:bravo: That "Ten Years Gone" was AWESOME! :bravo:

Love seeing/hearing it played on the Les Paul.  Such depth with multi-guitars....as it was written to be played.

Favorites come and favorites go, but Ten Years Gone is always at the top for me as far as Zeppelin songs go.

Me too mate. This version of TYG is my go to, because of the sound quality and the multiple guitars. Just a pity it's not Zep

Great post, John M!  I will break this out again and give it a listen.  The muddy production always throws me, and it remains disappointing all these years later that Page and Plant allowed the album to be hampered that way.  I've been hot and cold on this album at various points across the years.

Standouts to me are WTWWY, nice deceptive mellow groove at the start, and then very powerful.  Blue Train strikes me well in recent times.  Most High is great, but I actually prefer the "single" version.  It's more concise and punchy imo.  Heart In Your Hand is brilliant, and I imagine Plant's lyrics can probably hit home with most folks.  Clarksdale is one of the best songs they ever came up with, and Page is tremendous here.  Many of the live versions of this were incredible.  Burning Up is a bit silly in a way, but I still always like a song where Page lets it rip, and Plant's "like a volcano" refrains at the end are cool.  I like When I Was A Child, Plant is singing well and with emotion, and I really like Page's guitar work there.  House Of Love and Sons Of Freedom are strong and edgy rockers.

The Japanese "bonus" track Whiskey From The Glass is a sort of post-apocalyptic dirge, very effective.  And the b-side The Window is a very dark and moody piece.  Also I would again mention the live b-sides from the Shepherd's Bush gig.  I think it would really be great if Page and Plant released that gig as an "archive" release.  The band played well that night, and the recording is amazing.

Which songs make the b sides? Know where I can get em?

  3. Thanks everyone for contributing to this thread, it's really helped me a lot. I've had a good listen now to most of the recommendations. The Eat a Peach title really doesn't do it for me. Gotta say, the Slumpy Matrix is the stand out to my ears. Really enjoy it. Good bottom and top end, as well great atmosphere/ambience. The drums sound fuller, but the guitar in particular has more body. Really evident in particular on Bring it on Home and SIBLY. Thanks again all

Some of the top selling LPs in 1980 were The Wall (Pink Floyd), Emotional Rescue (Rolling Stones), The Game (Queen) & Back in Black (AC/DC) so there were plenty of 70s rockers doing well for themselves going into the 80s.

Also worth point out that Deep Purple split up between '76 & '84 & writing off punk rockers as 'poorly educated' is a bit of a sweeping generalisation when a lot of them came out of art schools.

Having said that, I'm of the opinion that some things belong in a certain time & place & I would apply that to Led Zeppelin & the 1970s, I think it's for the best that they broke up & left a pretty untarnished reputation musically.

Good point re albums in 1980. Some other good stuff to come out in that era - Guns n Roses, the Pogues, the reformed Floyd (never reached the standards of the Waters era but still good), the Cult etc

Back in 1999 and 2000 (as well as one performance in 2011 and 1995), Jimmy Page joined The Black Crowes onstage for a tour in those 2 years, doing some Black Crowe songs as well as some Zeppelin tunes. A lot of bootleg footage and audio exists of this show. This is personally my favorite of Pages post-Zeppelin "projects", a shame they didn't do a full album, but I am thankful for what we do have!

He's a complete knob. On the BBC broadcast of Whitesnake at Donnigton (when Steve Vai was in the band for five minutes) he kept goading the crowd to shout fuck at every opportunity because the BBC doesn't sensor swear words, just because swearing is tolerated does not mean that it should be encouraged.

I remember that. I listened as a teenager. Even at that age, it seemed immature to me at the time. Nob

  7. Ratt were absolute shite. I was a teenager when hair rock, or whatever the fuck it was called, was all the rage. I was already into Zeppelin and Roy Harper. Guns n roses were good though.

When I went to the "Monsters of Rock" in Donington 91, it was AC/DC , Metallica, motley Crüe, Quuensryche and the Black Crowes. That was a proper line up, except for Motley Crüe. They stank the place out

That PG statement by Plant does sound odd and off. Maybe sometime in 76' or so Robert started to see and feel a bit of

darkness with the encroaching addictions and physical limitations of the car crash. As or around the album being

released ? Greatly explained by Kelly Girl, no way.

All the speculation about replacement drummers is mildly intriguing, but entirely misunderstood. Hasn't anyone ever

noticed after Zep that in the Firm, the Outrider project(album and live), etc., basically until Unledded that Jimmy simply

never sounded as full as when he had Bonzo ?? Even then ((Unledded) etc., basically it took JASON till 2007 to do a reasonable version of his dad. Just listen to Zep live with Jimmy soloing on Sick Again, Bonzo is drums and RHYTHM

guitar, and on many more songs. Let alone the ESP improvising between band members.

Dunno about that. I thought he sounded terrific in 98

  9. My two cents worth. Zeppelin were doomed from the moment of karacs death (and possibly before) and . Robert has admitted the guilt he felt at being away and not being there for his son. To reunite with the band that resulted in him being away, in conjunction with the fact that it was jimmys band (not his)...was always going to lead to resentment. As a father I can completely understand that point of view. Bonham's death was the straw that broke the camels back. They were on life support 1977-80....and then that was the end.

And when you throw into the mix jimmy's heroin abuse....

The decision to split was not so much the right decision. It was the only decision. And I completely understand Roberts decision to never re-unite. He has mixed feelings about Zeppelin. Amazing band. Amazing times. But it caused him to be away from his son when he died. He lost his best mate. And he was always second fiddle to Jimmy, who was also best mates with the manager. After a successful solo career, why would he?

"Slumpy" is the kind soul who worked on the recording and made it sound so nice.

Well mate, it's friggin good. My difficulty with the other sources, including Eat a Peach, is that you lose either the top end, the low end, the audience etc. This seriously has the best of everything. It's terrific. Transformed this show for me.

My problem is that I'm too much of a friggin perfectionist. It's to my detriment, because there are unbelievable shows that my ears can't tolerate (e.g 19/09/70). In fact, I don't think it's perfectionism. I think that anything that sounds remotely 'tinny' is torturous for me. Like a cats paws scratching down a blackboard.

It's really interesting how all of us have different 'bootleg ears'. The audience recordings that are good are better than soundboards e.g Millard, freezer, Copenhagen 79, montreaux...just not that many of them I can tolerate. Shame really.

Thanks everyone for your comments on the thread and your help. Much appreciated.

  11. Guys I've got both individually and collectively and the heavy vibraphones version off the bb website. Sampled some songs and they sound terrific. Far better than anything I have including the eat a peach version imo. First impressions are that heavy vibraphones just shades it. Good job porgie and thanks for the tips

My personal fave is Individually and Collectively, a 3-source Slumpy matrix, utilizing primarily the old Genuine Masters source, along with the "5th source", and a bit of the Rubber Dubber source to patch.  It's a smooth listen imo.

So is that it's title 'Slumpy'? Or is that the label

  14. Guys, could use some help please. This seems to be discussed in several places in this forum, but I was hoping for a discussion devoted to this and this alone.

From what I've read, there are many different audience sources of this gig. Also, many different labels have put this out.

My question is, what is the definitive version?

    Cheers

Argenteum Astrum is hardly the most trustworthy source in Zeppelin collector's circles...just sayin'

If you read the descriptions of releases on his website, it suggests or implies that he or she has heard them already. Do you know if this is true Nutrocker?

No one's gotten it just yet. Prepare to possibly be disappointed, as no other songs from the show are on this "new" source than what we already have. They claim its an upgrade in sound but it seems doubtful at this point.

Ah bollocks. Was hoping there would be more songs. Anyway, thanks for the info Sue

There is a very nice sounding aud/sbd matrix of 5/25/75 by Blue Congo ( forum member) , I think he called it King Jimmy and The West Bromwich Blues Band.

As stated above , Winston's matrix of 8/4/79 is really excellent.

Yep, that's exactly what he called it, 'king Jimmy.......... I've heard quite a few versions of the show and this is the best. The Winston of the 11th August 1979 is best. As for the 4th, no idea
