand more money for being a retard. Life doesn't work that way.

Who is anyone to say what jobs are most important or the people working certain jobs are either greater or less than? As long as the work is honest, regardless of job, it is just as important and the person just as valuable as any other job. No one is better than another and no one should be referred to as "retarded" if they are working an honest job. Of course certain jobs should demand greater pay due to skill involved but EVERYONE deserves a living wage, everyone.

Tipping is one of the hallmarks of a healthy capitalist system but tips need to be earned.

In Europe they have the tips built into the meal/service, just another form of socialism where even the losers are rewarded at the same level as the winners.

and both practices are wrong. I tip 20% for average service in restaurants and bars, 30+% for excellent service and similar to Strider in my favorite bars. Why? Because our system is 100% certifiable bullshit that these hard working people are getting the shaft by their employers. Nobody supplements my employees pay, why should I supplement anyone else?

The only right way is servers should be paid between $15 - $20 an hour by the employer. I tended bar through college and the markup on food and liquor is LUDICROUS! The reason why so many restaurants and bars fail is not through lack of profit, it is due to the nature of most people who open such establishments are irresponsible with their money. My aunt & uncle owned restaurants for years and made so much cash it was insane. I asked my uncle why they succeeded when so many others failed and his answer surprised me. He told me when you own a restaurant / bar you or someone you trust must be there 100% of the time when open and you have to treat it as a business, not a social event.

So when these jackasses who own these business try to claim their expenses are too high they are 100% lying their asses off. They could easily pay staff $20 an hour and still make serious bank. When a wholesale bottle of Jack costs $17 and they sell it for $6 an ounce...do the math. Or how about a nice steak dinner with all the sides and desert? Cost for that baby is about $3 wholesale yet the punters pay $50+ unless you go to some shitty buffet.

Tipping IS anti-American however I will continue to do so (for waitstaff) as long as their greedy employers keep screwing them over.

edit: I guess socialism is pretty popular in America and has been for decades because just about every restaurant will include a 15 - 20% gratuity in the check for parties of 6 or greater. Has been that way since the 70's.

  13. Every time I have seen Jimmy play live, April 10th 77', March 1985, October 1988, 95' & 98' he has been excellent and pretty much spot on. All performances were different but all excellent. Out of those I would place his playing from late 95' - 99' as his best, post Zep playing as he was truly in the stratosphere during those 5 years as a player.

I may also be the exception here but I prefer Jimmy's #3 Norlan LP to his #1 & #2 59' LP's. IMO the tone of that Norlan and the way he plays it outshines the 59's but that is just my opinion FWIW.

Robert slapped Jimmy across the face backstage before the show that night. There were very few bystanders so you won't find much about it on public forums and nothing in the press.

Too bad this happened in 95' instead of 2015, then we would have had it on video, been on the news cycle for a week, and have every late night host goofing on it, including slow-mo footage with sound effects.

Though I can imagine old Robert slapping Jimmy upside the guliver and exclaiming, "Jesus Christ mate, get yer shite together, your 51 not 21 ya silly twat. Next time I will replace your ass with Buckethead you drunkie bastard!"

  15. I still can't figure out why people left MySpace for Facebook. The algorithms MySpace used were light years ahead of Facebook which has always looked and functioned like shit. MySpace had better usability, better features, did not have spam-bots, and to my knowledge, did not sell user data.

When Facebook first came out I thought this will go nowhere, looks like shit, functions like shit, and MySpace made Facebook look like the 18th century version of a real crappy MySpace.

Anyway, I never had a problem on MySpace, Facebook is a cluster f***.

    Facebook sucks

Personally, I don't understand all the fuss. I never had a problem getting down with the sweet lovin when the red river starts to flow, I just felt immensely blessed that a woman would even allow me the opportunity to access the honey pot in the first place.

  17. I hate cell phones, worst invention ever. Turned 8 hour employees into 24/7 employees yet pay is still the same. People are on them while driving, shopping, eating, etc. Just crazy.

I have an iPhone X plus but it is provided by my work, I don't own a cell phone personally. When the day comes my employer no longer provides this evil device I will go out and get a goddamned Jitterbug or some similar shit. Only will need it to send and receive calls and maybe an occasional text. I use a REAL computer for everything else as I don't have ambition to go either blind or nearsighted due to browsing on such a small screen.

BTW, did I mention I hate cell phones?

  18. It was the 70's, no one knew there would be amateur recordings of almost every show in shitty to good quality. Typically speaking if someone made a mistake or had a crap show no one cared as the audience was so F'ed up they likely would not have noticed anyway. Band arguments back then typically were not about show quality as compared to simple personality conflicts, money issues, etc. As the boys all got on relatively well and they were making a shit ton of loot, what was there to argue about?

Of course today you really cannot get away with a sub-par performance due to social media etc. but in 77'...hell yes, no worries there.

My Critique of the bonus photos in the 2-CD package. And please, if you don't care one way or the other about these photos, just pass this post by....

    The Booklet:

Page 3 has the classic picture of the band before the LA premiere of TSRTS. For the most part, I am disappointed with the photos chosen, considering the amount of photos taken in 1977. The RP on p.4 has his arm rising, hiding his face. Bonzo on p.5 with a baseball cap on. Really?? The best and classic pictures of Bonzo from the '77 tour were with the bowler hat on. Jimmy, on p.5 - what the hell is this revisionist photo?? The hat has been airbrushed. Here's the original as posted on Jimmy's site:

    1977_04-07_OnThisDay_LedZeppelin_Chicago

But even with the original photo, the classic photos of Jimmy from the '77 tour are with the white dragon suit.

    P. 6-7 - Seem blurry and color altered. Like this is what I was wanting.

    P. 10-11-12-13 - Just more of the sometimes out of focus and color treatments I don't like. How about one of Jimmy playing the bow in the green laser pyramid...

The CD sleeve - Why is the live picture so grainy? Does Bob Gruen take anything but grainy pictures??

The Pennie Smith one from the rehearsals is rare, but it also appears grainy and out of focus.

Bowler hat? I don't recall Bonzo ever wearing a bowler hat on the 77' tour. I thought he only wore the bowler hat on the 75' tour??? If memory serves Bonzo wore the fishing hat off and on but that is the only hat I recall him wearing in 77'. Then there was the weird druid clown outfit he wore at Oakland but that was the exception.

BTW can't blame you for linking the white dragon suit with Jimmy in 77' as that was his classic look for that tour. However, I hate that stupid suit. White was the LAST color Jimmy should have worn in 77' as he was so pale and it just exemplified his emaciated state. The stormtrooper gear he wore in Chicago was different and funky. TBH I never liked the glam rock costumes jimmy wore from 73' - 77' but that's just my preference.
