Strider Posted October 18, 2011 Share Posted October 18, 2011 Horrific...wasn't watching the race, but I saw the crash and heard the news on ESPN after the football game. Death is a spectre that hangs over every driver, which separates racing from other sports that are merely games. It's always sad to lose someone so young, and who leaves a wife and young kids behind. But what's really troubling about this, from what I've read and heard so far, is that there were doubts and misgivings about racing on the Las Vegas track from the getgo...something about the banks being too high. Dan Wheldon's death is tragic...it would be even more tragic if the powers-that-be of racing ignore the input and interests of their drivers in their chasing of the TV dollar. This was Danica's last race, since she will be driving full-time in NASCAR next year and that is/was their marqee driver. They tried to put too many cars (a record 34) on a track that is too narrow and short for them. Indy cars need more room because they cannot touch each other or else you will get what we saw on Sunday - projectile cars. They juiced up the money involved (Wheldon was driving for a possible $5,000,000 winner's purse) in hopes to increase t.v. ratings and wanted a bigger market to help with making more of a stir for the league's final race of the season.
