vernieb
I came across the pic and sent it to The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petrsburg, FL. They sent me the details on it. It is not a stretch to assume that Storm Thorgerson at Hipgnosis would have been a fan of surrealist art.
SteveAJones
It's plausible but to my knowledge no one at Hipgnosis or in the band has claimed that it is, so we may never know for certain.

SteveZ98
According to this Rolling Stone article, Aubrey Powell came up with the idea, and it was based on the monolith in the 2001 movie (the section on Presence is about two thirds of the way down): https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/hipgnosis-life-in-15-album-covers-pink-floyd-led-zeppelin-and-more-110213/

I recall this now. I have a great radio interview from the week of June 7, 1976 called Earth News. It features Plant and Bonham (separately) and each discusses the album in-depth. The host speculates as to what The Object may symbolize (society breaking down among other suggestions).
porgie66
Well the idea of the Object may have been inpired by 2001 , but the physical style of it definitely is more resemblant of the Dali drawing. The twist. Edited February 3, 2021 by porgie66
