  1. Just because I'm a Zeppelin fan it doesn't mean heavier music is the only kind I like. Not to mention, at least one third of their catalog is acoustic. That said, I was never the biggest fan of the Cars but I don't hate them either. Back when they first came out a lot of the edgier type bands coming out of the New Wave scene didn't stand a chance on commercial radio but the Cars did. At the time their sound was very refreshing and very different from the norm. Unfortunately Classic Rock Radio has played their songs into the ground, causing many folks to never give them a fair chance. Despite the fact they released several albums, Classic Rock Radio pretty much only sticks to the first two.
  2. In regards to the thread on the old board, if memory serves, it quickly devolved into discussion of his latter day albums which very few seemed to be all that fond of. I've only seen Santana in concert twice (Woodstock '94 and on tour with Dylan) and they were very good both times. ...and, speaking of Schon and Shrieve, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this album:
  3. Definitely one of my favorite covers.
  4. I've been meaning to pick up some of these for a while such as Neko, the Silos and the Larry Brown tribute so the Garage Sale Bloodshot Records is having provided the perferct opportunity. All of these (and more) are available for 6 bucks a pop: www.http://bloodshotrecords.com/merch
  5. It won Video of the Year at the VMAs that year. When they went to speak to Neil live via satellite there was no sound.
  6. Speaking of Neil covers Uncut recently did a cover story on Neil, enclosed with the issue was Like A Hurricane: A Tribute To Neil Young. One of the covers is a blistering version of Mr. Soul by Patty Hurst Shifter which you can hear at their MySpace site below. It's also available on their very excellent Fugitive Glue EP. http://www.myspace.com/pattyhurstshifter The entire tracklist for Like A Hurricane: 1. Sonic Youth - Computer Age 2. Patty Hurst Shifter - Mr Soul 3. Paul Weller - Birds 4. The Waco Brothers - Revolution Blues 5. Carrie Rodriguez - Cortez The Killer ( With Tim Easton) 6. Dream Syndicate - Cinnamon Girl 7. The Walkabouts - On The Beach 8. Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 9. The Wailin' Jennys - Old Man 10. The Flaming Lips - After The Goldrush 11. Kid Lang - Helpless 12. The Be Good Tanyas - For The Turnstiles 13. The Alarm - Rockin' In The Free World 14. Cowboy Junkies - Tired Eyes 15. Low / Dirty Three - Down By The River 16. Jay Farrar - Like A Hurricane
  7. As is Lord of the Thighs. Those two songs are what make that album worth owning. Sorta like Kings and Queens from Draw the Line. I pretty much gave up the ship after Night in the Ruts, their last decent record (but it was no Rocks, their last excellent album).
  8. I mentioned this fella in another thread because of the rather unorthodox way he plays slide; using a butterknife. Read all about Cedell Davis here: http://www.fatpossum.com/artists/cedell.html
  9. Presence is my favorite Led Zeppelin record. Different strokes for different folks...
  10. I'm pretty sure they did, Oh Well (by Fleetwood Mac) was also in there. Perry never got enough credit? He's only on nearly every "Greatest/Best Guitarist" list I've ever seen. Not to even mention the number of guitar-related magazines he's been on the cover of. Now, someone like Danny Gatton or Rory Gallagher, there's a couple of guitarists you rarely ever hear about but Perry? I don't think so. I love all of those records but also favor Rocks. It's the sound of Aerosmith coming into their own.
  11. From what I understand they could be pretty shitty in concert back when they were all hopped up on drugs and alcohol. When they went straight the albums started to suck and their live shows improved dramatically. Go figure. Even though I've been a fan since the early days I never saw them live until the Get A Grip Tour in the 90s. While I don't care for the vast majority of their new material their live show did kick ass.
  12. I would say those books really weren't all that informative then.
  13. When I saw KWS several years ago on a bill with the Nuge and ZZ Top he was backed by Double Trouble. Not a bad show but it seems he spent a great deal of time showboating to tunes like Voodoo Chile. While he's definitely a good guitarist I didn't see where he was breaking any new ground. That's where the blues can be a little restrictive but there are folks out there pushing the boundaries such as the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Corey Harris, the North Mississippi All-Stars, the late Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside.
  14. Thanks for clarifying, I somehow got the impression that you were a big Janis fan and were well versed in her history. As for the Grateful Dead, you really need to fix that.
  15. I consider myself a pretty big Grateful Dead fan and I can't think of one negative story about Pigpen off the top of my head. To my knowledge he was always well regarded not only by his bandmates but by Dead fans as well. Maybe you're thinking of the Peanuts character. I heard he was a real ass to Peppermint Patty on more than one occasion.
  16. Probably my least favorite Thin Lizzy song, not to mention one that Classic Rock radio played into the fuckin' ground eons ago. Like Stairway and Freebird and many others, I could go for years without ever having to hear it again. No fault of Thin Lizzy's own but that of radio programmers who are under the misguided notion that we want to hear the same exact shit over and over again.
  17. The link to the original Aerosmith thread is just a few posts back, here it is again: http://forums.ledzeppelin.com//index.php?s...ic=2095&hl=
  18. I first heard of Gillian through a song she had on a compliation record for LEAK magazine. Then, an older brother saw her do the opening honors for Guy Clark at a show in Texas. Not long afterwards I caught her and David Rawlings on the Americana stage at MerleFest. Soon thereafter I started picking up her records and have seen her in concert at least once (ACL Fest) since then. Time (the Revelator) is not only my favorite Gillian album but one of my very favorites released so far in the 00s. I wasn't able to make it but not long ago she and David passed through here touring as The Dave Rawlings Machine where he takes the limelight and they do a wide variety of covers from everyone to Neil Young and Ryan Adams. Check out their MySpace here: The Dave Rawlings Machine
  19. I'm guessing they might be offended by Pigpen grabbing her breast. Thing is, Janis herself doesn't seem the least bit offended by it.
  20. Funny how someone that supposedly knows so much about Janis doesn't even recognise Pigpen and also doesn't know of his relationship with Janis.

  23. First I've heard of that. I always thought it was pretty well documented, especially in Going Down With Janis.
