Windows or Apples or Oranges.

IMO there's only one which is beyond compare. Soundforge, as far as free your looking at a 30 day free trial on this and then 300 USD plus taxes after. That is unless you may wanna know *coughs* another way. Modifying music is a bit tricky, but fun and you can get some really interesting results too. Let me know what you think and there are some alternates. I hear they are working on something new and refreshing soon.
