  2. Yes. His loss was also such a big loss to the record industry and anyone who knew him, knew of his work and his passion for music. He gave artists the opportunity to develop and took chances that most wouldn't or will not.

Nowadays, if an artist that's signed to a major label, doesn't instantly sell millions in the first or possibly second record, they are dropped (and left holding the bill to pay back the loan). If that mentality took place in the 70s, 80s or even in the early 90s, artists/bands like U2, Def Leppard, John Mellencamp, Bryan Adams, Tom Petty, KISS, Journey, Metallica, RUSH, etc... would have never have been around to make or release albums like, The Joshua Tree ("With or Without You", "Where The Streets Have No Name", etc..), Hysteria ("Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Love Bites", "Women", "Animal", "Rock It", "Hysteria") , American Fool ("Jack & Dianne", "Hurts So Good"), Reckless ("Heaven", Summer of '69", "Run To You"), Full Moon Fever ("I Won't Back Down", "Free Fallin"), Destroyer ("Beth, "Detroit Rock City", "Shout It Out Loud"), Escape ("Don't Stop Believing", "Open Arms"), The Black Album ("Enter Sandman", "One", Wherever I May Roam"), Moving Pictures ("Tom Sawyer, "Red Barchetta", "Limelight"), etc... which sold/sell multi-millions (as most of these albums were the artists/band's 4th or later albums).

There will never be another Ahmet.

  3. I don't know anything about how much actual footage there is of Ahmet available, but in the movie "Ray" (Ray Charles), Ahmet is depicted prominently by a great actor and I'd assume he fairly accurately depicts him. Jamie Fox did so well as Ray, and Charles was "overseeing" the production so I'm sure Ahmet's part was equally acted competently.

I recommend checking out this movie for a bit of Ahmet's early business techniques. He was generous, humorous and so music savvy. He was at ground zero in the development of Rock and Roll and Ray Charles was one of the pioneers as well, often overlooked in this regard.

Curtis Armstrong portrayed Ahmet in the 2004 Feature film, Ray (starring Jamie Foxx).

He's a character actor. In the 80s he played in Revenge of the Nerds, was on Moonlighting (TV series) and in recent years moved in to more serious roles (Ray) while continuing to do tv and film roles.

Music Trivia: He went to the same college as musician, Marshall Crenshaw (who portrayed Buddy Holly in the 1986 movie, La Bamba (about Richie Valens).

  4. ... and I'm thankful that the 3 surviving members as well as Jason agreed to perform upon his/his wife's wishes. I'm also thankful that other Atlantic label artists were able to perform (Foreigner, etc..) at his Tribute. I do hope the DVD will have a very fitting tribute section to Ahmet.

Additionally, I do recommend the "Atlantic: House That Ahmet Built" DVD to any/all.

It really gives insight to him as a person with his friends and other musicians of all ages, genres, attitudes, styles, etc..

  5. After reading through 20+ pages related to the O2 Concert, I felt "Led" to pay respects to the man who brought us Led Zeppelin and so so many others, Ahmet Ertegun.

Next week, he would have turned 85.

Thank you, Ahmet!!! May you rest peacefully. :)

  6. Don't know, but, does anyone have an explanation for why he has such great taste in art and such funny taste in trousers? (Well, circa this photo...) ;)

More seriously, there are several photos that seem to be part of this shoot... maybe someone can identify or locate the interview/article they ended up in?

Back in those days, pretty much everyone had funny taste in clothes. Remember leisure suits, bellbottoms, butterfly collared shirts, etc...? :)

Maybe Page was into the whole Loch Ness thing (and wanted to look the part)??? :D

  7. Her name was Carolyn Helman or Heldman... She was quite the looker (but didn't get much on air time). I had a few friends that worked for MTV back in it's original days (when they were actually a cool/alternative station and played "music"). Nowadays, it's a complete joke (and most of their sister stations for that fact, too). VH1 plays the same stuff, too. VH1 Classic plays some videos and concerts (so, it's the last of it's kind).

She was among the first new VJs hired around 1987 with Adam Curray (poser/original Headbangers ball host) and Julie Brown (english one not the Red Head comedienne) (after the first 5 who started in August, 1981: Mark Goodman, Nina Blackwood, JJ Jackson, Alan Hunter and Martha Quinn).

I met Jason this afternoon and I got him to sign one of my favourite photos of him. I tried to post this with the others I've done in my thread in the pre/post - Zeppelin forum but it wouldn't work so here it is :D

Did you get to show Jason your necklace? :)

  9. Considering Led Zeppelin were not a "singles" band, they did/have done very well to be # 30 in England (where 99.9% of the others listed were/are singles bands. Perhaps, the big reason Led Zeppelin were not as

"big" in England was for this very reason.

I'm glad they focused on playing/touring around the world. They proved they were/are the biggest band of them all (regardless of what critics, singles formatted radio and singles buyers thought/think).

What's amazing is the fact that they weren't a singles band and focused mainly on their albums (but many songs on their albums were never played live when they were a band--- example: In Through the Outdoor and Presence have quite a few songs on them that have never been played live as well as songs like "Houses of the Holy" from Physical Grafitti (originally recorded during the Houses sessions).

Radio still can't ignore them as there's a classic rock station in every major city in every country around the world somewhere playing Zeppelin at this very moment... :)

Additionally, there's some teenager out there who is just learning about and rockin' out to Zeppelin (sharing the experience with their friends).

Great Rock N Roll Will Never Die!!!

  10. Also, One has to be careful as well about buying fake collectibles...

There's tons on the internet, at record shows and elsewhere...

There's a guy out of Virginia that sold/ possibly still sells scans of tour books, laminates, passes, etc that are all reproductions... (and tries to pass them off as legit at record shows)... There's also a few places that sell overpriced repros on the West Coast...
