He hadn't had a crossover hit on the Top 20 of the pop charts since "Ring of Fire" in 1963, although he had had a number of songs that went as high as No. 2 on the country charts. Scoring on the country charts, however, meant selling so many fewer copies than needed for the pop charts that you might not even register on them. But this doesn't even hint as to how severely his career had bottomed out.
