  1. Ah yes, Deep Purple - the Cortinas of rock. Never remotely in the same league as LZ, but I used to love them, and can hardly bear to listen to them these days. I put on Made in Japan recently, and had to turn it off after 3 songs. Eww.

IMO, the MKII sound has aged REALLY badly. Too much yucky Hammond. "Taxi for Mr Lord?" Their studio albums were puny, and their live improvisations deadly boring. Mks III & IV were more interesting musically, and haven't aged nearly as badly.

Baldrick's high-water mark was with RJD, specifically Rainbow Rising, side 2 to be precise. What a colossal side of vinyl that was. Ok, so Stargazer was a desperate Kashmir tribute, which has nevertheless rightly earned 'classic' status, but 'Light in the Black' is the true unsung epic, probably Baldrick's crowning glory. Absolutely stunning.

Nobody was in the league as Zeppelin when they were on form live..period, but Purple were more cosistant live and were and are in the higher orgder of bands, Blackmore did say he wrote "Stargazer" after hearing "Kashmir", but its not second rate,The late/great Dio's vocals are good.

PS The hammond is glorious and Lord is a virtuoso. Blackmore had to work hard to keep up with this guy.

Rainbow was my first concert, as a 10th grader in 1983. Blackmore was amazing. I remember "Jealous Lover" lasting like 20 minutes, his fingers blazing the whole song.

I first got into Deep Purple about the same time, with "Deepest Purple." I went straight from there into the albums, with "Machine Head" being my favorite. I have the original quadraphonic mix on SACD...the mix is great, the sound quality so-so.

Thats cool, I got "Deepest Purple in 1980" and saw them many times from 1985 onwards, first being at "Mudworth" or "Knebworth 85" as its better known, I never did get to see Rainbow as was more into Purple, but seeing them at Knebs was my fave concert moment up untill 2007.

Where abouts did you see Rainbow ??

  2. I'd been wanting it for a few years, but never saw it on CD at a decent price, it was always the wrong side of £10. I eventually downloaded it from iTunes for £7.99 with some Christmas money.

Mandrake Root and Wring that Neck from the In Concert record was the first I heard of Purple other than SOTW, great stuff, we need to get the Purple thread up again :)

  3. Hi not Pool supporter.....".I'M FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES":D

Can't watch your link, this stupid Laptop freezes every time I go on youtube :(

Ah thats a shame, its just a video of quotes from Gerrard saying that divers a ruining the game, interspread with a montage of Gerrard being a hypocrate and diving in the box trying to get and getting penalties.

Bubble eh....Bobby Moore a true legend, a word we over use but he is one without doubt.

  4. Manchetser United V Liverpool 3rd round of the F.A Cup.... These two north west teams have dominated English football in the last 40 to 50 years. Only 45 to 55 mins down the East lancs Road between each other.

Doen't matter who is on form or is winning the most, when these two teams lock horns anyone can win. Its the mother of all games in England. Both have proud traditions and have a mutual respect through gritted teeth.

  5. The Astoria Theatre, 157, Charing Cross Road, London, WC2

The Astoria was coverted from a factory to a Theatre in 1927, Jimi Hendrx played there, it is indeed one of the best venues to see any form of music as the acoustics were great. Its a travesty it got demolished in 2009.

Have happy memories seeing Robert Plant on his "Non Stop Go Tour" in 1988 and a few others their.

  6. Don't recall that .....

    My link

^^^^^^^^ Enjoy the read, the guy invented it and as it says on the website now its just part of guitar playing like pull offs, hammer ons, tapping and your sweeps too. A legend in the guitar field. (not sure link is working but stick his name in and you will get to his website)

  7. Holidays are over, and tomorrow it is time to leave family, friends, girlfriends and the most beautiful hometown behind, and go studying <_<

Saying goodbye to go away is very hard and never gets easier, have had to do that a goodfe times over the years, food luck and enjoy ya studies.

  8. Good one fellas!

Q: What is the difference between an Australian fielder and a condom?

A: One drops a catch and the other catches a drop.

Make the most of it for the next 18 months or so until we go over there and we'll see who has the last laugh! :P

Well done to the Poms and it must make a nice change to be winners again particularly away from home, finally, after 20 odd years.

Don't get too carried away, SA will be hard to beat anywhere and India aren't pushovers either with their "concrete" pitches and they play well away too.

Complacency can be as big a factor in winning or losing, just as much as the opposition.

Good luck and remember we will be watching you!

Nice one, I do think with this set up that complacency isn't an option with England this time. Greatness is only achieved 5 years from now and if we are consistant,

You went over and beat S.A last year didn't you in S.A ?

  9. All wight then Leddy Aussie jokes is it?

    Q. What do you call an Aussie with a bottle of Champagne?

    A. A waiter.

Don't worry all my Aussie fiends, twill not last, I'm certain it was just a blip, Australia will be back at the crease in no time at all knocking England for six, over and over again, so "NO WORRIES HEY BRUCE" and good luck.

    Regards, Danny

Yeh I heard that one too lol :)

  10. Ok and appologies but hey its been a long time, but the jokes are flying in thick and fast today.....What do you call an Aussie handling a bat ????..........A vet.....boom boom, ...will duck for cover right now as the missle get fired in the direction of England.

  11. Well we did break some records, good to know aussie's do not hold a grudge....:)

This has to be one of if not the best assembled side England have had, but we will only see that next year with India, then South Africa the year after. What a year with us winning the 20/20 world Cup, this and now we must set our sites at being number one, and for once I don't think its idle talk. I think the Aussies have an ok side really, I read some Aussie press from just before it statred saying why we wouldn't regain the Ashes...love it when the press get iit wrong.

The one dayers should be fun.

  12. My late dad would be very proud later tonight, we have waited along time for this, I rememberwatcing it with him 24 years ago, been to a few ashes matches over here, but to win in such a way and break lots of records on the way, even he would be surprised...

  13. Yeah well done England and hard luck Australia. Makes a bloody change to win the Ashes over there. It's been so long. :)

Although day 3 of this last test match is in the balance, would be great to win the series and not draw it...also its pink day for the charity of the late Mrs Mcgrath which is a good thing and brings awarness of breast cancer.

  14. Very proud of England, since Michael Vaughn was capain untill now and Strauss England have started to have a backbone..these wins have been probably the most comprehensive I have ever witnessed from our side..we now have to set our sites on India next year and hopefully become the the no 1 side in the world, but thats after we need to win in the last test to make it 3-1, as a drawn series would only paper over the cracks of the OZ team.

And a big thanks has to be to the Barmy Army..however many times England have been thrashed in the past, they were always there singing and supporting...they deseve this and hope they are having a great time over in OZ. I think other countries should take note and not just support your team when the going is good...its more important when your down, the barmy Army are just amazing...:)
