Mavis Staples!  With Alison Krauss, Bruce Hornsby and Neko Case on Sunday at the Kennedy Center.

Then Willie Nelson and Sturgill Simpson on the 27th at a relatively new venue downtown - The Anthem.  Should be fun.

    Sounds like a great show.

I saw Mavis Staples back in November at Tower Theatre in Philly as she opened for Robert Zimmerman as I'm sure you know him.  I also saw her back in 2011 at ACL too.  What a voice and performer she is.  Not to be missed!  Also saw Alison Krauss at ACL and she was amazing as well. RP was there for her show above the stage in the VIP area.  Such a voice and fiddle player.  So good with Robert as well.  Don't know Neko Case.  Seen Bruce Hornsby when he was the keyboardist for the Grateful Dead in the early 90's as well as Vince Welnick from The Tubes.  Both added something to the GD's music live and especially Bruce.  Fit in much better than Vince.  Especially certain songs like "Foolish Heart" which was incredible with Bruce on keys!

  2. A couple of very good blues performances.  Not sure if anyone knows these two artists, but I'm guessing some of you do.  First one is Chris Duarte Group and much like SRV.  Love his guitar work here.

Funny thing is I was listening to Pandora and my Jimmy Page radio and this was first song after JP's "Liquid Mercury."  The next artist was after this.

Another good one below and much like in some ways of the blues songs Jimmy Page incorporated in the WLL medleys from 1970-73.  Most like during the latter years than earlier.

Great version.  Like the studio recording but this is better.

  3. Yikes!  The Hawaiian islands are beautiful but so volatile to volcanic activity as many are active.  Never been to the big island but have been to Oahu and the volcanic activity there isn't like the other islands.  Diamond Head on the far end of Waikiki Beach is pretty much dormant but things can change.  Not sure if actually part of Waikiki but on same shore.  Loved my visit to the island back in 2001!  It is expensive here as an island!

    It's different to espresso.

The taste of this Greek/Turkish coffee is delicious. And it's still handmade, not made by a coffee/espresso machine. Maybe that's the reason you get an espresso in every Greek restaurant but not a Greek coffee

"To make this thick brew, coffee beans are roasted and very finely ground. Then the coffee, sugar and water are mixed in a special tiny aluminum or copper pot called a briki and prepared over low heat. The amount of sugar used is according to taste and it must be added at the beginning (not after brewing, as with other types of coffee). You can order your coffee prepared one of four ways: sketos (plain – no sugar), me oligi (a little sugar, i.e. half a teaspoon), metrios (equal amounts coffee and sugar) or glykos (very sweet – more sugar than coffee). "

I like the thick brew and the full taste of coffee beans. I drink all other kinds of coffees and teas black, without sugar, but I like the combination of the strong coffee taste combined with the sweetness of sugar in the metrios version.

And the best thing about this coffee is, that you don't get it everywhere. It's rare. It's special. If a restaurant serves it, it always comes in a good quality.

Very cool and thanks for the great detailed info!

If you take the photos in the SDBS and the LZ photos from the JP book then surely you have enough photos without this new book?

im struggling to see what is to be gained by more photos?

perhaps it’s because I’ve not see how it’s going to be done....

It's because it's their 50th anniversary and all three members have collaborated on this bood, which is a first on a Led Zeppelin book.  It's authorized and not unauthorized.

  6. Give them time and see what they do.  They are all just 19-21 years old and just a bit out of high school.  See if they can mature as they get older.  Not sure if they are the future of rock but are refreshing with guys who can actually play.  As this is blues base rock and their songs have good harmonies and song structure.  Not like some of the alternative bands who are lacking this in their music.  Time will tell.

  7. It's funny how many of you say Greta Van Fleet take from Zep but then again they are young musicians and all 19-21 years old.  They are just starting.  They are one of the band's influences as well as a lot of R&B. classic rock and blues musicians.  They are very skilled musicians and certainly not another Kingdom Come in any way.  That was a one hit wonder with "Get It On."  They were pretty bad as the singer Lenny Wold said he had never heard of Led Zeppelin in an interview back in 1988 or so.  Jimmy Page commented on this and being in a band.  Greta Van Fleet admits the influences of LZ but I'm sure tired of it now as every interview with them references LZ.

Just remember what influenced Zep, The Stones etc as they took and got a lot of influences from the various blues musicians and guitarists from the 50's and before from Chicago, Texas (especially Austin area), Mississippi Delta area with Clarksdale as well as Memphis and Elvis. Even though this is the official Led Zeppelin website, there was a lot of music and mostly over the first couple of albums that the band took liberties with.  Some of it was obvious and others were a bit negligent as things Atlantic Records should have checked out but didn't.  A matter of giving credit where it was due.  Some credit given to the wrong artists etc.  I still love Zeppelin and such an incredible band and the best ever.  Not the greatest songwriters ever as that belongs to Lennon/McCartney as well as Bob Dylan.  I'm saying all artists borrow from each other and will continue to happen.  I think we should be happy there are young musicians like Greta Van Fleet who love rock and the blues as much as they do and want to do it in a good way and bring rock back in a good way.  If you are going to be heavily influenced by a band I think Led Zeppelin is a good one.  I think we all should be happy that young musicians like the three Kizka brothers and their friend Danny (drummer) appreciate great rock music as much as we do here!  So cool to have a younger generation of musicians have this ideal and follow this musical direction which may please all of us in time!  It does for me!

I don't know how else to says this!  Looking forward to their first full length album later this year as well as my first two GVF concerts in May and July at the Panorama Music Festival in NYC.  We shall see what happens in time!

  8. Here in the Northeastern USA it will be a while until mowing happens.  Things are just not growing as just been so cold.  I live in a condo so don't have to mow but very little green grass yet.  Very little buds on trees yet.  Waiting for the dogwoods in my complex to start blooming and usually around the 5 to 10 of May with no sign of this yet as just over two weeks away.  Just a cod Winter and Spring so far with a couple of days. Temps should be in the low to mid 60's by now and only in the low 50's at best for most part.  Only about 46 today and 52 tomorrow.  Some moderation in low 60's over the weekend and then back to mid 50's.  So close to May and getting this still.  Convinced global warming is a bunch of crap and just political lies with Al Bore to sell a movie and push it on the American people.

He's not concerned with environmental issues if you've ever seen his home and his heating/AC costs on his mansion and not exactly environmentally friendly back in his home area of Tennessee.  Same director of "An Inconvenient Truth" did "It Might Get Loud."  We may be in an ice age, but doesn't necessarily mean cold temps.  It's extremes.  I read things about this from sources that are a bit unbiased about it for political reasons.  It's something that hasn't happened for 1500 years.  It will last 50 years and lots of extremes as we've seen over the last several years.  From what I've read is that we're about 15 years into the pattern.  I have a friend who is in the weather industry and confirmed this.  Not a lot of specifics as tough to predict this over a long period.  Who knows what will happen?

  9. Hope in time you get to like them Steve as they are quite good.  But, I do see your point as many have with the band.  They are quite skilled musicians and can certainly play and especially in concert.  Just remember how young they are and haven't matured yet.  They will only get better.  It's a good thing to have a band like this who appreciates the blues and rock in general as they do.  This is severely lacking in music today as much of the rock today has no soul.  I'm sure you'd agree with that for the most part.

Which is what all the critics were saying in 1968/69 of course. They look funny, the singer is weird, they are ripping off other people's music, not paying their dues etc etc. There was truth in all that, but what saved Zep was their sheer ability.

It's early days, but GVF can play. Sure, there's some iffy older stuff on youtube from when they were kids, but they've come a long way in the past year. Just check the jam in the second half of Leaver/Lover from Coachella posted above. I'd defy anyone to say that has no musical worth. Sure, they reference Zep a lot, but for a young talented rock band, is that really such a bad thing?

Though I laughed when saw your Rover post. I'd spotted that similarity too. Deliberate? dunno, does it matter? no, it's a great song, most of which, while definitely 70s in vibe, isn't particularly Zeppish.

Well said C.A.  I like this band a lot.. There are a lot of Zeepelin influences in their music and style, but they do have their own identity.  There is also some R&B influences in their music as well as many of the old blues artists, Stones, Soundgarden, Guns and Roses and many more.  Remember these guys are only 18-21 years old and are just developing.  They are very skilled musicians and seem to be good writers as well.  They are a great live act as well.  Will be seeing them twice this year for the first time and looking quite forward to it as well as their full length album this year, which I hear is done.

  11. They put on a great set, even with the technical difficulties the first five minutes or so.

That's a great version of "BSR."

Here's another good one from their set.  I'm guessing this will be on their first full length album later this year.  It features some nice slide work by Jake Kiszka.

  12. They are playing tonight at Coachella and I'm sure they'll put on a good show.  This is a big show for an up an coming band like them and should give them some good recognition and press.  The entire festival is being steamed on YouTube.  GVF are playing tonight at 8:35 pm ET.  They are on Channel 2.  Below is the link for the festival.  Just click 2 on the channels on the site.

  13. Well, Chef Free, I'm glad I already had dinner as all this would make me hungry and still does but limited!  You're quite "The King" of the BBQ out in Cali.  Too bad I'm out in CT as I'd go in a heartbeat to experience your amazing BBQ!!!!  You do well,  Just by observing and unfortunately haven't been able to indulge on this!  Hope to one day.  I'll be in Vegas in October, so that's closer! :standup_bass:

  14. Nice detailed review of the GVF show.  Seems like you saw a great show.  I've seen some videos of their live shows and they certainly cut it in concert.  These guys can certainly play and are very good musicians. A ninety minute show isn't short for a band who have only released eight songs so far with their first full length album later this year.  Some of those songs didn't ring a bell and I guess will be on the new album?  The Zep comparisons keep coming and a lot to do with the media as every article I read about them always mentions this.  Getting a bit tiring and they have their own identity.  They have many influences from other artists as well and a lot of R&B performers.  I will be seeing them for the first time in New Jersey in May and also later in the summer at the Panorama Festival in NYC.  I'm looking so forward to both of these shows and hope they overwhelm me!

  15. Nice picks:

Both Phil and Tiger have been playing well and Tiger is the sentimental favorite with the comeback and what he has been through in his recovery and returning to competitive form.  Tiger only lost the Tampa tourney by a shot and that was by missing a put late on Sunday. I heard from a friend who's been down at The Masters with huge crowds following Tiger around with his resurgence.

Fleetwood is a good pick but he is so hot and cold from week to week.  I've picked him in my Golf Channel Fantasy this year but not consistent for me.  Their league is you chose six players and all given a dollar value based on world rankings.

    Here is who I have:

    Tiger

    Phil

    Justin Thomas

    Daniel Berger

    Patrick Reed

and a dark horse at bottom of pile with  Shubhankar Sharma from India who has played well across the pond and in Asia.  Had only the minimum $'s left.  He has same dollar value as Tiger at 5K.  Phil is 25K and Justin at around 30K or so.  Maybe 33K up there with DJ, Ricky, Jordan and Rory.

I'm sure it will be an amazing weekend as always and can't wait til it begins.

We put 300 in per each for year.  Payouts greater for four majors plus Sawgrass and Tour Championship. Winnings for 2-3 placings as well.  Money for overall placings at end.  Only won $175 last year, so a loss.  No firsts and all 2-3.  Much better this year and only three months in.  I have a 3rd, a 2nd and two 1st place showings.  That's $275 so far and makes up for a bad 2017.  Many more chances.  Quite happy so far!

Good luck to all in The Masters!

So far having a good year with the league as 25 of us in it on the GC site.  You go by their set up and creat a league and players enter and set up payouts as you wish.

Cote du Rhone red wine.  I brought the rest of the bottle home.  I'll get the vineyard tomorrow - I don't feel like getting off the couch at the moment  :D

I love those wines and especially the reds.  I always have a few of them in storage at home.  They don't last long in storage!   I love medium bodied reds like these and great drinking wines.  I visited this area back in 2013 and glad I got to visit a vineyard in this region.  Also included a lunch at the estate and the food was so good with such variety.

news said he went in the hospital with pnumonia a few weeks ago.  Probably got the flu and it got worse.  So many older people get pnumonia and then the infection spreads. A shame if that is how it happened. Wasnt cancer or heart attack, something that may have been prevented if he had gone to the hospital a little sooner.

He had been sick for sometime.  I remember hearing he had to be rushed to the hospital and may have been a heartattack, while he was on a flight.  May have been from Italy and they may have had to land at another airport.

Not only a great player but his charity work outshines his baseball work.  He did a lot of work for homeless children as well as running different charities for first responders of police and fireman in NY.  I think one of these may have those who were lost in the line of duty and raising funds for their families.  Did a lot of great work during 9/11 in NYC for a lot of these charities.

He also owned and operated a few Italian restaurants in the NYC area.  He could have made the Hall of Fame if he had chosen a different path.  Instead of becoming a pinch hitter in his latter career days he could have gone to an American League team and become a DH.  Instead he chose to remain with the Mets and loved NYC immensely as well as his restaurants.  But it was his charity work in the area that kept him here.

Just a class individual and wish there were more like him.  He will be missed so much.  I met him in Spring Training for the Mets when I was young and was quite nice.  Also in the Mets restaurant at Shea Stadium about 15 years ago and talked a bit with him.

    He will be missed!
