Drive-By Truckers

Recommended Posts

My friend is a huge Drive-By Truckers fan. I have been a little more reticent about getting into them...some of it I like, other stuff, not so much. Did enjoy the record they did with Bettye LaVette, "The Scene of the Crime".

Believe it or not I still don't own that one or the one they did with Booker T., Potato Hole. I pretty much like all of their records but prefer the early stuff. I like the new one much more than anything they've done in a long time. As much as they tout the "Muscle Shoals Sound" I think this one comes to closest to really showcasing that influence. If you haven't seen The Secret To A Happy Ending documentary I highly recommend it. It gives a pretty well rounded view of the Truckers, their background and their community of fans.

By the way, Jahfin, can you tell me how you post youtube videos here where the image shows up and not just the url link?

By the way, I'll be seeing the Drive-By Truckers for the first time as they are playing the legendary Troubadour club this monday, March 7...that is a very INTIMATE venue...capacity is less than 150...tix were $25.

Yo Jahfin, I'm listening to Isbell's new album. It's pretty sweet so far. I feel like you're all on this album.

I've heard quite a bit of it but have yet to buy it. Still need to pick that one up as well as the latest from Steve Earle, Emmylou and The Baseball Project.

Cool interview with Cooley here despite the fact that the interviewer is completely fucking clueless:

Happy 15th Anniversary to the Drive-By Truckers!

Here's the latest from Patterson on all their current goings on:

Y'ALL:

Hope everyone's summer is going safe and well.

Hope your AC ain't broke.

I'm packing (again) for our upcoming Go-Go Boots June Tour.

Kicking off tonight in the heat of our beloved Richmond VA for a show at Brown's Island http://www.brownsisland.com/

Today, Friday June 10th, is DBT's 15th Anniversary!

We formed, played together for first time, and recorded 5 songs at Andy Baker's old studio (house) in 1996.

We recorded our 45 (Bulldozers and Dirt / Nine Bullets), the version of Margo and Harold that is on PD and earlier versions of Zoloft and Careless.

I brought pizza and beer and we all had so much fun we decided to play a few shows and see what happens.

Next its up to Jersey for a show at the Wellmont Theater http://www.wellmonttheatre.com/ with our dear friend (and one of our favorite artists) Alejandro Escovedo http://www.alejandroescovedo.com/.

It's been several years and a new album since we've played with him and we're most excited.

Then to Buffalo NY and up into Canada for several shows including a show at The Phoenix in Toronto and a festival date with Bachman and Turner http://saugeensummernights.ca.

(The second LP I ever bought was BTO-2 back when I was in fourth grade. "Let It Ride!"

When we return to The States, we will be playing Pete Seeger's Clearwater Festival on June 19th http://www.clearwaterfestival.org/

The ticket discount code for Clearwater's Festival in Croton-on-Hudson, NY on 6/18-6/19 has been extended until 6/17. Code is 'patterson'. Get 1/2 price tickets when you use this code!

If you're attending Clearwater on the 18th, make sure you check out The Low Anthem.

Their new album is amazing and one of my favorite releases of the year. I'm bummed to be missing them this time around but having just seen them last month I can promise they're a fantastic band.

Then down to NYC to perform on the Late Show with David Letterman, be sure to tune in on June 21 to catch us performing one of our songs that was specially requested by Dave, we can't wait!

We will end this run back in Asheville NC for a two night stand at The Orange Peel http://theorangepeel.net/.

Opening acts for those shows will be our friends in Bloodkin (24th) and the Futurebirds (the 25th).

We toured with The Futurebirds back in January and have been dying to take them out again.

Bloodkin just completed a four disc Box Set spanning their entire 5 year history and it's stunning.

TOUR DATES: http://drivebytruckers.com/shows.html

We are thrilled to announce that our documentary The Secret to a Happy Ending http://www.thesecrettoahappyending.com is premiering Saturday, June 11th at 8:00pm ET/PT on the Documentary Channel http://www.documentarychannel.com

Also, on Saturday, July 30th, DBT will be headlining the annual WC Handy Music Festival http://www.wchandymusicfestival.org in my hometown of Florence AL.

The Handy Festival has been happening for around thirty years (I used to volunteer and help out when I was in High School) and this is the first time we've ever been asked to appear. The show is at Norton Auditorium (where once upon a time Adam's House Cat blew Night Ranger off the stage) and this show will most certainly sell out.

The opening act is none other than my Dad's band The Decoys and for this special show they are augmented by Donnie Fritts and Spooner Oldham**.

I'll then be heading back to my beautiful Athens GA for The Grand Opening of The Georgia Theatre http://www.georgiatheatre.com/index.html

As you may remember it burned down back in 2009 and the rebuilding has been a slow painful process but it looks like it's going to be a stunning room and we are so excited to finally have it back. The Grand Opening will be a two week shindig kicking off with The Glands, who in 2000 made my favorite album of that entire decade and haven 't played but one time in nearly a decade. The Festivities will continue with dates from Big Boi and Gillian Welch and of course DBT.

We will be playing a two night stand on August 12 and 13 and tickets are selling extremely fast so order yours NOW http://drivebytruckers.com/shows.html

(Support for The GA Theatre shows will be announced soon and trust me, it's a doozy).

Finally, I'd like to mention that I am playing two very rare (these days) solo shows on July 4th weekend.

July 2nd, I will be in Waverly AL at The Standard Deluxe Compound for an intimate outdoor show and BBQ.

I've been wanting to play one of those for some time and am thrilled to finally get a chance. Civil Wars recently did one and I've heard nothing but raves about it.

Then on July 3rd, I will be playing solo in Athens GA at The Melting Point as part of the 3rd annual Classic City American Music Festival.

I will be playing both shows alone and Melting Point is one of the best sounding acoustic venues I've ever played so it should be stellar.

Back to packing, but I look forward to seeing you soon at The Rock Show.

See You at The Go-Go.

Patterson Hood

Hey Jahfin:

The band is playing in London Ontario on Tues eve.... http://www.londonmusichall.com/

Sorry I can't go ..hope they are well-received by the city and have a good crowd....

Thanks for the heads up. Too bad you're unable to make it.

I will be checking them out on Wed for the first time, looking forward to it.

Cool, anxious to know what you think (good or bad). The last time I saw them they were definitely playing at the top of their game.

Just read where they're going to be on the Late Show with David Letterman on June 21st performing their cover of Eddie Hinton's "Everybody Needs Love" (which Dave personally requested).

So pretty much they kicked all kinds of ass Wed night. I had high hopes going in and it was well exceeded. I was pretty surprised by the relatively low turnout, figured they would've brought out a few more people, although it was Game 7 of the Cup Finals so perhaps that's what held people back. Either way, I got a primo spot and had a blast.

Glad you had a good time and thanks for the report. I haven't seen them on this tour but am looking forward to their performance during the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh in September. From all I've read, they're going to be taking an extended hiatus after this tour wraps up. They definitely deserve it as they've been touring pretty much non-stop since they first formed in 1998.

I saw them last night on Letterman. They are good. They remind me of some of the obscure bands from the 60's.

B)

The new album (Go-Go Boots) is a huge nod to the "Muscle Shoals Sound". They've hinted at it and acknowledged it many times before but this record is the first time they've really employed that sound to such great effect themselves. Frontman Patterson Hood's Dad is renown Muscle Shoals bassist David Hood so he (and the rest of the Drive-By Truckers, who are are residents of the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama, except for keyboardist Jay Gonzales and drummer Brad Morgan) come by their appreciation of that sound honestly. The tune they covered last night, "Everybody Needs Love", is by the late Eddie Hinton. They wrote a song about him, "Sandwiches for the Road", that appeared on their first album, Gangstabilly and have acknowledged his influence at nearly every turn throughout their career.
