  1. I too am a giant Jimi fan, can't believe it took this long to stumble upon this thread. Hey does anyone know of a similar-type forum for Hendrix? I can't find anywhere to discuss Jimi and I'd love to find a place like this where I could talk about all things Hendrix. Thanks!

  2. Jimi flew to Toronto on December 7th for the trial. He was cleared of all charges on Dec. 10. My detailed Jimi diary does have a blank spot for a few weeks in Oct., so not certain of his activities. But I tend to believe Jimmy's tale. I do wonder if Jimi was at all affected by the massive airplay Zep were getting then, if he maybe even caught a Zep gig at the Fillmore E or Central Park...I'd think he'd be curious. But maybe not. Those drug charges hanging over him, no band, dark days for Jimi then. To catch him all wasted at a club isn't much of a stretch...

  3. There are many theories as to what it is and why it exists. Personally, I believe it to be simple two-track soundboard recording of the mix that was being fed to the venue PA.

I'm of the opinion the recorder was possibly on an amp right behind/next to the drums, the way the cymbals are so hot and Bonzo's grunting. Are there any good photos from this gig we can examine?

  4. I distinctly recall an interview with Plant right around the Coverdale / Page era and when the interviewer compared the two and Robert just bristled and said something like " Oh no, I was never that bad, all that preening, Good Lord.."

And Evester, I too was there at the Cal Jam in '74, "Burn" fucking smoked. Glen Hughes is bad ass. So is Ian Paice for that matter

  5. PhotonBeam over at RO said that every show was recorded, and that these tapes were always given pretty much straight to Jimmy. There were no 'crew copies' or anything of the sort.

The monitor mix is something that is different from band to band, depending on the dynamic of the band. I would suggest that all the other members would want to hear Page clearly, as he was band leader musically speaking.

Bonham and Jones would want to hear each other, but Bonham would want an equal mix of Jones and Page.

Who knows what Robert wanted? I know singers who want to hear lots of guitar, others who want bass and others who want drums.

I think that it would make sense Page wanted more Bonham than Jones - JPJ played a lot of stuff which augmented and textured the guitars, rather than the guitars being based on the keys/bass, which is another way to do things.

Who knows it's all speculation really.

What's always interesting to me is, in the photos, they have NO floor monitors! Crazy! Just gigantic stacks on each side of the stage (talking about Jimmy and Robert) So, I don't think they're enjoying quite as "customized" a mix as is available these days.

  6. I worked for VanHalen from 75-78. If Ed had really met John Bonham I'd have never heard the end of it, and I don't recall anything about this. I do remember the band thinking Blackmore was watching them at the Starwood once but it turned out to be a look-alike! However - it MAY be true, and if so, most likely it was after one of VHs many gigs at Whiskey-a go-go, after all the Rainbow is a short one-block walk from the Whiskey. 75-77, couldn't be earlier. My two cents anyway...
