  1. One thing Gilmour deserves credit for with his slide playing is he used it in a very non-blues way. Echoes is pretty far from the Mississippi delta. A+ for originality, but yeah not very technical. Though I'm surprised I would mention something like that, creating good music has little to do with how technical the finished product is.

Exactly. What makes Gilmour such a stand out, IMO, is he never played blues.

  2. I would agree...Gilmour isn't in the same class of musician as Page or Hendrix. But he certainly is one of the greats in rock and roll guitar history. Next to Duane Allman, I can't think of anyone of that generation who played a better slide guitar. B)

  3. with reference to gilmour playing bass - it is widely accepted that this is the case.

in fact waters himself has admitted this in numerous interviews

I've never heard Waters confirm that. I know its true based on album sleeve notes and David being very candidate about recording sessions.

i agree generalizations dont work - but generally speaking i find their music to be too rehearsed

thank heaven for sound effects and lightshows B)

To that, I'll agree. Pink Floyd, before they brought in numerous backing musicians and vocalists, were a subpar live act..at best.

Again, you have your opinion. That's fine. But your way off with their success being largely due to marketing. Good music doesn't need good marketing. The music speaks for itself. And in the case of Pink Floyd, their musical is timeless. And that speaks louder than any marketing scheme.

  4. ^ Nick's drumming deteriorated towards the end of Floyd. He has said he wasn't into the music anymore because of a divorce he went through in 1975. This lead him away from his earlier style and to much more simple beats (The Wall). I know he stopped playing for a few years in the 1980s-and I think this only further hindered his abilities. He couldn't even play drums for "Dogs of War" on Momentary Lapse of Reason so they got Carmine Appice to fill in. In fact, I think Nick only plays drums on two songs on that album.

I have seen interviews where Gilmour was quite upset with Nick about his drumming too. While recording the Wall, David felt Nick wasn't putting in his weight and doing all he could. I agree.

  5. Speaking as a drummer myself, I think Nick Mason is a fantastic drummer. And balls to anyone who thinks otherwise.

    I agree, especially pre-WYWH.

I've never been a big Barrett fan and find Piper rather boring. But I understand it's importance to the scene in London at the time. It's a terrific psychedelic album. But I prefer Hendrix "psychedelia" to Barrett "psychedelia."

One could put Meddle in the top 5 most underrated albums of all time. It's a masterpiece and shows where their newly evolving sound would end up, ie Dark Side. Obscured By Clouds is probably my favorite B album by any group and has one of Floyd's best songs, Wut's Uh..the Deal. You also get a hint at Waters' reoccurring theme of "loss" with Free Four. A theme that would become the anthem of Pink Floyd for the rest of their working career.

The Final Cut should have been a Waters solo album. It's absolutely dreadful. The only one to benefit from it was Rick Wright. He luckily left before then.

I've always enjoyed the first side of Momentary Lapse of Reason. The Division Bell, on the other hand, is pretty weak in comparison.

You cannot compare a band like Pink Floyd to Led Zeppelin. It's easy to lump them together because marketing has them both branded as "classic rock." But Zeppelin were good-time rock and roll with no real message other than have a good time while you can...Floyd's message was more internal and more about the fragility of life. I think that's where Floyd's real connection with fans is. They had the ability, possibly better than anyone, to speak to their fans about the hardships and pains of living everyday...and with themes like "greed, government, death, loss, awakening," it's not difficult to see why they appeal to so many people.

And the music ain't half bad either. ;)

  6. One of my fav lines of all time..

I got stopped by a lady cop

    In my automobile

She said get out and spread your legs

And then she tried to cop a feel

That cop she was all dressed in blue

Was she pretty? Boy I'm tellin' you

She stuck my butt with her big black stick

I said "what's up?" now suck my dick

Like a ram getting ready to jam the lamb

She whimpered just a little when she felt my hand

On her crotch so very warm

I could feel her getting wet through her uniform

Proppin' her up on the black and white

Unzipped and slipped "ooo that's tight"

I swatted her like no swat team can

Turned a cherry pie right into jam

    B)

  7. I owe everything in my musical being growing up listening to the boys. Because of them, I can harmonize and sing a tune. Because of them, I had the warm ocean in the middle of winter. Because of them, I bought my first board at age 8 and haven't looked back. And eventhough during their heyday, they were despised by the surfing community, who preferred more underground rockers..next to Dick Dale, the Ventures, the Sandals & the Surfaris, they single handedly created music for people ready to embrace a laid back lifestyle of pure fun.

We all know Pet Sounds and its influence on music that followed. I personally love Surfer Girl being it has their best song, In My Room, on it and the title track was the first song I knew all the words to as a kid.

Such a shame the way the band fell apart and struggled to regain their musical composure after Brian's breakdown and the numerous tragedies that plagued the Wilson family. BTW, Dennis' solo album is nothing short of brilliant. It's scary how unique of a talent he was in his own right, but sadly alcohol and drug abuse had taken their toll on him by that point and we eventually lost him not long after. Carl had the best voice in the gang while Mike was the charasmatic lead.

The only band to rival Zeppelin as my all time favorite musical act.

Btw, Brian's new album is absolutely great. He's back in his primal form.
