  1. Christ! I didn't get into Rainbow/Purple until I was about 14 (back in 1982 ish). Gillan had been producin some commercial tripe and Rainbow just had such an 'orrendous image, I struggled to get past that and just enjoy their music.

I was at Knebworth and held them as my favourite band of all time a few years later, despite Richie's guitar sound being a bit rougher and Ian's drumming being less crisp.

Then I saw them at the NEC the next year (or year after) and felt deeply dissapointed. Sluggish bunch of old men riding on past glories. But by then, I had discovered and collected the full catalogue of the mysterious Led Zeppelin, who barely attempted to make an impression on the mainstream media and had remained 'true' until the end.

It's funny, cos I stumbled across this thread midway through a rare Deep Purple session I'm having (as opposed to the many Zeps I have) with a bottle of Red and some Speckled Hen.

In conclusion; They were great in many of their forms, and poor in a few.

Ah Mudworth 85, what a horrible wet day, the wettest June day ever I reckon, but Purple were great, funny in 87 I saw them at Wembley and Birmingham and thought the shows were really good ....happy days :)

  2. Last time I saw them was in 91 at Donnington and it was great, its been to long and i am armed and ready to click buy tomorrow morning to get Wembley tickets :)

Sorry you feel like that, I agree Purple with Blackmore was an exciting band and I do miss those days and gigs :( but I have seen Purple a couple of times with Morse on guitar and although he does have a boring kinda onstage persona, he is stunning as a guitarist and some of the Morse era songs rock :).

I do however hope that Blackmore and co would get together again, but I don't think thats going to happen :(.

  4. UK/Ireland stadium dates added:

    London Wembley Stadium (June 26)

    Dublin Punchestown Racetrack (28)

    Glasgow Hampden Park (30)

Should please a few people.... :D

Yes thats going to be good, Got a gig on Sat 27 June in Brighton but looks like I will be going to London the Day before to Wembley :)

  5. Wow, that was just brilliant. Exactly how I feel about Pink Floyd.

Cool :) they were masters of it.

The feeling of space in their music is more likely the result of the way they produced their albums. Nowadays music is commonly smashed together to get it to be as loud as possible so as to 'stand out'.

Making it loud hasn't got anything to do with it, if its a one min piece or a 25 mins, alot of bands today want to just cram it with notes, they write the songs so if they want to play one note instead of 8 in the second they can. Dont get me wrong I love a bit of thrash and speed (and guilty of it myself when playing, but not all the time) but thats all it seems to be, not alot of contrast. Thats what sets Zep and Floyd apart from the wannabees I guess .

  6. I pulled out the Shaken and Stirred disc for my drive to work today, and it has been some time since I've listened to it. Sixes and Sevens is such an overlooked gem from Robert. He sings with such melancholy, I wonder what was the inspiration behind it. Anyone else care for it?

    Sixes and Sevens

Love the song, loved that album when it came out, I think i should go an listen to it, bet it sounds dated though.

  7. this might make me v unpopular

does anyone else, other than me, think pink floyd are probably the most overrated band in the world?

listening to their albums from 68 through to the final cut (i dont count the ones without roger waters as they are completely dire) it strikes me there are only 3 good ones out of the whole bunch.

their early ones are just a lot of un-melodic noise and the later ones (the wall side 4 on vinyl and the final cut) just a weak attempt at some kind of brass band opera style pomp.

dark side of the moon is good BUT not that good, wish you were here and the first 3 sides of the wall are probably the only good stuff they ever released.

it amazes me how they are consistently put up there with Zeppelin as one of the greatest bands in history.

just listening to their drummer is enough to put you off

anyone got any thoughts on this?

Have to dissagree to some extent as I think the Rolling Stones are the most overrated band. Floyd with Barret was very inovative..broke new groud, then he went, give them their due , songs like Echoes and DSOTM also was very groundbreaking, so for that alone they deserve alot of credit. Their use of space in the music giving it time to breath , build up was a great thing in some of their music, in a day and age where people feel they have to cram every millisecond with a note or notes just in case thay have to actually feel the music and time..they still can still do it for me every now and then.

  8. Rainbow was a good band. I think all line-ups made some great stuff. The only album which isn't that great is Down To Earth. I'm not too found of Graham Bonnet's voice.

I prefer his to JLT, JLT is to pure for me...although Dio was perfect I thought for Blackers.

Former RAINBOW musicians Joe Lynn Turner, Tony Carey, Bobby Rondinelli and Greg Smith have united with a second-generation Blackmore to form OVER THE RAINBOW.

    OVER THE RAINBOW is:

Joe Lynn Turner (RAINBOW 1980-1984) - Vocals

Tony Carey (RAINBOW 1975-1978) - Keyboards

Bobby Rondinelli (RAINBOW 1980-1983) - Drums

Greg Smith (RAINBOW 1994-1997) - Bass

    Jürgen "J.R." Blackmore - Guitar

Carey, who has produced several artists (including Joe Cocker and David Knopfler) since his RAINBOW days, says, "Having done everything from country to opera, I thought it would be fun to play some rock again without the burden of singing everything."

Rondinelli adds, "OVER THE RAINBOW reunites members of one of the most distinctive sounding bands of all time and introduces a hidden treasure to the world in J.R. Blackmore."

The son of the iconic RAINBOW founder/guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, Jürgen Blackmore is a critically acclaimed guitarist in his own right and agreed to join this endeavor after realizing how intense the demand was for a RAINBOW "reunion." OVER THE RAINBOW marks the first time that four members from three different eras of RAINBOW will take the stage together along with J.R. Blackmore.

RAINBOW has spawned over 20 albums (five gold, four silver), seven Billboard Hot 100 and Mainstream Rock tracks, six Top 75 UK songs and at least seven MTV frequently played videos. Their longest tenure was from its inception through 1984 when it went on hiatus so Blackmore could reform DEEP PURPLE. A decade later, RAINBOW toured and recorded an album. Since then, Ritchie Blackmore has turned his focus toward BLACKMORE’S NIGHT.

Since 1998, former members of RAINBOW and their respective management offices have been bombarded with requests for RAINBOW to reunite. Carey, Rondinelli, Smith and Turner answered "the call" but agreed that the only legitimate way that this could be accomplished was with a Blackmore on guitar. Enter: J.R. Blackmore.

How does the younger Blackmore feel about sharing the stage with musicians he grew up watching perform in concert with his legendary father? "I have not worked with them," says Blackmore, "But I have admired them since I was young. That makes them like brothers."

Greg Smith agrees that the market for RAINBOW's brand of rock is under served. "I know there is a big demand for this music," he says. "The fact that all members are ex-RAINBOW from different periods in the band's history will give the music the integrity it deserves. A Blackmore on guitar will give it even more authenticity."

While Joe Lynn Turner has fond memories of collaborating with and great respect for Ritchie Blackmore, he's looking forward to working with his son. He states, "J.R. is the only logical choice for the guitar slot for OVER THE RAINBOW. I have followed some of his projects over the years now. He's very talented."

OVER THE RAINBOW will begin touring in Russia during February of 2009.

That could be interesting :) just such a shame it JLT doing vocals :( , dio would of really made it good.Do they have a website ??

  10. Thought it was time to get this thread back on the go, just been listening to la Villa Strangiato, Tom Sawyer and YYZ. One of the top bands I have ever seen, great music, musicians..the musicians musicians for me. Got to be the best three piece ever in my books.

  11. I sure hope so too! Been checking fan forums and it seems a though they may play the O2 again on 25th and 26th of April, only rumours you understand. My 18th birthday is on the 19th of April and this would be one hell of a way to celebrate!

REALLY hope they add more London dates, can see them selling out a stadium easily - Wembley or Twickenham perhaps? There's also aways the Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park.

Hopefully they'll be an announcement soon, otherwise I shall go and see Airbourne in November!

Yes lets hope so, but I would imagine they will :)

  12. 23 Apr 2009 Birmingham NEC 2008-10-17 October 17

I expect more will be added as they seem to be going like hot cakes everywhere else. Its 17years since I last saw them.

  14. Congrats Ritchie, There is a short interview with Candice in Classic rock this month, when asked if she is the Yoko Ono and stopping Ritchie playing with Purple/Rainbow again, she replied look Ritchie is Ritchie and he will do what he wants...I tend to agree..sadly missed though in the rock world :(..although I think they said he plays alot more electric guitar on the new album :) and covers a Rainbow tune.

  15. Have to say in the 80's I loathed their music, but in the the 90's with Warren Cuccurullo on guitar and i have to say Ordinary world is a really great song with some tastful guitar..I also liked the Covers album Thank You with the Zep classic with again some tastefull guitar work .

  16. I saw Rainbow in December of '75 in Seattle, WA at the Paramount Theater. I was a huge Deep Purple fan so I had to check them out. They were brilliant! There were a lot of empty seats though, sad.

That must of been good, I read that alot of the tour you saw had empty seats, Purple were just very popular then and i guess Ritchies name wasn't a big draw there as it was in UK !!

  17. Yea, me too. And the band around him would be Elf or "Rainbow MK1" as it is usually called 'cos they did it the best. Sadly Cozy Powell isn't seeing it...

I would want to see Deep Purple MK1 once more... Possible?

Don't think its pos in my opinion, I would like to see MK III again. Jon Lord has said that he would like to do one last DP gig were all members play from every lineup..if he could pull that off then I for one would be like last year getting a Zep ticket, i would sell my gran :)
