  5. Vintage photo of the dB's who, in addition to releasing a new album this year will also be performing during SXSW in Austin this year.
  6. Thanks, I hadn't heard about the Uncle Tupelo box.
  7. This is a cut from Frontier Ruckus' new EP, Way Upstate and the Crippled Summer, Part 2 which is out now.
  8. I don't know anything about an Uncle Tupelo boxset but there is going to be a Mermaid Avenue box from Wilco and Billy Bragg that includes the first two Mermaid Avenue albums, a third disc of outtakes and a DVD of the Man in the Sand documentary about the making of the Mermaid Avenue records.
  9. I'll probably end up at this show at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh tomorrow night.
  10. Yes. Which is exactly what myself and other posters have been saying for quite some time now. The influences evident on Dreamland, Raising Sand and Band of Joy were also very evident in Led Zeppelin, particularly albums like Led Zeppelin III. Who knows? So far, there's only two dates that have been announced (at least that I'm aware of) so it's not like he's mounting a full scale tour with the Sensational Space Shifters. Prior to this he formed another new band (that also included Patty Griffin) called Crown Vic. During the last tour with Band of Joy, Plant revealed in an interview that he and Buddy Miller were writing new, original material. You never know with Plant but it would nice if that actually made the light of day at some point whether it be on tour or on a future Band of Joy (or whatever Plant choses to call it) album.
  11. I never said it wasn't an odd combination, I even mentioned Ky-Mani Marley as the opening act for their previous tour as an example. As for the diversity Bill Graham brought to the rosters he put together, my original statement apparently wasn't clear enough for you so I clarified further by saying I meant the Winterland shows (as well as other venues where he booked the artists) so that you would understand that I wasn't referring to festivals specifically. I always thought that was a very admirable trait regarding Bill Graham. Even as strange as some of those bills may seem in 2012, it still makes sense to see artists as diverse as the Grateful Dead, Sun Ra and Miles Davis all on the same bill. Even the Dead paired with the Who may have seemed strange to some even though they were both rock n' roll bands.
  12. Apparently you weren't aware of that since you mentioned festivals. Strangest bill I've ever seen: Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band w/the Spinners and Nantucket during Apple Chill Weekend in Chapel Hill in 1978.
  13. I wasn't referring to festivals. I was referring to concerts he put on at Winterland and similar venues.
  14. Yes, you can. If you were to look at my vinyl collection you would not only find all of the albums I've purchased over the years (save for a handful that I've lost along the way) but you would also find selections from my parents collection, my sister's collection and odd and ends I've acquired from friends who wanted to get rid of their vinyl as well as various records I picked up from radio stations I worked at over the years. I also have a copy of Jimmy Buffett's A White Sportcoat and A Pink Crustacean which has a girl's number and address scribbled on it by one of my older brothers. It was his girlfriend at the time so, rather than leaving me a note, he wrote it on the back of my album so I would have his contact info. It's not something I was too happy about then or now but it also tells a story about at least one of the records from my collection and takes me back to a certain time and place in my life. In that sense, I'm perfectly ok with it.
  15. Both articles from Westword.com. The second one is an interview with Cooley. Drive-By Truckers' Patterson Hood on writing, recording and resting Drive-By Truckers Shy From the Sunny Side
  16. Even though it's been one of the mildest Winters on record for NC this year, I broke out the boards today for only the second time in 2012. I'm so ready for it to stay warm for good. The time change is coming this weekend which is also something to look forward to.
  17. This song could have just as easily fit in the Cover Songs thread but it's also fitting here because I probably would have never heard of Garland Jeffrerys if it wasn't for WQDR in Raleigh, NC playing this song back in the day. Garland is still going strong these days, having just released a new album last year called The King of In Between.
  18. Johnny Winter covering the Rolling Stones. http://youtu.be/GOSZZu89DGU
