  1. From what I've read they only had a licence to fly within the USA on Starship/Caesars.

In one of the Zep books ( sorry, can't remember which) they refer to a break (unscheduled?) during the tour and they take a vote where they want to go. Bonzo wanted to go back to the UK but was reminded they only had a licence to fly within USA.

Yes, that's right. Their 1/26/75 St. Louis gig was postponed because a bed-ridden Plant was suffering with the flu in Chicago. Their next date was not until Greensboro on 1/29/75 so it was decided to get out of Chicago for a few days to enjoy the delights and warmer weather of Los Angeles. It was not possible to fly back to England aboard The Starship as Bonzo had suggested.

Page, Jones, and Grant arose early to fly to Greensboro from LA the day of the show

while Plant was flown in from Chicago. Greensboro is cited by some as their worst gig.

  2. The entry you posted was from "who dated who":

http://www.whosdatedwho.com/celebrities/co...-jimmy-page.htm. It says that Page stayed at Catherine's house the first TWO nights after Led Zeppelin's debut. Then it says that Page & Pamela's relationship started at the Hyatt House after the band went up to San Francisco. That could possibly be interpreted that he spent the third (or even fourth) night in L.A. at the Hyatt House with Pamela, and went up to San Francisco later. After all, he did have a few days between the 1/5/69 LA show and the 1/9/69 SF shows.

Led Zeppelin's flight from Seattle arrived LAX on 1/2/69 and they were booked into the Chateau Marmont on Sunset Blvd. My notes show Alice Cooper was the opening act for

four dates: 1/2,3,4,& 5 offering other leads. I show only the second set on 1/2/69 was cancelled (Jimmy having the fever of 104 degrees after traveling from frigid cold Seattle). In other words, they did perform each of the four nights but cut it short the

first night. I could be wrong (but this was a critical market/engagement for the band).

Insofar as having a few days between the 1/5/69 LA show and the 1/9 San Fran gig,

I show Jimmy, Robert, Bonzo and Pam were all at Thee Experience on the night of Sun,

1/5 but the band left on 1/6 for San Fran in a station wagon with Richard Cole driving.

It seems Jimmy may have gone to Catherine's despite not feeling well, but he did retain his room at the Chateau Marmont, substantiated by the Norwood Price visit.

  3. Photos for ages were attributed to the 1/2/69 show. As for the 1/3/69 show? They probably played it, but one can never know.

Who knows, maybe the girl in the audience in this picture is the infamous Pamela herself (it certainly looks like it could be her):

    whisky69-d.jpg

Led Zeppelin absolutely performed at the Whiskey a Go-Go on 1/2/69 because the next day photographer Norwood Price called Jimmy from the lobby of the Chateau Marmont to offer him the photos he'd taken of the show. Jimmy (and a girl) met Norwood poolside and Jimmy kept the photos. I don't know for certain if the photo above was taken by Norwood or someone else, but Norwood did shoot the show in b&w.

  4. Steve A. Jones - IN RESPONSE TO YOUR POST #75

Very impressive presentation. I'm inclined to agree with you on all points. All that's left

to do here is further substantiate a Led Zeppelin concert at the Ice Palace in Las Vegas

on 7/31/69. I intend to contact Rodney Bingenheimer to see what, if anything, he can add to Michael Chain's recollections about this gig. If Rodney went he may well have saved the stub as he has quite a collection of music memrobilia.

  5. I don't have Pamela's book, but I remember reading the 4/28/69 entry in the bookstore. She goes on to mention that Page was sick and that his shoe fell of like Cinderella's slipper, and that he had to be carried off the stage. It was obvious that she was actually referring to the January 1969 Whisky shows when Page was sick.

Since she was four months off on that recollection, I kind of take all of her recollections with a grain of salt.

Steve, I think you meant to say the band played Irvine on 5/1/69, not Pasadena. Either way, they're both in the L.A. area.

It's certainly plausible she is referring to the 1/2/69 Whiskey a Go-Go gig in LA, where

Jimmy performed with a fever of 104 degrees & the second evening set was cancelled.

I meant to say Irvine on 5/1/69. When going from memory I post something incorrect!

    :)

  6. I did find a source that states he was wearing a black suit for the 12:00 am performance on August 12, 1969.

    elvisconcerts.com/concerts/Concert_expand.php?id=25

Yes. Ultimately I think it can be proven he wore a black suit for multiple performances

throughout what was his "comeback" engagement running 7/31/69 and into August.

Best evidence to support Led Zeppelin attended opening night is Bingenheimer's presence and his recollection they received those special gifts to commemorate

    the occasion.

  7. Pamela DeBarres - I'm With The Band Page 152

    April 28, 1969 Entry - ........P.S. Big news....Led Zeppelin are arriving tomorrow...

    The next night my dear Mercy accompanied me to the Whiskey to see Led Zeppelin.................After this thrilling display we made our way to Thee Experience, Jimmy Page sat apart from it all, observing the scne as if he had imagined it;

May 8, 1969 - I took my country fiddle and left the sleazy temptations of Hollywood to Led Zeppelin's roadies............

    http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/ledzeppel...lin-in-america/

"The first time they came to town they hung out at this place called Thee Experience," recounts Pamela DesBarres. "We went there and saw a fantastic guy--Bo Diddley was there--and they were all there,

......."I noticed he was just watching and trying to get me to grin at him and everything, but I was trying to ignore him." Ever the smoothie, Page sent over infamous road manager Richard Cole to do his bidding--handing DesBarres a note revealing the guitarist's room number at the Continental Hyatt House on Sunset Strip. "I guess he thought that I would show up there, which I didn't," says she. "That always made you intriguing to whoever it was."

    .......

Ok, the first thing is this essentially seals the deal on accurately placing when they

as well as Pam were in attendance at the Bo Diddley gig -- April 1969, not August.

Further support: Jimmy said they went to Los Angeles for three days in April 1969 (apparently 4/29 thru 5/1 with a gig in Pasadena the night of May 1) to work on the second album at Mirror Sound and /or Gold Star and Pam's account fits squarely

    within that time frame.

Secondly, the preponderance of the evidence essentially seals the deal on accurately

placing when they as well as Pam (and Bingenheimer) attended Elvis in Las Vegas -- 7/31/69 and possibly, but unlikely, immediately before or after a performance of their

    own in Las Vegas.

Given they played Santa Barbara on 8/1 it's possible, though highly unlikely, Jimmy

flew to NYC and back to work on the album on that date. So the possibility of him

having done so on 8/12 after performing in Las Vegas on 8/11 remains open. FWIW,

Peter was in fact already in NYC and did not return with Jimmy to Los Angeles. If

Peter flew to NYC from Salt Lake City (or LA) on 8/11 (no Las Vegas gig?) or 8/12

and rejoined the group in Lubbock, TX on 8/13 he would not have missed any gigs.

  8. ....Rodney B. places the Band in Vegas July 31, 1969...Robert Plant also calls the NME Musical "Going to See Elvis"....Rodney B. is at the Press Conference/Elvis Aug. 1 (see picture)...

You've raised some valid points and some of the dots seem to connect. I wish we could

find something to substantiate the recollections of Chain, Bingenheimer and DesBarres.

I can see where Jimmy would decline to meet Presley if he knew he (Page) had an early flight to NYC to catch the next morning.

  9. SAJ...This is to confirm that Las Vegas Concert Date is July 31, 1969 (NOT AUGUST 11, 1969)...(edit)

I'd like to agree their Las Vegas concert could have been 7/31/69 and they may have gone to see Elvis afterward, however Pam also claimed Jimmy had Richard Cole sent a note to her at Thee Experience while she was watching Bo Diddley perform (7/31/69). She claims Jimmy called her the next morning from the Continental Hyatt House in L.A. to inquire why she didn't come over to see him and then invited her to that night's concert in Santa Barbara (8/1/69), which began their relationship. Obviously, if her recollection is correct she could not possibly have gone to the Presley concert with him (or them) on 7/31.

Insofar as Kramer's claims, he may have mixed it over a weekend, but we know for certain Jimmy was present for just a few hours (per Yorkie's first-hand account) and

there's no reason why his involvement could not have taken place during the week.

Very much a mystery in progress and I think we are getting ever closer to resolution.

  10. Many moons ago someone had inquired on why The Firm covered the Righteous Brothers' classic 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling' on their debut album. Well, this from Paul Rodgers:

"We were in the rehearsal room, really searchin' for material and Jim just said 'What is the one song you've always wanted to do?' I said, 'Do you really mean that? I don't know if you're gonna like it. It's a real blue-eyed-soul song - 'You've Lost That Loivin' Feeling'." And he got right into it."

  11. Steve,

Just thought of this question. At the end of tour legs and end of tours (73-77), did The Starship & Caesar's Chariot fly over the Atlantic and take the boys back to England or did service end somewhere on the east coast and they relied on other travel arrangements to get back to their families?

This is a really great question for Frank Smith's Starship stewardess. I've never seen any evidence to suggest The Starship or Ceasar's Chariot made trans-Atlantic flights

for Led Zeppelin, nor have I seen a photograph of either aircraft on a London tarmac

from '73-'77. So far as I know the band always entered and exited the U.S. on commercial airliners via New York during this period. For example, on 1/15/75 they flew from London on British Airways to JFK International in New York. Upon arrival,

they boarded The Starship and departed for Chicago.

  12. I don't think he ever outright says that they all appear on the final cut, but aludes to them all being present and taking part in the times. Again, could be pure Donovan spouting off making time, but the part that intrigued me from the get go was the UN-denial. And subsequent non retorts to every time Donovan continued to make this claim.

Will stay tuned for more. It just seems preposterous for him to claim, if he did, that Bonham was involved in his album sessions at all. Jimmy's recollections are not always

accurate either; not long ago he spoke of their five nights at Earls Court in 1976.

  13. You seem to have forgotten how in his last book Donovan states the opposite of what you say here, and did so as recently as his appearances in Woodstock, NY ( the real Woodstock not Bethel ) where he was promoting I forget at the moment some film. And what about all his other jibberish about how he's resposible for Zeppelin?1 eh? And fwiw, when the book mention was first discussed elsewhere, a certain guitarist I am very fond of, did NOT disagree with Donovan. Too many shrooms or not, you'd think after all that talk, someone would have made a definite retort if none of Donovan's claims were true. ..just some other food for thought apprentice.

At best he could arguably take credit for his sessions having brought JPJ and Jimmy together, but neither Robert Plant nor John Bonham were involved. Are you saying he has claimed otherwise?

  14. There have been some fantastic contributions made to this thread, and I applaud those who took the the effort to do so. It does seem they attended the Elvis show in Vegas on 7/31, and remains likely but arguable Led Zeppelin returned to perform in Vegas on 8/11.

  15. John Paul Jones and Clem Cattini have both stated that Jimmy Page and John Bonham did NOT play on "Hurdy Gurdy Man". However, even if they're both wrong, consider this:

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" was released on May 3, 1968. The Yardbirds hadn't even broken up yet. John Bonham was still 3 months away from meeting Jimmy Page or John Paul Jones.

It is virtually impossible for John Bonham to have played on that session.

Scott is absolutely correct, and neither Donovan nor Jimmy have ever suggested Bonzo was on this session either. The first session featuring Jimmy, JPJ w/Bonzo (and Robert) was for PJ Proby's 'Three Week Hero' album.

  16. http://www.worcesternews.co.uk/news/local/...erry_Lee_Lewis/

    ...

In 1991, Johnny really came to the front, when he performed almost 100 shows with Mike Sanchez and The Hoola Boola Boys, even being joined on stage on occasions by Robert Plant.

    ------------

    What date(s) were these?

Jeff, sorry to hear of the death of Johnny Caldicott. Unfortunately, I have nothing on file concerning jams he may have had with Robert Plant. However, the search is on.

  17. I will be visiting with a tour so I hope it won't be too frantic.

Have done so as well and enjoyed it but not as much as venturing out on my own.

I must say the driver on the group trip I was on told the most outlandish stories about Crowley as well as Jimmy during the brief Boleskine House stop. For example,

he said Crowley had an underground passage to the burial grounds and would steal bodies. He also said Jimmy was having some work done on the property and a pile of bones was unearthed. When Jimmy contacted the local authorities as to what

he should do they allegedly sent back a two word reply: "bury them".

On another occasion I hired a cab to take me to Boleskine, and I was very amused

that the female driver would neither stop nor stay anywhere near "that evil house".

She said she was a local and knew of which she spoke. Anyway, I was not amused

to trek the remainder of the way on foot but tipped her quite well nonetheless.

  18. Miss P...I am with Band..

August 12....Anaheim Stadium, 8,500 screaming raging people, a twenty five minute standing ovation...........Jimmy and I smoked and drank at the The Ex and went back to the hotel....

........We're off to Vegas now to see Mr. Presley.........

We stayed in the elegant suite with a king-sized bed up on a platform, and sat right in the front row to see the King reclaim his throne. He was wearing black leather and looked like ten gree Gods as he tore through "Love me Tender,"Don't be cruel, and jailhouse rock.".........He was sweating, he was in the flesh, he was alive, inhaling and exhaling. And there I was in Vegas, breathing the same air as Elvis Presley, sitting with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, completely and entirely beside myself. Some sideburned grease monkey appeared after the show, asking Jimmy if he would like to meet Elvis. He said "No", thank you," and I never quite got over it....

    .........

Prior to August 12, and after August 6...she also writes....On his day off, we stayed in my bedroom, listening to the test pressing of Led Zeppelin II over and over again while he took reams of notes.........

    not edited...

Jimmy didn't have a day off between August 7th & 12th unless he did NOT play Las Vegas on the 11th.

Pam is incorrect about Anaheim on 8/12, it was 8/9 and Ritchie Yorkie said Jimmy flew to NYC on 8/12 via Salt Lake City to work on LZ II mixes and flew back to LA that night.

If Pam is correct about having stayed the night in Vegas with Jimmy, it must have been

either 8/11 or 8/12 as they played Lubbock, TX on 8/13. It's interesting she does not

mention Led Zeppelin having played in Las Vegas. The mystery continues...

  19. Blocoboy has posted a fascinating discovery to this thread that places Led Zeppelin in

Las Vegas in 1969! Accordingly, I'd now like to suggest the band may have attended Elvis' midnight concert immediately following their own Las Vegas gig or that the next day Robert (and perhaps JPJ & Bonzo) attended Elvis' 8:15pm concert while Jimmy was in NYC for the day working on 'Led Zeppelin II' before flying back to rejoin the group in Los Angeles.

  20. Thanks for posting these photos, Steve. It looks beautiful. I will be visiting Loch Ness this summer and I hope to get a peek at the environs.

A visit to Loch Ness is sheer bliss! An abundance of tranquility to be found if you know where to look. Boleskine House itself is much more accessible nowadays, in fact it has been operating as a bed and breakfast of late. Also be sure to visit Foyers Falls and Urquart Castle.

  21. I still think it was a live simulcast, was it not?

Still looking into it, but it's highly unlikely to have been a live simulcast. Performances on Superstars in Concert, among others, were always pre-recorded and then edited down to fit the program format (length), to include commercial breaks, etc.

  22. I remember The Firm covering Willie Dixon's "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" as one of the encores on the '86 tour.....pretty rip-roaring version too. Did they ever cover anything else ?

I think that was the only cover and it was performed multiple times on the tour.

Did any of the singles have any b-sides that weren't released on the two albums ?

There are some 78 rpm (12") singles which do:

'Radioactive' (special extended remix) b/w 'Radioactive' (album version)

PR 714 Atlantic USA Promo with Picture Sleeve

'Tear Down The Walls' b/w 'Live In Peace' (Live)

    PR 894 Atlantic USA Promo

Note: Live tracks sourced from soundboard for Hammersmith Odeon 12/9/84

'Radioactive' (special mix) & 'Together' b/w 'City Sirens' (live) & 'Live In Peace' (live)

A9586TE Atlantic UK with Picture Sleeve

Note: Live tracks sourced from soundboard for Hammersmith Odeon 12/9/84

'Radioactive' (crunch mix) b/w 'City Sirens' (Live) & 'Live In Peace' (Live)

    786 905-0 Germany

Note: Live tracks sourced from soundboard for Hammersmith Odeon 12/9/84

I'm aware of 14 different 45 rpm singles and 16 different 78 rpm singles.

Steve....Do you have a studio timeline ? If those articles are accurate, I'm getting the impression that most of the second album was recorded with the first.

Jimmy and Paul began to rehearse at Nomis Studios in London in Sept '84, and group rehearsals began when they were joined by Tony Franklin and then Chris Slade. They were booked as The McGregors, a nod to Jimmy's occult interests.

Within a month or so Jimmy and Paul pre-booked all of their studio time (two months) at Jimmy's Sol Studio in Cookham, Berkshire, thus imposing a working deadline to meet. It

was there that a photo shoot was held for promotional purposes.

Roy Harper stopped by in October, and he happened to be severely gnat-bitten LOL.

He and Jimmy took off to perform 'Hangman' and 'Same Old Rock' near Scafell Pike for

an Olde Grey Whistle Test telecast on BBC which originally aired 11/5/84, the same day

Jimmy was fined in the Royal Crown Court for a second cocaine possession charge back

in September. He could have faced a prison sentence, but it was known the upcoming tour would fill the Inland Revenue Service' coffers so leniency was granted.

I do show The Firm recorded the promo video for 'Radioactive' with producer Aubrey Powell in NYC on 10/12/85 and three more in one day with Aubrey - 'All The Kings Horses', 'Live In Peace' and 'Tear Down The Walls' - on 12/12/85 but nothing more

concerning studio time for the second album. I shall have to look into this further,

but it would seem studio time was booked in Autumn '85 for the second album.

As you know, Jimmy rehearsed with Robert & JPJ in Bath (Jan '86) soonafter and The

Firm disbanded following a brief North American tour to promote the release of 'Mean

Business'. In November 1986 Jimmy issued a press release announcing he was leaving The Firm to begin a solo album.
