What really sucks is that the night before has a great audience source, very clear and defined. They were playing pretty damn good that night as well despite Page's issues. Too bad that dude did not attend the 10th show, or, left his equipment at home.

Oh really?  I've never bothered listening to 4/9 because of Page's issues.  Maybe I ought to check it out...

checkout MD from February.  7th 8th and 10th are really good especially the 8th. His solos were really energetic during that month.

The 10th is the only one of those three that's a soundboard, which was the point of Dirty Work's list.  It's also the only one of those that was in Maryland lol.  I like 2/10 for Bonham's performance, but I probably wouldn't pick any songs from it for a Best of '75 Soundboards compilation.  I do LOVE Bonham's fills in the last verse of "Heartbreaker" from that show though...

Ok here it is. Some I intentionally left blank, because after so much listening I couldn't come to an answer. For Dazed I'd say 3/21, and splice in the beginning of Dazed from 3/19 or 3/20 (since the sound quality and levels are the same) when Pagey's (slightly) out of tune. The Rain Song? Your guess... I'd listen more for the mellotron being in tune, but I didn't hear a bad one. They had that song pretty solid. Seems like 3/19 and 2/28 were good. Moby Dick, I can't tell, lets let a drummer decide on that one.

    Rock and Roll - 3/21

    Sick Again - 3/21

Over the Hills and Far Away - 3/19 (or 3/20, 2/13 is good, not the best sound quality)

In My Time of Dying - 3/21 (or 3/20, or 2/28, latter is HOT but feels rushed)

Since I’ve Been Loving You - 2/14 (IMO, think this spot works better than after NQ, slows things down)

The Song Remains the Same 3/3

    The Rain Song -

Kashmir - 3/21 (2/14 honorable mention and all instruments are evenly balanced, 2/28 runner up)

No Quarter - 2/28 (use a latter ’75 NQ w/ faster solo for a bonus track)

Trampled Under Foot - 2/12 (or 2/14. I found 3/5 to be a pretty cool, but sloppy, version FWIW.)

    Moby Dick -

    Dazed and Confused -

    Stairway to Heaven - 3/21

    Whole Lotta Love - 3/21

    Black Dog - 3/21

    Communication Breakdown - 3/21

    Heartbreaker - 3/21

*No Quarter (later ’75 version) - (bonus track) ?

My list before 3/21's soundboard came out was good too, don't get me wrong. Hope I still have it.

    Hope you like!

    I mostly agree.  Changes I'd make/blanks I'd fill in:

Over The Hills And Far Away - so many good choices...I'll say it's between 2/12, 3/3, 3/5 & 3/20 for me

    Since I've Been Loving You - 3/21

    The Rain Song - 3/19

No Quarter - 3/21 (could go with 3/20 as well; 3/14 would be a fun bonus track NQ)

Moby Dick - could go to either 3/3, 3/5 or 3/21; 3/3 is a bit shorter than the other two, but all three are energetic, focused and powerful

Dazed And Confused - 3/21 (the culmination of the song's evolution IMO)

Communication Breakdown - 2/13 (edges 3/21 because of Ron Wood's guest appearance and having the full song--on 3/21, Jimmy jumps into Heartbreaker before the coda)

Heartbreaker - 2/12 (Bonham's thunderous fills in this version automatically make it my #1)

Definitely overlooked some good performances. But I also found some that were worse than I thought.

And I admit I tried to pick out only the bad parts of 3/21, and I still stand by the fact that Page was slightly out of it for that show, despite the big set list and energy. I may redo that one the way I'm doing them now, but I guarantee you people will still scream foul lol.

That would be nice to be able to compare the 3/21 review to the others "apples to apples"...

Alright, you folks have to let me know. Are enough people enjoying me doing these and see them as relevant, or am I ruining people's enjoyment of the shows by over-analyzing? If so I'll stop. I know I've certainly found things that I'd missed before and learned to appreciate other things by looking more closely, but I'll keep the nitpicks to myself if they're annoying too many people.

I'm enjoying them!  My opinions aren't so fragile that reading someone else's negative review of a show I like will suddenly make me also dislike said show.  In fact, Zeppelin fans have had to deal with reading negative reviews of the band since its inception!  I never would have listened to 2/8 Philadelphia (barring the release of a SBD) had I not read your review of it, and now I love that show!  I'm also a '75 nut, so I enjoy any good '75 discussion.

Have you heard 3/19? I'm doing it currently and there's no comparison, to me anyway.

    Edit: No Quarter, that is.

Of course!  I love that one too!  There's just something about the 3/27 version I like more.  Jones & Bonham nail the piano solo and two-piece jam, and I've actually always liked Page's solo--especially the climax in the middle (somewhere around 18:00?).  That's coming from a drummer, not a guitarist, mind you...

  7. I had never listened to 3/12 carefully all the way through until recently either (because of the sound quality pre-third source appearing), and was likewise thoroughly impressed.

Not surprised that 3/24 didn't fair too well under your microscope--I've never been able to enjoy it much.

P.S.  Curious why you skipped ahead to 3/24 instead of sticking with your chronological run after your initial 3/21 review...

True, but the '73 setlist feels a lot tighter and seems to fly by much quicker, at least to me. The '75 setlist feels like an update of the '73 setlist, only with (imho) worse pacing. Having a 20-30 Moby Dick followed by a 40 minute Dazed and Confused is just way too excessive. It makes it lose momentum and it's more difficult for me personally to get through. Also, don't forget that the band occasionally skipped songs in the '73 setlist due to crowd issues or health issues. Not to mention novelties like hinting at Georgia on My Mind in Salt Lake City or playing Dazed out of order in Baltimore;)

True.  I've been trying to hear that Baltimore '73 Dazed for years!  Any chance of a PM? ;)

So I take it your goal is to listen to every '75 performance? Well, all I can say is good luck haha! Personally, I don't know if I'd be able to stand it unless I were to space it out quite a bit. The '75 shows (with the exception of the ones from January and Earls Court) all have a degree of "sameness" to them, with the setlist barely changing at all from night to night and Page and Plant being the only two who vary in terms of performance. And even then, Plant's best gigs for this year are just ones where he'd be considered "passable" to the casual listener.

I will say I hope you pull through, because I may have to revise my "best of '75" compilation based on your reviews. :)

By my calculations, the '73 North American Tour actually had the most static setlist, with the only pre-encore variation being the occasional addition of songs within "Whole Lotta Love" (i.e. 6/3 LA)--and, I suppose, the occasional omission of songs due to crowd problems (i.e. 7/20 Boston).

The three additions of "Since I've Been Loving You" alone give February & March '75 a setlist-variety edge over NA '73.  Granted, the playing as a collective was probably better/more consistent in '73...

Alltough I am not the biggest fan of 75, I really dig gibsonfan`s enjoyable & detailed analysis. Four Blocks In The Snow is one of the few 75 concerts I appreciate. Neither the SB nor the matrix will do me any good. Haha, I prefer the TCOLZ audience version, because it makes not only Page`s sound but the whole thing "demonstrably better".

Hmm, I've never tried the straight audience source.  Might have to...
