Spins and Needles by Ann Stark

Deep Purple's Ian Gillian talks about his role in Jesus Christ —

Superstar, in which he sings the title part. "The album took off like

a rocket in America and they have forecast it to gross four million

before it dies. Lennon was going to do it originally, but the producers

thought that it would get out of hand if he got involved. They also

planned on getting Robert Plante (sic), but that thing fell through too."

I didn't know this, they may have been right about John Lennon, after the press miss quoted him for saying that "he thought they (The Beatles) where bigger than god"!

The roles of Jesus and Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar were written with John Lennon and Yoko Ono in mind. Webber and Rice initially offered them the roles (Dec 3, 1969), then withdrew the offer, deciding to go with lesser-known performers.

Was Robert really considered for or offered the role?

Ian Gillian seems to have thought so, but it's the first I've ever heard of it. I can see where Robert may have been on a short list of potential vocalists for the album, but I doubt it went much further than that.

Phew - good job that didn't happen! Yoko Ono singing "I Don't Know How To Love Him" is a thought more terrible than I care to imagine! And after hearing Gillan sing it, I can't think how Lennon could even compared - his range & style were so different. Nope - things worked out for the best there, all right.

I'm not sure Lennon would have been the best vocalist but can't you imagine

him playing the part ! Don't think it would have been tolerated though. Them were strange day's

They couldn't have found a better vocalist to do it than Ian Gillan. It's not just that after the event it's hard to imagine it differently, but that his voice just fits a part like that one - really strong and slightly pompous, with an element of Tom Jones in there somewhere. Great!
