  1. I'm glad your "deep research" confirmed what I had remembered ! :D

    Coincidence ain't it ?

Oh and ~tangerine~, around the time of the Royal Scam sessions, I thought Steely Dan might tour. There's an excellent recording of their studio sessions that were tight small unit basic tracks that could've easily been a road venture. They had so many musicians on those sessions they could've picked a touring band from. The bootleg is called Plastic Dildo. That've been a great show !!

How's it going "gadgetguru?" A coincidence indeed? Thanks for reminding me of that interview with Jimmy Page regarding that statement, I had forgotten all about it. ROCK ON!

  2. Hey ZeppFanForever!! Steely Dan is in my top five all-time favorite bands!! I have been a fan since I was very young. I remember my older brother listening to "Babylon Sisters" and "Hey Nineteen" and I was immediately drawn to their jazzy sound! Their sound is like no one else. I have their "Aja", "Katy Lied" and "Showbiz Kids-The Steely Dan Story 1972-1980" CD's. They have so many wonderful songs, it is hard to name just one favorite. I never tire of listening to them. I haven't had the opportunity to see them live yet, but as soon as I do, I am going to jump on it! My father has a live CD of them though and it is excellent of course!! :D

How's it going "Melanie_72?" It seems that STEELY DAN played an important part in our teenage years growing up in the 1970's huh? I never get tired of listening to STEELY DAN either. I love STEELY DAN'S music. ROCK ON!

  3. I really like Steely Dan but I have to admit AJA was the most over-played recording since Hotel California in the late 70s.

You couldn`t escape Deacon Blues, Josie, nor Peg.

Favorites are FM, Do It Again, Show Biz Kids and of course, Reeling In The Years

How's it going "L 7?" They really did play the hell out of those classic STEELY DAN songs in the 1970's huh? I used to hear them on the radio, at Tower Records, in the night clubs (I had a fake I.D.) and during the half time shows by our high school marching band. You are right, there was no escaping it. ROCK ON!

  4. I was too young, and my first concert wasn't until the summer of 1979 (just barely a teenager). Anyway, i know fans of Steely Dan were always hoping for "tours" over the large part of their career. They could have and should have done "some". There are plenty of musicians that would have loved to go on the road with them. :)

How's it going "~tangerine~?" Hmmm... You were just barely a teenager in 1979 and I was just about to graduate from high school in 1979 at age 18. I can't believe how fast the years go by. ROCK ON!

  5. I used to listen to them a lot. I've got the whole catalogue but I'd probably say Gaucho and Aja got the most airplay. More due to the fact that's how I discovered them, and then went backwards to hear their early stuff.

As an aside, when I was in high school marching band, we played Peg at halftime :D

How's it going "ninelives?" WOW, that is so cool that you were in a high school marching band. I've heard a few high school as well as college marching bands play "Peg" and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" while I was in high school and college some decades back. STEELY DAN were definitely pretty popular back then. ROCK ON!

  6. Actually during their first couple of years DID tour. Maybe you were too young or not even born yet to be aware of that at the time.

I have a couple of live shows they did in 1974 and they're great as a smaller combo. I enjoyed up through Gaucho and then they're DVD they did later on.

I think overall my favorite is Pretzel Logic. Parker's Band, Through with Buzz, Night by Night and Monkey in your Soul. Second would be Countdown to Ecstacy and that Rick Derringer solo on Show Biz Kids. Fantastic.

Who was it that said the solo the guest guitarist, Elliot Randall did on Reelin' in the Years was their all time favorite?

    Was it Jimmy Page? B)

How's it going "gaugetguru?" As promised, after some deep research, I found out that Jimmy Page did officially say for the record that Elliot Randall's guitar solo in the STEELY DAN classic song "Reeling In the Years" is his all-time favorite guitar solo ever. ROCK ON!

How's it going "gadgetguru?" You definitely know your STEELY DAN well. COOL! I must confess, I do not remember if it was Jimmy Page or not. I'll have to dig through some research and find out. I promise that I'll let everyone know if it was Jimmy Page or not. ROCK ON!

  8. Since Steely Dan weren't a tourig band, i never saw them live. I know they did finally tour sometime recently, but unfortunately i haven't been to many concerts since becoming a mommy. I did however see Donald Fagan in concert sometime in the late 80's (had a bf who was into new age type jazz as well as rock music). I'm pretty sure it was a the Valley Forge Music Fair, a small venue, and we had seats very close to the stage.

I grew up enjoying their music. Fave songs would be Dirty Work, The Fez, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Reeling In The Years, My Old School, Show Biz Kids, Black Cow, Don't Take Me Alive, Kid Charlemagne, Any Major Dude Will Tell You...

Julian Lennon is a Steely Dan fan (trivia)

How's it going "~tangerine~?" I'm glad that you are a STEELY DAN fan. They recorded so many great songs but my favorites are "Do It Again," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Reeling In the Years," "Peg," "Josie," "Deacon Blues" and "Black Cow" to name a few. As for being a STEELY DAN fan, Julian Lennon was highly influenced by STEELY DAN. ROCK ON!

  9. Steely Dan was never one of my favorite groups, but I got to admit I did go see them twice, once with Beck, Bogert and Appice. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was still playing guitar at the time and Reelin' in the Years and Do it Again were big hits. After Baxter left and they mellowed out, I really couldn't stand them anymore. But damn, the chicks sure loved them, so they did something right :D

How's it going "danelectro59?" You ain't lying, I met a lot of chicks at a STEELY DAN concert in L.A. during the late 1970's. What a treat that was for me. ROCK ON!

  10. AJA my favorite album. :D

How's it going "PennyLane?" STEELY DAN'S masterpiece AJA album from 1977 should rank as one of the all-time greatest albums ever. I have the AJA album in the ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING 24 KT. GOLD ULTRADISC series on CD by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL). Believe me when I tell you that the MFSL version sounds unbelievable. You have to hear it to believe it. ROCK ON!

  11. How's it going fellow die hard hard core ZEPPELIN fanatics? We're getting closer to New Years Eve and New Years Day huh? My next thread is a tribute to another one of the all-time greatest bands to arise from the 1970's. I hope that you enjoy reading it.

STEELY DAN will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered as contributors for writing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest classic songs ever to come out of the 1970's. Many of their legendary songs from the 1970's sold in the millions and still counting. And because of this, STEELY DAN has continued successfully in recording and releasing great albums and solid hit songs and entertaining audiences the world over since the 1970's. STEELY DAN'S music is without a doubt, a true testament of the genius and sheer talent of two original founders, mainstays and brain children of one of the greatest bands ever. STEELY DAN is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band done good. Their music is their story.

STEELY DAN was born in Los Angeles, California in 1972 consisting of two main founding members: Donald Fagen from New York and Walter Becker from New Jersey. Fagen and Becker would meet in 1967 while attending Bard College in upstate New York. Fagen would graduate in 1969 with a Degree in English Literature and Becker would later drop out of college. As fate would have it, Becker would not need a Degree to succeed in life, music would be his and Fagen's key in making it successfully.

After serving as tour musicians with JAY AND THE AMERICANS and trying their hand as staff writers at ABC-Dunhill Records in L.A., they formed STEELY DAN in 1972 as an outlet for a growing backlog of offbeat, original material that no one else seemed inclined to record.

In the beginning, STEELY DAN was an actual band with the line-up consisting of Fagen, Becker, Guitarist's Denny Dias and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (THE DOOBIE BROTHERS) and Drummer Jim Hodder. This configuration line-up would record the "CAN'T BUY A THRILL," "COUNTDOWN TO ECSTACY" and the "PRETZEL LOGIC" albums respectively. Though Dias remained on board through 1977's masterpiece album entitled "AJA," STEELY DAN were almost completely Fagen's and Becker's fiefdom by the time the "KATY LIED" album, their fourth album was recorded and released.

On record, the duo of Fagen and Becker recruited the cream of L.A.'s Jazz-Pop studio scene including Michael McDonald (THE DOOBIE BROTHERS), Victor Feldman, Jeff Porcaro, David Paich and Jazz Stal warts like David Sanborn, Tom Scott, Michael Brecker, Larry Carlton, Chuck Rainey, Bernard Pudie, Phil Woods and Wayne Shorter.

STEELY DAN'S Music speaks for itself. When you think of STEELY DAN, you think of the 70's hit songs such as "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Reeling In The Years," "Do It Again," "Peg," "Josie," "Deacon Blues" and "FM" to name a few.

Which brings us up to today. STEELY DAN is here to stay! STEELY DAN has successfully continued in recording and releasing great albums to this very day. Rock n' Roll definitely needs a great band like STEELY DAN in order to keep the glorious tradition of Rock n' Roll sounding beautiful and giving Rock n' Roll a new breath of fresh air when needed. STEELY DAN would also receive the ultimate highest honor by being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame in 2001. I know for fact that we have not seen or heard the last of STEELY DAN. This legendary band still has so much to accomplish and contribute to the Rock n' Roll world that I cannot imagine Rock n' Roll without a legendary band like STEELY DAN. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? KEEP ON ROCKIN' STEELY DAN! ROCK ON!

  12. okay if you like acdc then you should post here just saying what your favorite acdc song list is. Here's mine 1:highway to hell 2: back in black 3: for those about to rock 4: TNT 5: hells bells. 6:you shook me all night long 7: let there be rock 8:dirty deeds done dirt cheep 9: big balls 10:jailbreak

How's it going "ACDC?" It is really hard for me to choose a favorite song especially since I love all of AC/DC's songs and albums. My favorite album is the "Back In Black" album from 1980. In my opinion, the "Black In Black" album is Brian Johnson's Eulogy to the late great Bon Scott. "Hells Bells" is without a doubt, Brian Johnson's all out Eulogy to Bon Scott. Why, because Robert Plant sang about a Stairway To Heaven, Bon Scott sang about a Highway To hell and Brian Johnson sang about Hells Bells. My favorite song on the "Black In Black" album is "You Shook me All night Long." ROCK ON!

  13. I am getting into the Gabriel Genesis era at the moment. My fav genesis album (at the moment) is Selling England By The Pound. So, anybody else like Genesis?

How's it going "ledzep45?" I LOVE GENESIS! I also love PHIL COLLINS, MIKE & THE MECHANICS & PAUL CARRACK'S 1970's band ACE. Who can forget PETER GABRIEL, I always love his 1980's hit song "Sledgehammer." Great thread "ledzep45!" ROCK ON!

  14. The U.S. Vs. John Lennon is a must for those that may not have seen it. VH1 tends to show it from time to time.

    usjohnlennon.jpg

How's it going "Jahfin?" Being a die hard hard core BEATLES fanatic, I own just about everything there is to own on THE BEATLES including bootlegs. I own and have seen "THE U.S. VS. JOHN LENNON" on DVD many times, that is one hell of a Documentary film huh? I like this DVD and the "IMAGINE, JOHN LENNON" DVD, they both really tell the true stories of John Lennon well. ROCK ON!

  15. Oh I'm not criticising Brian at all. I have a lot of respect for his musical contributions. I was just saying as an audience member it was very uncomfortable to watch and listen because the guy facilitating it kept trying to ask more questions to keep it going. I'm happy he's doing better now!

How's it going "ninelives?" I'm sorry, I never meant to make it sound like you were criticizing Brian. I never took it that way from you at all. I just kind of talk about Brian the way I do since I do know him personally. Please forgive me. ROCK ON!

  16. I attended a symposium a few years ago where Brian and Van Dyke were talking about Smile. While it was interesting, Brian was barely coherent and answered with one word responses and Van Dyke basically had to keep it going. It was pretty sad to see him in that state.

How's it going "ninelives?" Believe me when I tell you that Brian is back better than ever. When Brian finished SMiLE, it was like a big heavy weight was lifted off of him. Brian sounds so much better now. Please remember that Brian is in his 60's now, SMiLE messed Brian up for almost 40 long years. You're talking about a true Genius, a music maker whose legendary unreleased SMiLE album nearly destroyed him since he could not finish it due to pressures from THE BEACH BOYS Lead Vocalist Mike Love, Brian's father Murray Wilson and the Capitol Records label whom THE BEACH BOYS filed a lawsuit against. With all of these pressures, Brian didn't have a chance. Please watch the DVD Documentary entitled "SMiLE, Brian Wilson and The Story Of SMiLE." As I stressed earlier, Danny Hutton played a big part in the Brian Wilson/SMiLE story in 1966-1967 and Danny makes a few appearances on the Brian Wilson DVD. The SMiLE story is one hell of a true story. ROCK ON!
