  1. I have a 1973 Starship Question:

When in 1973 did Zeppelin begin using the Starship?

In the Bonus footage found in TSRTS, the local news coverage of the 1973 Tampa event shows Zeppelin arriving in a small private jet, and not the Starship.

Hi Rover, I don't have any hard data or references to give you but I'm fairly certain I remember Zep started to use the Starship for the first time in Chicago.

  2. I'll tell you why I don't think this is LA in May of 1973, but do think it's New York in July 1973: John Paul Jones is missing his mustache from the early part of the 1973 US Tour. All you need to look at are the pictures from Kezar Stadium in San Francisco from June 2, 1973, and compare them to these shots. I don't think JPJ grew that mustache in 2-3 days. Also, check out other photos of Jonesy from Tampa (May 5) or New Orleans (May 14)...he has the mustache.

As we know from the movie, he didn't have facial hair for the closing three nights in MSG that July. These photos have to be taken in New York.

Maybe it was a fake moustache? HA HA !!!!!!

No, that's definitely a James Fortune photo from the HH and not the Drake. I have friends here and elsewhere who were at one or both places and they have confirmed that for me. What they have said is that we may be confusing the dates - these photos might not have been taken when the band was at the HH for the LA shows but either earlier or later in the tour, when they had enough of a break between shows and could have returned to LA for a press conference, recording, R&R, etc.

  3. It is indeed at the Continental Hyatt House from May 31, 1973. I don't know the specific event, whether it's a end of the leg party, after show party or a Gold Record Award event. Perhaps someone else can shed some light.

If that date is correct then according to Richard Cole there was an after-show party in Laurel Canyon to celebrate John Bonham's 25th Birthday...George Harrison hit Bonham with his own birthday cake...many people were thrown into pool. I've heard the residence was owned by a "radio station owner" but have yet to confirm that or the address. It was also reported this occured at the hotel. Whatever the truth, given they've got their feet up on the furniture I agree it was taken at the hotel - pre or post show - as opposed to the private residence.

That's definitely the CHH. That photo, along with several others, was taken at the HH by James Fortune. There was a press conference held in one of their suites at the hotel. I always thought it was taken before one of their '73 LA shows but I don't know the exact date - whether it was on the 31st or on another day. In one of the photos you can see the wrapped poster they gave to Peter Grant and in a second photo he is holding up the unwrapped poster reading the little photos and captions of different things the band did/broke during that tour.

Edited to add: Steve, that party to which you're referring was definitely held at a private home (I can try to find out the name/title of the person for you) and the guests were VIPs and celebs. I know there are people who insist it was held at the hotel but I think they're referring to another party that was held there.

  4. A little late here, although my friends (two of whom went to Strawberry Fields to leave flowers and say prayers) and I honored him yesterday. We were, are and, for the rest of our lives, always will be passionate Beatles fans. John Lennon had a tremendous and unique impact on our lives. Driving home last night, my husband and I talked about the days when John walked the streets of NYC, his adopted home, with impunity and those of us who were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him, left him alone to enjoy his freedom and a sense of "anonymity."

  5. Heyo MAD!!!!! Thanks honey! Saved me searching through thousands of wonderful Robert.

Oh, and I finally found where you turn back on PM's...so my box is open again, I only closed it because i didn't want people to think I was being rude if I didn't answer.

Again, thank you, and lovely to "see" you again. ;)

Hey Hotplant! You're welcome. :) Glad you're back and your box is open. If you need more pics just PM me.

Lovely to "see" you here too sister. ;)

  6. I've been gone for ages, but if you can help me I'd appreaciate it.

Looking for hte pic of him playing that small washboard in Austin, I saw it here a long time ago....but where oh where can he be?:(

Want to send it along to our old BigBlues, as he was our original washboard player :P

    Hiya Hotplant, :)

If this one (not my photo) isn't the one you want, I have several others I can send you:

    RPwashboardAustin.jpg

When Robert turned around to grab the washboard behind him the pick with the string attached to the washboard dropped out of his hand and he did a kind of quick move with his body and his hand to catch the pick in the air...all so familiar to me, in that instant he could have been the Robert of 30 years ago. ;)

  7. Hi MSG...tks for posting these photos...never seen these before, ...

These are Post-Zep photos during the ARMS Concert (late 1983) as mentioned by Chicago...This is not '77 Page as I seen his photos back then from '77 on....

these excerpts are from Hammer of the Gods

....."when the ARMS tour arrived in Los Angeles a few days later, Jimmy checked into the Sunset Marquis as "James MacGregor."...

....."when Jimmy got into town, he called Richard Cole who was living quietly in Hollywood"....

.... "Jimmy also had a reunion with Lori Maddox...They met at The Rainbow"....

I could be wrong but I think these photos are taken in L.A., Rainbow Bar & Grill....during L.A. ARMS Performance...

....Nice to discuss Jimmy's Scarf as always :)

P.S. I loved your Robert Plant Review with all the fans from the Forum...I hope to see Robert too, I hope he will extend his tour ...lucky you!!!

    ...add

This topic has been discussed in SAJ - Mystery Thread, long ago...I remember

You really know your Jimmy looks, PlanetPage! I was at a few LZ and ARMS concerts and I have to admit that I struggle to identify some of the hair styles and outfits from the different years.

Thank you...I hope you can catch him on the next leg of his N.A. tour. :)

Thanks for this too. I can tell now they are both post Zep and very much like the during the Arms tour. I love discussing Jimmy's scarves too. :D

    You're welcome, aen27.

Ladies, I am sorry to say but I was told to "cool it" as far as talking about the scarves (and the dog collars)...it seems I was fanning the flames too hard for some people's taste... ;)

  8. That's definitely a post-Zeppelin photo. It must have been around the 1983 ARMS tour. Page's appearance, wardrobe and dental situation indicate that era.

..I thought so too...I think Richard looks bit aged for to be '77?

I think you're both right...to be honest I know very little about the later and post LZ years. This is not my photobucket so I don't know how long these pics will be up...but the scarf Jimmy is wearing here looks similar to the one he had on at the ARMS concerts:

  9. Hadn't seen that one before, thanks MSG. :) I hardly dare ask what Jimmy's doing.

You're welcome, Aquamarine. :) There are several other pics from that night floating around. I used to think they were taken in the back room of Max's in 1977 (because of the chicken wings and Jimmy's appearance) but someone told me the pics were taken in L.A. I think Jimmy is attempting to eat.

  10. Hmm, definitely not JPJ--at first quick glance I thought it was Bonzo (misled by the moustache), but not him either . . . Your guess may be correct, MSG.

Aquamarine, someone just told me that it is Sam Cutler, the former tour manager for the Stones.

  11. Hmm, definitely not JPJ--at first quick glance I thought it was Bonzo (misled by the moustache), but not him either . . . Your guess may be correct, MSG.

Odd that the caption identified him as JPJ when it clearly isn't him. One of my friends initially thought it was Bonzo too but this man's build is smaller.

  12. This photo was originally labeled as JPJ with JP. I'm bad with faces but this doesn't look at all like JPJ to me. Could this be an early pic of John Ward with Jimmy? Was he with the band then? In Montreal?

(Edited to move to a different photobucket account)

  13. Hi George, I am fairly certain that Jimmy Page purchased the Tower House in either 1971 or 1972. I remember that when I first saw him, he already owned the house or was in the process of purchasing it. The fact that he owned such a magnificent home was astounding to me at the time and the memory has stayed with me. I haven't looked at it in along time but my original pressing of LZIII is not a gatefold; it has a revolving wheel on the side. Is the image of the castle on the wheel?~MSG

Edited to add: I didn't see Steve's post when I responded; I might be confusing the Boleskine House with the Tower House.

  14. Hi, Screamer. I show it was some mixing of the 'Houses of the Holy' album material (recorded in May at Olympic Studios in London) and some recording for the song 'Houses of the Holy'. They also rehearsed 'No Quarter' there

as an instrumental earlier that month.

Hi Mr. Jones. Thanks for your quick and very interesting response. LZ's activities in the studio (Electric Ladyland?) were much more significant than my friends and I ever could have imagined.

  15. Welcome to the forum, but loyal fans never kiss and tell. :D

    No, they don't... ;)

Question: When LZ were in the NYC area for their '72 concerts at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, between concerts, they went back into NYC and at one point were at a recording studio...I think, the Electric Ladyland Studios. As far as music, what, if anything, did they do there? I used to think it had something to do with "The Drone", either recording it there or editing a recording they made of it (either at the Coliseum or a studio in England?).

glicine- I am picturing this vertical and having thoughts of well.....let's just say imagination is a blessing :yesnod:

    don't you mean horizontal? :slapface::)

Girls, please. ;) Vertical or horizontal...when it came to the Zep guys...it didn't matter... :shifty:
