DAS
Did the Chili Peppers and Black Keys receive billing above Black Sabbath?
Jahfin
Did the Chili Peppers and Black Keys receive billing above Black Sabbath? Yes. Not sure how the billing works other than the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Black Keys, Black Sabbath and Jack White are considered headliners. I definitely wouldn't take it as some sort of insult to Black Sabbath.
Strider
But will they have a holographic Tupac?
Jahfin
But will they have a holographic Tupac? I understand Wilco are hard at work perfecting the Jay Bennett hologram for those fans that haven't liked anything they've done since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I definitely wouldn't take it as some sort of insult to Black Sabbath. Nothing against the other three acts but none of them have earned what Black Sabbath have earned. Not by a longshot. I'm not really a huge Sabbath fan, I do like them though, so I'm not insulted as a fan. Personally I hate the Beatles but if Paul McCartney wasn't the headliner at a festival like this I would be confused as well. Though I don't like his music there are very few acts who have earned what he has. He should be the final act at almost anything.
Walter
RHCP have earned everything Sabbath has....like it or not.
DAS
What? No way! The Chili Peppers are very popular but Black Sabbath revolutionized hard rock/metal as we know it. Hendrix was the original hard rocker imo and Zeppelin the best but subsequent generations have followed the Sabbath mold more closely than anything else. In terms of popularity or record sales or touring or what have you they may be about the same (though I haven't checked the stats so i don't know) but to be a revolutionary like Sabbath they are not imo. Jahfin
I really don't know for sure but I'm guessing Red Hot Chili Peppers have top billing because they're more closely associated with Lollapalooza than Sabbath, especially since they were one of the first bands to take part in the festival. By them receiving top billing I don't think Perry Farrell (or whoever curated the lineup) is trying to say that any one band or artist is better than the other. The Chili Peppers simply have a history with Lollapalooza that Black Sabbath doesn't.
2bitnogoodjive
Yeah, my first Lollapalooza concert was 20 years ago. Got to see RHCP, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Jesus & Mary Chain, Ministry, Ice Cube.
Jahfin
Yeah, my first Lollapalooza concert was 20 years ago. Got to see RHCP, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Jesus & Mary Chain, Ministry, Ice Cube. I didn't attend but I remember when it came to Walnut Creek in Raleigh. This was around the time that Ice T was catching a lot of shit for his song with Body Count called "Cop Killer" and wasn't allowed to play it (or was at least discouraged from doing so) so Soundgarden was performing it instead. From what I was told, when Soundgarden launched into it a group of police officers formed a human barricade in front of the stage.

Don't forget Lush. That was a rocking line-up. Too bad you missed the first year, though. I didn't attend but I remember when it came to Walnut Creek in Raleigh. Don't know where you got your info, but unless Ice-T played the side stage, you're confusing Ice Cube and Ice-T. Ice-T and Bodycount were part of the first Lollapalooza in 1991. They played between the Butfhole Surfers and Nine Inch Nails. I saw 5 Lollapalooza shows that year and they played "Cop Killer" every time. Ice-T and guitarist Ernie C. also joined Jane's Addiction twice for their version of Sly Stone's "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey".

According to this information posted at Wiki, Body Count indeed played the side stage in 1992: Location: North America Dates: July 18, 1992 – September 13, 1992 Main Stage: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush Side Stage: Jim Rose Circus, Sharkbait, Archie Bell, Porno for Pyros, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Sweaty Nipples, Arson Garden, Seaweed, Seam, Green Magnet School, Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., The Look People, Stone Temple Pilots, The Vulgar Boatmen, Truly, Skrew, Tribe, The Authority, Samba Hell, Café Tacuba, Rage Against the Machine, Ice T & Body Count, Luscious Jackson, Shrunken Head, Sometime Sweet Susan. This is also from Lollapalooza '92 though I'm not sure where it was filmed: Edited August 2, 2012 by Jahfin
