  1. I thought so too. Apparently they all came from slides.
  2. I watched the Beach Boys for a few songs from the perimeter of the downtown Raleigh amphitheatre a couple of weekends ago. Even though I like them I didn't feel it was worthy of forking over the 50 plus bucks to get in. Nor was it worth being hassled by security (or the police) for peeking over the fence for a few songs. I don't think I ever snuck into a concert.
  3. Cool story from the Philadelphia Inquirer but also a bit alarming, especially considering what happened to John Lennon in 1980. Vincent Johnson on stage with Lionel Richie at Live Aid during the "We Are the World" finale. That's Vincent on the left. To watch footage of the performance, click here.
  4. As I mentioned in the Movies thread in the Ramble On section of the board, I saw Marley over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. For me, it was a very short 2.5 hours as the film moved along very briskly and there were never any dull moments. I was aware of Marley's father, Captain Norval Sinclair Marley but you learn even more about him in the movie. This article from the Daily Mail also provides a bit more background on him. Revealed: The white ex-naval officer who fathered Bob Marley was a British captain from Essex Smile: Captain Norval Marley was the father of singer Bob, according to local gossip; here he is pictured on horseback in Jamaica
  5. Rush with original drummer John Rutsey performing "Best I Can" in 1974. He would have been 59 years old today. Rutsey died from a heart attack on May 11, 2008.
  6. Me thinks they were high on more than just consolation when this clip was filmed.
  7. There's far too many photos to post here (plus the image extension used on the site isn't allowed here); to see them all go to this link at DenverPost.com.
  8. Perhaps this was '77 as Skynyrd's plane crash was in October of that year.
  9. Booker T remembers Donald "Duck" Dunn:

  11. He wasn't my friend, he was a well known musician who played with Steve Cropper (the person that posted the message above on his Facebook page). Donald "Duck" Dunn, along with Cropper, were members of Booker T. and the MG's, perhaps best known for their instrumental hit "Green Onions" (though Dunn didn't actually play on that cut as he wasn't a member of the MG's yet). He had a long and impressive career that included stints in several different bands as well as being a sought after session musician. Even though I'd heard "Green Onions" many, many times and I had heard of Booker T. and the MG's it wasn't until the Blues Brothers came along that I really became aware of who Donald "Duck" Dunn was. The one and only time I ever saw him in concert was when he was a member of Neil Young's band during the Music In Head tour in 2000.
  12. From Steve Cropper's Facebook page:
  13. I've never been to anything but the current location but apparently it's had several different locales over the years. Someone that used to work with Southern Culture On the Skids on album artwork has recently started posting a bunch of old promo stuff from them on Facebook. Also in his collection are lots of old photos of other bands (regional and otherwise) playing at various venues such as the Cradle and the Milestone in Charlotte. 14. I really enjoyed this and thought it was very well done. If you've read anything about this documentary at all then you already know it doesn't gloss over Marley's story and paints a very honest picture of who he was as a husband and father. It's been a very long time since I last read Timothy White's book Catch A Fire so it was refreshing to watch a documentary that doesn't just focus on the popular image of Marley as some sort of spokesman for ganja. Yes, that side of his lifestyle is included in the movie but it's far from the main focus. I came away from the film feeling very inspired but also somewhat saddened. Not just because Marley died so young but because of some of the realities of how he raised (or more accurately didn't raise) his family. This is a must see for any fan of Bob Marley's and reggae music. Here's a link to a list of theatres currently showing the movie. There's also info there on how you can watch it right away via a variety of different media.
  15. I'm not sure, a location wasn't given.
  16. The Gourds tonight at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC with Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) opening. Also on the bill is The Wandering which includes Luther, Amy LaVere, Shannon McNally, Valerie June and Sharde Thomas.
