Jimmy said it was a two-album contract. He issued a press release in November 1986 that he was leaving The Firm to begin work on a solo album. He once said that touring with Paul was like touring with his grandmother. People can take from that what they will.

The one time JP fulfilled his promise of a solo album. Not like today, when he keeps saying in interviews of the new material he's working on. The record keeps spinning and just lift the needle!

We got there early, parked nearby and waited in line before the gates opened to get our seats, watched a great opening set (approximately 30 or so minutes of JD McPherson’s band). Then, as the sky darkened, RP & Allison Krauss were on stage (But for only 4 songs), when another person made an announcement for everyone to quickly but safely make their way to a covered area away from the venue. There were bad storms approaching quickly. We raced to the car and drive north (home). I didn’t get to see the merch table nor a complete concert. I wish they’d offer a rescheduled Atlanta concert  (Makeup date this Fall / after their European leg) for those of us who’ve waited 5 years for RP. Disappointed... 4 songs 😂

That really stinks. I hope they reschedule it as they are returning in the Fall. Nothing you can do about the weather, just bad timing. Glad you enjoyed what you saw and J.D. who is phenomenal. You were one song short of the firt LZ song of the show which is a reworked version of RNR.

  3. I went to the Philly show on Sunday and I thought it was much better than the show I saw back in 2008 in NYC. The two of them feed so well off each other and it was much more of a rocking. That's what happens when you add J.D. McPherson to the band. He's phenomenal and from Tulsa, OK. He was also the opening act. He did his own stuff plus Iggy's "Lust For Life." The crowd was really into both his and Robert's and Alison's set. "Battle of Evermore" was epic.

Here's a few clips from the show. Not filmed by me.

The below includes a bit on the fiddle by Alison and "Friends."

  4. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss two days ago in Philly at The Mann Center. Great show and I thought they were much better than when I saw them in 2008 on their Raising Sand tour. It definitely rocked more. Opener J.D. McPherson was also great and is also the lead guitarist for Robert and Alison's band. Not often the opener is also part of the main act as well.

Saw the show tonight, Incredible. 6 songs from Raising Sand, 11 songs from Raise The Roof, Then rock and Roll, Battle Of Evermore, and an incredible When The Levee Breaks

That's awesome. But, hoping for a couple more LZ songs then just three of them. I'm from the NYC area but won't be seeing them at Forest Hills this weekend but in Philly the following weekend. We have six of us going and should be a fun weekend!

I was kind of surprised "South Bound Saurez" came in above "Fool in the Rain".

That is strange. They did these countdowns often on the NYC rock stations for Memorial Day weekend and 4th of July as well. I enjoyed these. Some rock stations still do these, even though much of the countdown is the same with a few additions like REM, U2, Metallica among them.

If you like the Stoke 73 version, check out Bradford from that tour, played a few nights later 1/18/73. It's their best night of the tour imho. Robert struggles a bit in the beginning but then warms up really nicely. It's not an easy listen in terms of audio, but with decent headphones it's worth the investment!

I have that show and agree it's a bit rough.

  8. Lot of votes for 6/21/1977. My personal fave as well. Jimmy is playing great and Bonzo is insane. Love Bonzo's drum intro and Jimmy's chords before it begins. Love the break just before "Sing out Hare, Hare" with JP and JB. It's a killer part of this version. Many other great versions from MSG in 73, Japan 1972 as well as Offenburg and Stoke in 73.

Who knows why Robert agrees to some things and not to others? It's all conjecture and speculation until he comes out and says something unequivocal about it himself. In contrast, Jimmy's given a clear explanation for why it didn't happen in the past (Robert vetoed the idea) and has said that he's not going to even try to release archive recordings if Robert's going to veto them again. Jimmy's not averse to spinning a yarn (how many times has he been doing a solo album and playing live 'next year'?), but it's notable that Robert's never contradicted Jimmy on this topic. He's snarked at him in the press over other things, but never this. That's circumstantial, though, I guess - I don't think anyone's ever asked him outright if he's blocking any more live stuff and,  if so, why.
You could compare their contrasting attitudes in 2018 when Jimmy seemed to be enthusiastic about finding a new multitrack live recording and releasing stuff over the next ten years - whereas Robert was quite disparaging about it and dismissed it with 'There's a lot of stuff rolling around. It's a bit like water in the bottom of a paddle boat.' When Jimmy was later asked why nothing was released in the end, he said 'the band don't all agree, so there's no point.' It may not be a smoking gun, but I think it's fairly clear from their individual responses who wants to release more live recordings and who doesn't agree.

This is probably why not much was done for the 50th anniversary of the band. Perhaps, Jimmy wanted to release stuff but since all were probably not in agreement, it didn't happen. Just a guess.

Great topic. For me it's 4/27/69, no question. Just a stellar performance, plus a bunch of songs that were never officially released, including a stunning version of As Long As I Have You. I really wish this was the show Jimmy included as the bonus for the remaster of the first album. Even though it's famous for a bootleg, there are still tons of casual Zep fans who have never heard it who would have been blown away by it like we all are.

Classic show and one of my all time faves. One of the first bootleg shows I heard.
