Conneyfogle, I was there that night. I sourced the complete concert filmed from back near the soundboard. I've also got the complete audience audio recording sources. The Britannia cover art for the trading community was done by my friend Ingo after I'd given him a first generation copy of several of my recordings when we met in Koln, Germany in January 2000. Having said all that, I don't recall ever seeing the pro-shot iTV footage in circulation, nor the feed to the screens. I'd actually like to get them both myself. Conneyfogle Posted January 5, 2010 Author Share Posted January 5, 2010 Thanx for the info Steve, I remember when it was broadcast on TV, but I was out, normally ITV would repeat the broadcasts but this time they didn't, I was sure it was screened a day or so after the concert, but alas I have not had much luck finding anything about it, a fantastic concert it had to be said! Jones files this report for FBO: Reading is promoted as the last festival of the summer for those of us in good old Blighty. It is a Bank Holiday weekend meaning everyone is expected to be somewhere or do something fun. Leave it to my friend to not only forget about the festival but fail to get a "kitchen pass" from his wife so as to attend. I made my drive to Reading, taking in the nicer parts of London's M25, the world's largest circular parking lot. I arrived at 7:30pm but parking is surprisingly not a problem and shockingly it is free. I duly collect my pre-paid tickets from the Box Office and venture towards the entrance. Touts out front are "buying and selling" but their business is not brisk. I don't even bother trying to sell off my spare. Evidently approaching the festival site from downwind one was hit by the stench of unwashed bodies and fields full of pup tents. No mud, no chimps in the wire, and few hippies about but it is a three-day-festival so give 'em time. Perhaps today their busy working for the Man! To proceed into the main performance and market area you have to exchange your full, unused ticket for an orange wristband. I protest that I want to keep my stub but to no avail. Perhaps it's just as well that Kitchen Pass couldn't make it tonight as I'm able to keep that spare intact for the archive. There are three performance stages and also two market areas consisting of stalls selling sundry junk from such as paper lamps, disposable cameras, and tapestries of distorted faces or something. There's a beer tent and a cinema tent. Food selection is so abysmal I elect to go hungry. Page/Plant aren't due to hit the Main Stage until 9:45 pm! It is general admission and the crowd for Britpop band Ash reaches all the way back to the soundboard. I'd guess about 10,000 in attendance. I'm not an Ash fan so I'll simply say they were off at 21:15 which was followed by the world premier of their new video on the two screens on either side of the Main Stage. Page/Plant take the stage on time to a warm reception. Jimmy wore THE shiny blue shirt from Knebworth Festival 1979 (kidding!)..he was dressed all in black. Alloted just an hour and forty five to deliver the goods our hardy Ex-Zeppers threw the acoustic set overboard and played just pure electric. The set list stood like a standing stone; no surprises for this Traveling Led Head but I've long since reached the point of being spoiled, as have many of you. Particular performance notes would have to include Michael Lee's opening salvo to kick-off the show. I swear his opening drum sound sounded like fabric being ripped. Very peculiar and very cool. Robert's vocals wailed, he was in very fine form indeed. Jimmy soloed confidently, yet having to pull up short - particularly within the theremin solo - to fit the truncated format. Appropriate really, as this whole English summer had been rather like a promise you meant to keep but couldn't. One had the ability to see one's breath after the final notes rang out. Robert had sung the summer sun down for good. By the way, Melody Maker was a Festival promoter and in their August 29th issue a member of a band playing in the same time slot as Page/Plant was shooting his mouth off about how boring a band Led Zeppelin were. Further, that his band would start a sonic war by turning their quadraphonic sound system on them. Melody Maker commented it was a battle his group would win, "no sweat". If there's any Melody Maker editors scanning this list, make sure you derisive lot get this much down: we only heard your pissant group - and just barely - during our sustained wild applause that brought two legends out for their encore. --Steve A.
