  1. We were considering QOTSA in the ATL, but tix were $95 - a little too rich for our blood just now.

Rush is making the second leg of their Time Machine Tour, but we saw the first leg, as well as both legs of Snakes and Arrows, so I'm feeling a little over-Rushed for now.

Saw Yes is touring, but Jon Anderson isn't part of the lineup, which would be somewhat disappointing.

So it's kinda up in the air right now.

  2. My wife had been wanting me to see this, so I DVR'd it a couple days ago, and we watched it together this afternoon.

As a father with a daughter it was very difficult to watch.

But it was an extraordinary movie and very intense; not with violence or gore, just intense with feeling.

    I would recommend it highly.

  3. I took my kids to see Rango Saturday.

    It is fantastic.

Been awhile since I enjoyed a movie this much.

It really is as good (or even better) than the trailers make it look.

On a side note, as animated movies get more and more sophisticated, they become less and less suitable for young kids.

There were a number of people who had very young kids (under 8) who obviously figured "animated movie = kids movie".

The storyline was too complex for kids coming to see something along the lines of Spongebob Squarepants.

And it was apparent - the kids had no interest in the movie at all and were disruptive.

And it's not that the movie is adult-oriented or inappropriate, it just has a much more detailed plot than Veggie Tales.

  4. As is often the case, I completely miss seeing a movie that becomes so popular that most people take it for granted.

    This was one of them.

So I got to watch it on Encore (one of my favorite premium channels for that very reason) this afternoon.

Most excellent, and the accolades were well-deserved.

Will definitely watch it again, when it's on again.

I watched this last night, it was OK.

Zöe Saldana is ridiculously hot, which made up for a lot.

  5. Don't know if anyone remembers Tony Carey from the 80s, but I just read that he's supposed to play in Colorado in June - his first time in the states since 1984.

He was the keyboardist for Rainbow in the 70s, and went on to do Planet P Project (Why Me?) and then solo.

He had some great tunes, including I Won't Be Home Tonight and A Fine, Fine Day.

If it's true, I may try to make it.

This might stir some old memories...

What a fun filled laugh-fest this was. Though it's obviously a very dire movie with very few moments of uplift it was worth watching because it really makes you think about how you would survive (or if you'd even want to) in a post-apocalyptic world.

This was a really creepy movie, but overall, pretty good.

I like how it obeys the premise even if that means less "action".

A very sobering and probably fairly accurate view of the aftermath of a cataclysmic event.

    Disturbing.

Though very gruesome and violent, I enjoyed this movie very much but I was very disappointed by how the ending leaves the viewer hanging. I immediately watched the bonus features searching for clues and finally came to understand why it needed to end that way. Unlike Donnie Darko (which also had a puzzling ending) I would like to see this one again to try to piece things together a little more thoroughly.

    Awesome movie.

    Incredibly intense.

It took me a time or 2 seeing it before I realized there is no soundtrack music.

I think this is what makes it so intense.

Last night I ordered Dinner For Schmucks on OnDemand.

It was pretty funny, but not as funny as I anticipated from the previews.

The first 80% of the movie was almost uncomfortable with all the disasters, but the last 20 or 30 minutes redeemed it somewhat when Steve Carell and Zach Galafianakis got going.

Probably watch it again since it's a 2-day rental.

Despite all the favorable reviews I'd read beforehand, my opinion would be nearly the exact opposite. Pretty fucking terrible from start to finish.

It had it's funny parts, but the Tom Cruise character Les Grossman was absolutely awesome.

Pretty much every scene with him was hilarious.

    At least to me.

  9. I really love Yes, and for me, this is not only one of their greatest songs, but one of my favorite songs by anyone.

This was a pretty wild period in my life, and this was practically the soundtrack for it (along with Presence).

Last year on the way to see a show in Atlanta (TCV, I believe), we cranked this song in the car (my favorite way to jam a good tune) while sporting a nice buzz, and it still has such a raw energy, an almost tribal sound, totally wanton.

And yet I also enjoy the later version of Yes as well.

A couple more of my favorites - the 2 albums I really like from their 80s era...

I think this one is so awesome the way it goes from a light acoustical beginning into a kinda heavy crescendo. Masterpiece.

I'm not a James Bond fanatic by any stretch of the imagination but this had all the touchstones of a great Bond flick. Looking forwarding to checking out Quantum of Solace next.

    Same here.

Back in the day (as a kid) I got kinda excited about Bond movies, but not recently.

However, Quantum of Solace was pretty good.

They've kinda gotten away from the cheesy over-the-top Bond persona, to a fairly more realistic character.

  11. I've got a ton of vacation time I'm taking ("use or lose"), so I've been off since the 17th until the 4th of January.

So my 16 year-old son and I are catching a lot of "classic" and "must-see" movies together.

Because he's never seen any of them in complete, we watched the first 2 Matrix movies last night, but since it was around 2:30 a.m., I insisted we watch Revolutions today - he was cool with that.

Last week we watched Full Metal Jacket - he was impressed, definite thumbs-up.

And I had the whole family watch It's a Wonderful Life with me a couple nights ago - it went over well.

Because we've watched The Fifth Element and The Book of Eli, I'm thinking of rounding out a collection of Gary Oldman villain movies with True Romance and The Professional.

  12. Yeah, we were just going by all the hype we'd heard. The movie GAVE me a hangover.

I'm kinda curious as to what you were expecting.

And I don't mean that as a criticism of your view, just curious.

    I mean, it's a comedy.

All I really remember about the hype was that it was outrageously funny, and I pretty much agreed after seeing it.

For me it worked better than a lot of comedies because the humor is incidental, as opposed to comedies with set pieces.

But again, that's just my opinion.

I read a lot of comments on IMDB about it in a thread about how bad the movie was.

My initial reaction was to be amazed that people didn't think it was a good movie or that it was funny.

Sometimes it's easy to forget the simple fact that people just have different tastes.

But then, my philosophy on humor could probably best be described as "no brow too low!" lulz

  13. Currently watching 'Lonesome Dove' again.

    B)

I always get choked up watching Lonesome Dove.

    Awesome movie.

The part where Gus wrote a letter for Lorena, but she couldn't read - she didn't want Clara to read it to her, she just wanted to have the letter, even not knowing what it actually said.
