...it's still back of my mind, to see when and where Jimmy Page Met P. Ravi Shankar, circa art school days '63 before G. Harrison/Shankar meeting Summer 1967... a mystery question posed by Steve A. Jones here to the fans..

Fed up with police action, Mumbai's 1st gay bar shuts its doors

Iconic bar Voodoo where Led Zeppelin gave an impromptu performance in 1972 has been closed for the past 2 months after a police raid.

    June 09, 2012

    Mumbai

    Varun Singh

The name Voodoo has been synonymous with modern Mumbai, a city that had accepted and embraced the word ‘gay’ even before the Delhi High Court read down Section 377 of the IPC to decriminalise homosexual acts between consenting adults. But since March 30, the iconic nightclub where the famous rock band Led Zeppelin once gave an impromptu performance has not opened its doors for the public. The Colaba watering hole and discotheque, which stood as a symbol of the composite culture of a city that does not practice discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, has not opened since a police raid on it in March. The police claimed after the raid that they had busted a prostitution racket at Voodoo. Now, patrons of Voodoo from the LGBT community fear the nightclub might never open its doors again.

Despite the rumours about the pub not opening again, every Saturday people from the LGBT community make their way to the landmark joint in the hope of finding it open, but so far they have been disappointed — their old uncle is not around to welcome them in anymore. Sources from within the LGBT community squarely blame the raid on Voodoo for the setback their nightlife has received.

    We’ll be back

Confirming the pub is currently shut, a spokesperson for Voodoo said there was no way anybody was going to kill the spirit of Mumbai and the pub was determined to be back in business soon. “We won’t let Mumbai’s happiness be suppressed by anyone,” the spokesperson said. “We will soon open the doors, we have shut it down for renovation. After the raid, we decided that we should renovate the pub as we have got the time to do it now. We haven’t renovated the place for 10 years now.”

Many people have fond memories of the iconic nightclub, and one of them is Sidharth Bhatia, a renowned author who remembers Voodoo as a place that opened its doors for any and every body. “In the early 70s, they had an entry fee of Rs 5 and anyone could enter. Earlier, they played recorded music, but soon they started live music and it was the place for the youngster to be,” Bhatia said. “I hope it (Voodoo) doesn’t shut down. For that matter, in the current policing scenario, I just hope that no nightclub shuts,” he said. According to the LGBT community, in the early 90s, Voodoo opened its doors for them when many other places were keeping them out. They say the discotheque in the recent past lost its glory with the advent of new places for the LGBT community to enjoy.

    Disappointed

Vikram Phukan, former editor, Bombay Dost, claims that while Voodoo would have to find a mention when writing the history of the queer community, it has now lost its glory. “Voodoo at one point of time was the place for the LGBT community, but now things have changed. There are many options available for the queer community. However, no night club should be shut and, definitely, Voodoo shouldn’t be shut,” he said. Another gay, who is a regular at the club, said, “Every time I pass the Radio Club road and see the shutters of Voodoo down, it reminds of the killing of Mumbai’s nightlife. I remember the place as a pub where I and my friends used to go regularly. I have made many friends here; during the early years when I was exploring my sexuality, I realised I do have many others like me to be with.”

    One evening in 1972

Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were in Mumbai in 1972 and one day visited Voodoo (then called Slip Disc), reportedly to see if it could offer some excitement after other discotheques had left them disappointed.

Walking in with their manager Richard Cole, they must have been moved deeply by what they saw and heard at Slip Disc, which was once described as the only real discotheque east of the Suez, for they decided to give an impromptu performance with the local musicians present. The well-known Nandu Bhende, an aspiring rocker at the time, was among those present, having rushed to Colaba upon learning of the visit by the members of the famous British rock band.

The raid that did it in

ACP Vasant Dhoble, an officer who has earned the sobriquet of Bar Raider because of his habit of turning up unannounced at late-night hot spots and sending everybody present into spasms of fear, led a team of the Social Service branch of the police in a raid on Voodoo on March 30. The police claimed they busted a prostitution racket at Voodoo and said they rescued eight women from the flesh trade. They said four of the women were Germans. The nightclub hotly contested the claim, saying the German women were just customers. The police ended up booking the cashier, bouncer and waiter on the premises under various sections of Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act. Voodoo never recovered from the setback, and remains shut to this day.

  3. They really are beautiful and clear there. Absolutely breathtaking. It seems a shame to ever post another picture after that one, but I like how here you can also see the green-ness again, though not as clear.

Gloria, the petite girl on the right, was a former ballet dancer who married Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant in 1962.

No other details are known so I'm seeking any further information. I suspect she is wearing a wig and it could be have been staged by film director Peter Clifton circa Autumn 1974, with Clifton's wife on the left.

    ...Probably known already, but here is excerpt/"Trampled Underfoot" directly from the Very Lovely Glora Grant;

  5. Hello fellow zep fans, thanks for sharing your lovely photos, all of you so brave and kind to share your photographs;

Achi, so happy that you got to witness The Rock God, our very own Robert Plant!!

your language of friendship and love is just perfect, understood, and that is all that matters..

Your Country and Language are both very beautiful...

  6. I was looking online and I found this German website with some pictures I'd never seen before - but I couldn't click on them so they're quite tiny. Here's a couple:

I emailed the website to see if I could buy the first 1972 picture, but they never replied after I told them the site wasn't working for me.

Does anybody have any of these photos in HD?

...Not sure which site you tried, but do try this link/Info.

you can purchase here...search Jimmy Page for above and more photos...

  7. My thanks to Sam Cutler and yourself for the assistance. The game is afoot.

...SAJ, interesting mystery nevertheless, I reviewed the Tiimeline Press for Montreal for any possible representation, Montreal Gazette has very warmly and graciously replied:

Here is their warm response: The Editor Writes:

"I'm a huge Zep fan, too, and I also worked with Herb Aronoff in the '70s. I can't say with certainty that the picture is Herb, because when I knew him, he had short hair. However, it could be him. I'll dig around a bit and see if I can reach him."

    I have sent this link for any update;

Montreal Zeppelin '70 Promoter Donald K. Donald does not resemble the archival photo thus far...

  8. Not to my knowledge. It's unlikely as it was a summer festival being headlined by The Grateful Dead. Besides, Led Zeppelin already played their Canadien dates in the Spring.

..Thanks SAJ for this logical explanation, Zeppelin back in UK end of June for Bath Festival, and dates for Festival Express are end of June/beginning of July:

    Festival Express Dates...

    http://www.thecoolgroove.com/gsb_festivalxpress.html

on this note, the Man Pop Festival was played by Zep ofcourse, August 29, 1970/WPG and I also hear from an Man-Pop attendee here that John Lennon was contacted for this festival, but refused...

anyway, thanks for informative reply as always..

  9. ^^^

Possibly taken April 14, 1970 at Montreal Airport as Led Zeppelin was enroute to Ottawa or April 15, 1970 enroute to Evansville, IN. Wouldn't have been during Led Zeppelin's arrival in Montreal (April 13th) because though Jimmy was wearing the same coat he had on sneakers. The Rolling Stones were not on tour at this time, but Sam Cutler may have been in Montreal to coordinate the Festival Express tour for The Grateful Dead (among others):

You Can't Always Get What You Want

    IMG_2445.jpg

Ex-groupies, start slobbering: It's not often that Jimmy Page (pictured with Sam Cutler), Richard Cole, the 'infamous' ex-tour manager of Led Zeppelin, Tom Salter ex-manager of the Grateful Dead, the legendary rock manager Danny Secunda, Jeff Dexter, the ex manager of America and Andrew King, the manger, formerly of Blackhill Enterprises, who managed the Pink Floyd and Ian Drury are clustered together in one room.

But this group of Music Industry figures were just some of the glamorous guests at Sam Cutler's launch for his You Can't Always Get What You Want launch at Beach Blanket Babylon last night.

Sam's lucidly written autobiography about his days as a tour manager for the Stones and the Dead was first published in Australia before being republished by ECW Press a Canadian publisher for the USA market.

Thanks to Sam's extensive Media saturated book launch in the States, his tome is already a bestseller. And one of the guests at the launch told me he's even going to translate the book into French.

Also at this exciting book launch were a sea of glamorous old faces paying homage to Sam Cutler, including Gregory Sams, Zelda Chesterfield (pictured with Sam Cutler) and journalist and writer Danae Brook also pictured with Sam (one of her scoops was breaking the story about Diana's engagement to Charles).

Robin Marchesi, the poet changed the batteries of my camera halfway through the evening. And I was also treated to an impromptu cabaret from the chanteuse/songwriter Holly Penfield who belted out a song before departing for her late night gig.

    ....Thank you for this update.....

here is a photo of Monteral Airport 1970...similar board signs perhaps....

Was Led Zeppelin ever pursued for Festival Express? I cannot remember this, any references by Sam Cutler?

  10. AEN, tks for posting these photos, I was thinking about this memorable union as no doubt many other fans were, who remember particularly that era...

They both look at ease with each other...although makes me wonder sometimes how hard it is to pose for such pictures, since the originals surfaced the internet for decades now...perhaps earth and sky came together crashingly, when they met in modern era just like this once again...

  11. I know we are supposed to behave in this thead -- but that picture nearly killed me tonight.

...AEn, Bay65..we are in Hot Pic's Thread, so right place it is...it is a beautiful photo...but Jimmy and Scarves...that is a deadly combo'

I think he captured the spirit of this Scarf..."The Scarf" here and above naturally swaying with his tall lanky frame...Poetry in Motion, without doubt...

He is beautiful and Healthy, thankful for such wonderful discussions about our Idol...

    http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu141/planetPage_bucket/jimmypagescarf.jpg]http://jimmypagescarf.jpg

.... and his famous '75 Blue Polka Dot Scarf has reincarnted in modern elegance as dotted shiny stars on Black..

  12. Great to see Jimmy rocking another of those scarves !

...This is it!! No one can do it like Jimmy!! I am sure fellow Pagettes Bayougla65, AEN, and all would agree...

I am not so keen on Jimmy in Ties, right from the Knebworth photo shoot to date...He does look elegant as Star can be, it's just not him...

The Scarf is his prized accessory, compliments his sensitive angelic outlook...but either way he does look beautiful, as expected of course!!

  13. Mini-Zoso, I am really sorry to have read this. My best to you and your family through this difficult time. I have no further words to express. Sometimes words aren't enough, but I hope these find you well.

...Yes, LZ Music is great, fans do come together over their music, it's true...

    For Mini-Zoso...

Rock Historian, I am glad that fans are being so caring...

  14. I lost my Dad this morning.

Sorry for the downer folks, but after coming to this site for a couple of years now it was the first place I could think of at this time of the morning. I know some of you have gone through what I am going through right now. Not wanting you to re-live it though, I apologise for that.

    Isn't Led Zeppelin great?

...Mini -Zoso, glad that you thought of your fellow fans here to share your loss, likewise, I extend warm regards to you and your loved ones, caring and humanity has nothing to do with whether you know someone or not...it is what it is, it cannot be anything else...Peace and Content.....

  15. This is consistent with what I believe to be the facts too. Enrolled in Sutton Art College circa Sept '60 after having left Neil Christian and the Crusaders following a bad bout of glandular fever. Tenure at art college also lasted about 18 months, but he continued to

be involved in music during this time, for example rehearsing with Cyril Davies and Nicky Hopkins for Davies band (Jimmy declined to join), accompanying beat poet Royston Ellis on accoustic guitar, and listening to records at home with Albert Lee. Jimmy developed

an affinity for Lee's sound (Gibson Les Paul Custom with Supro Amp) and bought a Supro of his own in 1961. Jeff and Jimmy were friends in art college, but attended different schools.

I found some information on this mystery, but not too strong backing for the focus of the mystery, what year? here is the reply on May 25, 2012...

Message from Research Staff at SCOLA Art College, formerly Sutton...

"Thanks for your recent emails regarding Jimmy Pages time at College in Sutton, Surrey. I have been doing some research recently regarding the college as it is our 40th year as a college. Since 1972 the college has been known as SCOLA (Sutton College of Liberal Arts 1972-2001, Sutton College of Learning for adults 2001-present) but prior to that it was a school, known as Sutton Liberal Arts school and also Sutton & Cheam School of Arts & crafts! (These are two of the names I have found it referred to!)

The only information I have found about Jimmy Page from his time at the school was that he enrolled in 1963 through to 1964 and he did a “Basic Arts course”. The Principle at this time was Mr Edward S Bulley. This was situated at Throwley Road until 1969 when it was demolished and moved to Stowford School on the Brighton Rd Sutton.

I have looked at the archives in the Sutton Library for student records but they don’t seem to have any sadly!

I am still in the process of researching the college and its origins, so if I do come up with any further information for you, I will let you know as soon as I find any."

Jimmy's Art Professor Clairmonte obituary article, Sutton Art College Originally was as you also known likely was posted in this Forum by ZISH, I think at least..

Link to Jimmy's Original Art College:

Here is that article about Morocco that AEN scanned just today, Jimmy indicating that he could not go to Morrocco because he was in Art School, so perhaps age could be little clearer?
