achillestand Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Was zepp the first band in rock and roll to be accused of satanism and subliminal messages on their lirycs? Quote
ms_zeppelin94 Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 I seroiusly doubt it, but I'm not sure. David Bowie said that Rock & Roll has always been devils music. Quote
Aquamarine Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 That goes back a lot further than Bowie, to the blues being the devil's music (as opposed to gospel) and Robert Johnson, for one, being rumored to have gained his talent by selling his soul to the devil, at the crossroads (which is where you traditionally meet the devil). That was in the 1930s, but variations of that story go further back than that. Different but interesting point whether Zeppelin were the first band to be the focus of rumors about backmasking, though. And the "subliminal messages" thing is a new one to me. When I listen to Trampled Underfoot I get the subliminal message "Get up and dance around the room" but that's probably not what achillestand meant. Quote
Jahfin Posted May 10, 2009 Posted May 10, 2009 I recall preview records at my college station back in the 80s, one of which was a Christian rock album. There was a very noticeable groove on the record that stood out so we played it backwards and it said, "why are you looking for the devil when you should be looking for the Lord?" Quote
