  1. Thing is -and I say this as an old school fan saw the original trilogy in the theatres, etc- I think even by taking on this Episode 7-9 project that JJ Abrams has had the dice loaded against him from the get go. He basically has unbelievable -if not outright impossible- expectations to live up to in order to escape the wrath of Star Wars fanatics the world over, to wit: with his trilogy he has to top Episodes 4-6, and I don't know if that can be done. And I say this as someone who actually didn't find Episodes 1-3 that bad. Flawed, yes, but if anything what I took issue with were the myriad of continuity errors in the prequels, and not petty complaints about Jar Jar Binks or Hayden Christensen's acting abilities, etc. Hell, I don't really blame George Lucas for selling out to Disney; I reckon "Star Wars" had gotten to be such a bloody millstone around his neck -and especially basically being made into Satan spawn by legions of Star Wars anoraks over the prequels- that he was glad to turn it over to someone else.

I'm sure we can take comfort in the fact that Abrams is apparently trying to give Star Wars fans exactly what they want with these new movies, just as long as he doesn't try too hard...my advice would be not to get our hopes up too high...Star Wars fans don't suffer fools gladly!

Ya know I really don't think is't too hard or too much to ask for the writers & director to get it right...here are IpMan's pointers to making an awesome Star Wars film:

Step 1. Watch Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back.

Well, that's really it, just watch the fucking movie, see what they were doing and what they were trying to convey, then write a new story following the logical conclusion of the plot line of episode 4-6.

See, not so hard, So JJ, please mail my check for $10,000,000 to...

  2. ^^^

    Happy belated birthday to you.

    :birthday:

Warm and happy birthday wishes to some people I used to have fun chatting with but haven't been around in a long time...Kimbersays and Lëah! Hope life is good for you and you have a fun birthday today.

    Cheers to you both! :toast:

Thanks Strider...now on to some Turkey :chickeddance:

  3. Ya know I remember Jimmy saying something during an interview in the mid-70's, something along the lines of him being the "fuhrer of the fourth reich" in regards to how Zeppelin took to the masses in much the same was as national socialism (nazi's) took to the German volk (people) in the 1930's. As the Germans were hungry for leadership after the failure of the Weimar Republic, the record buying public were hungry for great music following the break up of Cream and the eventual self destruction of Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Allman, and Graham Parsons. So, there might be a connection, although a misguided one I admit.

Also his caption, "here I am wearing Hugo Boss" might be interpreted as an indictment of human nature. IE: Hugo Boss, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Pfizer, etc are all German companies and individuals who used slave labor and supported the Nazi machine, however at wars end instead of these folk being held responsible for their crimes the world instead embraced their products as if nothing criminal had happened. We have academy award wining actors & actresses, Presidents and Prime Ministers all wearing Hugo Boss and driving their Mercedes while pumping themselves full of drugs supplied by the very same German pharma companies which funded such luminaries as Dr. Josph Mengele.

Who knows, artists think in artistic terms and frequently ignore the obvious implications in search for higher meaning. I guess in the end only Jimmy knows for sure what his intention and meaning were that night.

  4. Neal Preston pretty much put to bed the reason why Jimmy had and wore the outfit. Supposedly both Jimmy and Richard Cole were obsessed by some S&M porno movie they had on VHS and one of the main characters was a female nazi in full regalia.

So, take equal parts smack & alcohol addiction, love of a bad porno, and the encouragement of an equally addicted idiot (Richard Cole) and this is what you get. Don't read too much into this people, just some doped up rock star who did a pretty stupid thing at the time (go figure).

I was at this show too and I did not care what Jimmy or anyone else was wearing, the show was blistering, amazing, one of the best from the first leg of the tour. That was the ONLY thing I cared about. Shit, if Peter Gabriel could appear on stage as a damn turd while performing with Genesis I am sure a nazi hat and some boots is not quite as bad as it could have been.

  5. Had a most lovely Halloween, went trick o treating with a friend and her wee children and had a real blast. That is until we came to this one particular house. The house was well lit, windows open, and people inside. The little darlings went up and knocked on the door, guess what happened...

A woman opened the door flanked by two very embarrassed children of about eight and 12 respectively. The woman then began to berate my friends children for engaging in the satanic practice of trick o treating and celebrating a pagan holiday like Halloween. The friend and I quickly approached the door of the home, my friend spiriting the children away, as I calmly asked the woman if she believed as she did, why did she open the door. She told me she was a Jehovah's Witness and it was her duty to educate her children and everyone else to the evil of the holiday. I just shook my head and walked away.

I feel sorry for her children, not so much for being denied a holiday as for their mother feeling the need to include them in her beliefs to such an extreme.

You see, this is only the tip of the iceberg when people take belief too far. My friends kids really did not care, they thought the woman was bat-shit and continued on their beg fest and collection of molded sugar products. We all went home at about 9pm, watched the Exorcist with the kids (just kidding on that one), and relaxed while watching the Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin special. Oh, and pumpkin pie! I love me some pumpkin pie.

  6. RJD was not only a great singer but he was without doubt one of the kindest, sweetest human beings I ever had the pleasure to meet. I was lucky enough to make his acquaintance in 1984 during the Last in Line tour in July. The concert was great, the stage show beyond compare, then to meeting him the next day completely by accident. Just gotta say this, we talked about Italian food and Chicago's Little Italy for a good 45 min. RJD may have been one of the best singers, but in the end he was first and foremost a son of Italy. The man knew his food.

  7. I, love Seger. He was Springsteen before there was a Springsteen plus he has a great voice. One of my fondest memories is attached to both Night Moves & Mainstreet, whenever I hear either song it brings a tear of joy and longing to my eye.

Seger is one of my top five song smiths, as far as writing a musical picture, both him and Springsteen have no comparison. It is life set to music for the everyday American. True rock & roll Americana.

  8. Breaking Bad action figures

They mentioned this on the Today Show this morning. I guess soccer mom's across the US are up in arms over the possibility of their little darlings playing meth cookers during recess. What a hoot...I LOVE IT!!!

  9. Don't know about nurses being better at sex, maybe they were in the 70's, I was too young to know. What I know about them now is most are overweight, smoke, and have nasty dispositions. The few that are attractive and kind tend to go after doctors and ignore everyone else.

    Nurses do it better..only golddigging!

  10. I'd have to agree and disagree with Strider. For me the Berkeley 1971 version is as good as it gets, and the organ worked better than the mellotron (same with ''Thank You'')

While there are some 1971 solos that are hardly inspiring and some of them are of the ''who bets 3 Euros that Jimmy's gonna finish on the next F major chord'' sort, in 1971 and early 1972 every solo was quite unique. In 1972 Jimmy started using his ''templates'', including the riff that wraps up the solo (which I am not a big fan of). 1973 saw further development of templates. In 1975 he used the same standard riffs from 1973, the solos got too long for my taste (frequently Jimmy seemed to kill the time before returning to another stock riff of his). Of course one must take Jimmy's technical decline in consideration. I don't think there are more than 10 solos from 1975 that I really like.

Naturally, I agree with everybody that Plant's singing and attitude got worse every year.

Studio version is indeed superb, but the coda could have been more powerful (I don't know how).

    So, my favourites are:

    Berkeley 1971

    Toronto 1971

    Tokyo 1971 (23.09)

    Osaka 1971 (both shows)

London 1971 (BBC and Empire Pool)

    Manchester 1971

    LA Forum 1973 (2nd show)

    Providence 1973

    TSRTS

    Good solos:

    Seattle 1975 (2nd show)

    Final night of Earls Court

    For Badgeholders only

And if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the battlefield.

Have to disagree about a couple of things, first, Jimmy's "technical decline." I don't think he did decline in that sense as is proven by several amazing performances post-73'. In fact technically he became better over time, not worse. I think what you are trying to say is consistency, or lack of which I agree 100%. When he was on he was on, as in Jimmy "on" in 77' or 80' was better than when Jimmy was "on" 69' - 73'. The problems IMO come back to the drugs and alcohol and the fact that they always changed the songs...this is a very bad combination. Some musicians can handle getting loaded and playing fine, however Jimmy is not one of them, either that or he just took way too much. Either way, as a musician myself I understand the way to improve technique and consistency is to not only practice, but to get a particular song down by playing it over and over again EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. This is why bands that play songs note for note tend to make less mistakes over bands which improvise nightly. It's called muscle memory, your fingers get used to the patterns through repetition so even being pretty wasted if you play the songs exactly the same way you will probably pull it off. Jimmy was always switching it up, improvising, and if you cannot focus guess what happens? Jimmy did not get "sticky fingers" because he was losing technical ability, he became more sloppy because when he went into a solo, a time change, or an improvised passage his mind was going in several directions at one time and not focusing on a clear direction. It would be akin to having five guys screaming at you to do five different things simultaneously while performing a task you can do in five different ways. This is why when he performed clean, or at least not completely wasted, his performances were excellent. Case in point, Jimmy's playing on the 98' Page & Plant Tour was in my opinion the best all around playing he has ever done, including the Zeppelin years.

So, it's not the era per se, it's sober & healthy Jimmy vs. wasted & devastated Jimmy. Sober Jimmy of any year, form 67' - 07' blows away wasted Jimmy from any year.

As a result my favorite STH depends on the particular performance, I prefer the great versions from 75' - 80' to the great versions from 71' - 73'. Just more creative overall.

  11. I believe, as far as Prince is concerned, peoples opinions of others can change over time depending on circumstance and happenstance. I know Prince was quoted many time in the past how influenced he was by Led Zeppelin and how amazing Jimmy Page is. People though can be easily swayed in opinion by external factors, such as maybe a fellow musician had been giving Prince shit saying, "Damn Prince that guitar solo you just laid down is bad ass, too bad is sounds just like your last 10 solos...if you were only more like Jimmy Page, that guy always had a different solo depending on the song..." Or maybe he met Page and they did not get along. You just never know, catch someone, anyone at a bad time and they may call their mother a skank if the two are not getting along.

  12. Can't speak for Carl, though I agree with what he posted 100%. I love both Breaking Ban & House of Cards but the winner is House of Cards, just has more nuance overall. Kevin Spacey has won more awards during his career than the entire cast of Breaking Bad combined.

    So, I like them both.

I can't wait for Game of Thrones, oh myyyyyy!!! (Spoken with George Takei's voice, who btw is god.)

  13. Cold, but I like it that way. I am a romantic at heart so extremes in climate kinda turn me on, and even if you don't like the cold, Montreal is a beautiful city. Of course springtime after a hike up Mount Royal is simply breathtaking. St. Joseph's & McGill University...what more can I say.
