  1. NEWS FLASH: Ronnie Montrose Dead at 64
  2. Having not ever read any of Hunter S. Thompson's work outside of his contributions to Rolling Stone, I was completely unfamiliar with this but doing a little legwork on the film prior to watching it certainly helped. It's not nearly as hallucinatory as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but it was just as captivating, at least to me. I've read where some thought the ending was anti-climatic. That's true to a degree but it's not as though it leaves the viewer hanging as some films do. I thought it came to a pretty logical ending. It's just that the movie takes you on such an exhilarating up to that point that you are expecting more of a crash-bang type finish. Overall, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to more films where Depp portrays Hunter. Maybe it'll even inspired to actually read some of his books one day.
  3. Thanks, this one used to get quite a bit of airplay in my house back in the day.
  4. Whether you're a Todd Snider fan or not, this clip is still worth watching to see how he handled being ripped off by another songwriter. The song in question was "Beer Run" which was made famous by Garth Brooks. Robert Earl Keen took a similar tact when one of his songs was stolen by Toby Keith.
  5. First of all, the photo has to be hosted on a website somewhere such as Photobucket. If that's the case, you highlight the URL of the photo, then cut and paste it into your post here by using the "Image" feature which will wrap the URL in the "IMG" code. To see what I'm talking about, quote my post above.
  6. I can't say the song itself is "forgotten" because I honestly don't remember it but when it comes to Johnny Winter himself, it seems he's largely been forgotten. Just not by rock n' roll radio (which in most cases these days is a fucking joke) but by such institutions as the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. I rarely ever see his name mentioned on any "best guitarists of all time" lists as well. http://youtu.be/1QLdbv8DvSY
  7. I saw them in concert back in November for the first time in close to 30 years and they're still kickin' ass.
  8. The Monkees were invented just for TV so I don't think you could have had one without the other. Same thing for the Partridge Family though I believe the Partridge Family program was inspired by the Cowsills, an actual singing group.
  9. I think the Beach Boys get plenty of credit especially when it come to albums like Pet Sounds. I don't think I've ever seen a "best albums of all time" type list that didn't include it. What probably hasn't helped their legacy has been the John Stamos years and Mike Love's reputation for being a money grubbing asshole. As for America, I was never a huge of theirs or bands like Bread but a few years ago Bobby Bare, Jr. did an EP called American Bread that saluted both bands.
  10. Unless I missed something I'm pretty sure Moe Tucker is still alive.
  11. They were often referred to as "the Black Led Zeppelin". By the way, the lyrics to "Mickey's Monkey", a song originally made famous by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, were written by the famous Motown songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. The music is quite obviously an homage to Led Zeppelin and was never intended to be perceived as a rip-off of "Custard Pie". I imagine if the members of Zeppelin had of seen it that way, they would have sued for songwriting royalties. I also find it somewhat ironic that someone would accuse Mother's Finest of blatantly lifting riffs from another artist, especially when that other artist is Led Zeppelin. Mother's Finest were (and still are) a very originally band that were light years ahead of their time back in the 70s. They took what bands like Sly and the Family Stone were doing and made it their own by merging rock, funk and R & B in ways no one had previously imagined. They've never been recognized by the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame and most likely never will be but they were highly influential and continue to be, even in 2012.
  12. Vintage poster for Another Mother Further from the late 70s.
  13. I found that it's easier to find the results you're looking for if you use words more unique to the topic. Otherwise, you're going to get tons of hits.
  14. That's where the Search feature comes in pretty handy.
  15. It's been well covered, particularly in this thread. In case you're interested, there's also a thread about Jack Bruce's new band here.
  16. Maybe you'd be wise to take the hint from Admin that your other thread on the exact same topic was locked.
  17. A nice piece on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot from the Pop Matters website: Counterbalance No. 71: Wilco’s 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'
  18. I'm sure lots of artists have taken part in the writing process for songs they're not particularly fond of, "principal" writer or not. Bonzo's writing credit on "D'yer Mak'er" is no exception.
  19. I was at the bookstore a couple of days ago and picked up a copy of Led Zeppelin FAQ and glanced through the section where the author summarizes several Zep websites (including this one, obviously). I think the comment for the Royal Orleans site went something like, "where members sometimes get in arguments over what color Jones' socks were" at wherever they may have been playing. I see plenty of those kind of arguments here too. While on one hand, I think it's cool that some fans pay such close attention to those kinds of details while on the other, the arguments that stem from those discussions are downright silly. I think it's also rather telling how some of these same people will pontificate on shows that they weren't even at as though they're the be-all and end-all source of the most accurate information. In some cases, these so-called "Zeperts" weren't even born when Led Zeppelin roamed the earth. By the way, I'm also no expert and I've learned tons about Zep here that I've never read in magazines or books so I'm definitely appreciative of some of that sort of knowledge but oftentimes it turns into unnecessary "my dick is bigger" type of discussions which border on the ridiculous.
  20. Jackson Browne, John Sebastian, Gomez, Angelique Kidjo and David Johansen Join Rolling Stones Tribute (from JamBands.com)
  21. Pretty mild Winter here this year especially considering it probably snowed 5-6 times last year. We also had some record setting heat last summer. Speaking of extremes we've had temps ranging from the mid-70s to below freezing so far this Winter. In fact, it was just a couple of weeks ago that I was wearing shorts and sandals one day, the next day it was snowing. Meteorologists continue to exist that nothing is up with climate change. I think they're off their motherfucking rockers.
  22. The album this comes from (The Old Magic) has been out since last year but the video is new. Look for cameos from Robyn Hitchcock, Wilco and others.
