Oh yeah, not only did VU hit their artistic peak while he was a member of the band, but what I've heard of his solo stuff is quite interesting.

speaking of the velvet underground does anyone know a good book about them thats not "all yesterdays parties" because that one was terrible

Check out the book "Up-Tight: The Velvet Underground Story". Very informative, and it has a ton of great pictures.

Paris 1919 is a really great album to get started with for John Cale's solo work, as well as Music For A New Society, the latter is much more dreary and depressing than the former, however.

Also, I really like what versions I've heard of John performing 'covers' of VU classics.
